Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Star Wars is a fine movie franchise if you just take it for a simple action movie series. If you try to parse it apart, to intellectualize the Star Wars universe, that's where people seem to find their hatred of it.

Fixed.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Very true. It was supposed to be an homage to the old serials that used to run. It wasn't supposed to be Harry Potter, or Tolkien.

There are a few genres included in Star Wars' scripts: the old serials, Samurai movies, and some old mythology writings (I forget which). And it was never supposed to be about deep introspection, so people taking Star Wars to that level are just looking for something, and sometimes finding things, that they want to find.

Overall, Star Wars was a kids' movie, turned into a merchandise machine, but still a kids' movie. While I hate C3P0 and Jar Jar, they were meant for kids, so I get it. Still don't like it, but I get it.

To be fair to Lucas, which is difficult since he became a self-caricature of Comic Book Guy as played by Orson Welles, there was some depth to it.

George Lucas’ Star Wars is steeped in myth. While writing Star Wars, Lucas became fascinated with Joseph Campbell’s book on myth and heroic archetypes The Hero with a Thousand Faces. While not necessarily the basis of his story, he was certainly influenced by his obsession with the monomyth. You can see elements of this theory throughout the saga, but especially in Luke’s journey from boyhood to Jedi-hood.

The Bill Murray Stories: The Life Learned From A Mythical Man.

Bill's stories are a viral thing. He just shows up, and does whatever. He has no people for movies, he just takes requests (literally) and then decides. Really good documentary. He really does live in the moment. Part of it is for his entertainment (all the world is a stage, of course ;) ) but I also like to believe he just wants people to be happy, and this is his way of showing it.

He supposedly pops up at random bars in the greater Charleston, SC area, particularly during the winter months. You can also spot him at Charleston Riverdogs baseball games, or at one of the two restaurants he is part-owner of.

Part owner of the Charleston team, and that's where the story starts, in Charleston.

There is a TON of video footage, obviously gleamed off the internet, but that is not a slight on the doc.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

He's also part owner of the St Paul Saints. He has randomly appeared as a hot dog vendor a few times.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Yes. It was hilariously clear who the best player on the field was.

Same with when JD Drew did his Pout Out by playing with the Saints for a season (or two?). I attended one game and he got on base each time, including a couple big homers.

Atomic Blonde:

Standard spy movie with all the twists and turns and over the top action. It was entertaining enough, I suppose, but nothing blew me away.

Re: Bohemian Rap City: Movies Thread

Finally saw Creed.

Way better than it had any right to be. The lead was great and even Stallone acted very well as a borderline sundowner. The love interest was utterly worthless but I guess she had to be there for TEH KIDS and the chicks.

A-.

Abducted In Plain Sight:

What in the actual EFF?
The parents are morons and frankly, just as guilty as the assailant. The only sympathy I have is for all the daughters. This doc is so messed up....cringeworthy from minute one.

Body Heat

Great film noir from 1981. Has a 70's vibe to it. Kathleen Turner at her best.
