I’m pretty scared of heights as well, though seemingly not as bad as you two, and I can’t wait to see it.

I really think it’s the greatest physical feat in human history. To be able to suppress fear and have perfect execution where a single mistake means certain death is beyond anything I can comprehend.

I like what the guy in the trailer said, “if you know a little bit about climbing, you think ‘oh, he’s totally safe’ but people who know a lot about climbing and know exactly what he’s doing are just freaked out”

This isn’t like a two-hour marathon or winning six Super Bowls or even being the first to climb Everest. This is complete and total mastery and control over the most complex machine ever put on this earth: the human body and mind.

I saw him speak at a private speaking engagement last year and have been dying to see this. Glad to hear it’s good

That guy is Tommy Caldwell, a pro climber that's put up some of the hardest free climbs on El Cap (not free solo, free climbing and free soloing are different things but media often confuses the terms). Tommy was recently the subject of another climbing documentary, The Dawn Wall. Tommy also said to "Imagine an Olympic-gold-medal-level athletic achievement that if you don't get that gold medal, you're going to die" to describe free soloing El Cap, which I think is a pretty good way to describe it.

Anyway, Free Solo was great. I saw it in theaters twice. Once when it first ran, and then again when it came to the pizza and beer theater in town. I would have seen it a third time if they had shown it in IMAX in Maine.

I agree on the feat itself. That's just friggin' crazy to be able to even ATTEMPT that, much less accomplish it.

Another climber describes the feat as: imagine going for a gold medal in the Olympics where if you silver you die. (Edit: I see that struck Bass, too. Very powerful way to put it in context, since we have all seen gold medal favorites, even prohibitive favorites, screw up.)

Spoilers:

He doesn't have to suppress fear -- his amygdala doesn't trigger with normal stimulae -- he has the fear equivalent of aphasia. This cannot be healthy.

His parents were a piece of work.

I can see the appeal of a Pure Pursuit, particularly in a world where we are abstracted away from real consequences.

The segment on the Boulder Problem was brilliant filmmaking and storytelling. Here you have this really abstruse and deep issue that is well down into climber language and technique, yet appreciating it is a key to the appreciation of the climb -- how do you present it so it resonates? He hit it exactly right -- he didn't ESPN-dumb-it-down, and he didn't hipster snob if-you're-not-following-it's-not-my-problem. And the filming itself was delightful and terrifying. An example of the documentary art.

Just generally there was no lard and no puffery -- after literally decades of 30-for-30 (which is even good) and Olympic coverage and the race to the lowest common denominator of pathos and superficial monetization of sports drama and talent, it was amazing to see it done well. We should institute a new rule for sports documentarians. If you don't do it perfectly, you die.

The GF is predatory. She is obviously a mortal threat by distracting him but she's all wrapped up in auditioning for The Suffering Survivor. I know it's a rush, girl, and I know it helps your life coaching career to attach yourself to this famous guy, and obviously he doesn't ask anything of you so it's easy, but to me you got your dream of looking pretty on the red carpet when the filmmaker won, so now go find some VC shlub who can buy you things, kthxbai.

Bass (I’m pretty sure it was him) and I have recommended a few movies in the past about this topic. I’ll post my favorites again.

Valley Uprising - my favorite documentary of all time I think. Story of the birth of Yosemite as the climbing Mecca. Lots of fun.
Meru - same filmmaker I think as Free Solo. It’s about a climb up a legendary route on Meru.
To the Limit (Am Limit) - German movie about Yosemite and two climbers trying to break the speed climb record of El Cap

yeah, Meru was also Jimmy Chin / Chai Vasarhelyi film. I think that's how Jimmy met Chai (they're now married).


Queen Maud Land is a short climbing film sponsored by The North Face (who sponsor Alex Honnold as well as Conrad Anker, the leader of the Meru expedition, and Jimmy Chin). During the expedition Alex and Ceadar Write put up a bunch of new routes in Antartica (roped) -- and Alex actually says he's scared at one point and has to compose himself before continuing. Jimmy and Conrad spend the entire expedition doing one huge multi-day first ascent. It doesn't have a compelling story like Free Solo, but its interesting to see Alex in a different context (A Line Across the Sky is another climbing film with Alex and Tommy Caldwell that isn't focused on free soloing).

Halloween (2018)

Really well done sequel. The nods to the original were awesome. The creepiness factor keeps it up in this one, too, which is what made the original so great. No real theatrics, it's methodical. Definitely recommend if you're a fan of the first one.

I'm going to trust you on this although every fiber of my being screams YDFC BS (c.f., remake of The Fog). If you have misled me, well, I'm staring at the wall, looking through the wall, towards this night...

Is this the one with the Clockwork Orange dude as Donald Pleasance?

Edit: I misread. This is part of the original timeline, not the remake. I'd heard the remake was good but then saw pieces of it that sucked lemur pus.

Nein, Deutschland. On the "fifth freedom" route that stops in FRA. So, probably only time for one movie during the service, and then (hopefully) a few hours' sleep.
