Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

*punches hole in the wall*

At this point, it doesn't even matter whether it actually would happen or not. The concept alone makes me angry. Hulk angry.

I don't know how you CCHA folks have been able to put up with it.

You know it's a bad idea when a Gopher fan and a Bucky fan agree.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

I wouldn't think that St. Cloud or UMD will be involved, but I have no info on that. There's a chance that the proposed league has already had a meeting.

Supposedly the proposed league would have a scheduling agreement with Hockey East. That frees up the Minnesota & Michigan schools to play the BTHC.

How would Miami pay for all this travel? One would assume the playoff revenues would be significantly higher than the CCHA. Miami has more endowed hockey scholies than most other schools. They have a brand new arena. They gave Enrico a fat raise. They have the money if they need to make hockey more high profile.

Chambers thinks the six schools would be UNO, DU, CC, Miami, ND & UND.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/sports/2011/03/08/big-10-hockey-conference-ok-by-me/16229/

Why would people automatically assume that Denver and CC would be in on that conference? UMD and SCSU have larger enrollments, comparable arena capacity and are much closer in proximity to UNO, UND, ND and Miami:

School enrollment:

UMD: 11,800
SCSU: 15,000
Denver: 9,500
CC: 1,950

Arena capacity:

UMD: 6,600
SCSU: 5,371
Denver: 6,026
CC: 7,343

I think there's some overcompensatory lobbying/wishful thinking going on in the Rockies because the Colorado schools see the writing on the wall. Everyone knows how poorly the DU and CC fan bases travel; I had multiple people allude to finding "the" CC fan at the F5. With school funding dwindling and travel costs continuing to skyrocket, I'd be shocked if Miami and ND join up with NoDak, UNO and the Colorado schools--especially considering the lack of financial upside involved.

He isn't right very often, but he is dead on about how bad an idea shootouts are. I bet both PSU and OSU will be calling for them, and what will Barry say?

The driver is recruiting not revenue. Supposedly the Minnesota schools don't have or want to spend the money to travel.

Since there wouldn't be a neutral site tourney traveling fans aren't an issue.

Whats in it for Notre Dame & UND? Conference home games against BU, BC, Maine & UNH and a 28 game schedule.

It's never been about recruiting. It's all about money. Always has been. Just like the BTHC is all about money. The WCHA moving the F5 to Xcel? About the money.

That goes double when said goofer fan is a fool like Happy.

Barry is going for the lowest common denominator, because he wants the average joe football fan to start showing up at hockey games. It's part of what explains why he was so gung ho about the BTHC in the first place. If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Barry throwing his support behind ****ing shootouts.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Darth Alverez is going to want the shootouts. You all know this to be True.

Absolutely no question about it.

But does Barry really have that much pull in hockey matters? I don't think he will beyond the push towards the conference formation.

I gotta think that the hockey matters will be decided by people who actually know something about it.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

So what other teams could possible join the Big 10 hockey conference
Teams with no hockey
Purdue
Illinois
Indiana
Northwestern
Iowa
Nebraska Lincoln

Purdue
Almost no chance. They have not add a sport since 1934 and officials have said they have no plans

Indiana
Funding is an issue. So maybe if someone donates than it will not happen.

Illinois
nothing been said but have good club hockey team which sells out for home games. So a tiny chance. Illinois is growing in hockey. A friend of mine told me there are youth hockey team are growing. His town just got a youth hockey team. So if they do join maybe 10 years form now.

Northwestern
nothing been said. But maybe Illinois is growing in hockey. A friend of mine told me there are youth hockey team are growing. His town just got a youth hockey team. So if they do join maybe 10 years form now.

Iowa
Have 5 USHL teams but money is an issue like all schools here. Nothing has been said by the AD.

Nebraska Linclon
Nothing been said by AD I doubt it will happen but there only chance is Men's Basketball team is leaving there Basketball arena for a big in the fall of 2013. The arena is a multiple complex there is a swimming, wrestling, and volleyball. Since the building will still be in use the basketball part could be turned into arena. But I do not know how much it would cost.

I can't see any teams joining so I have a feeling it will stay a 6 team conference for a long time.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Get rid of title IX, and you would have a chance on a couple. otherwise, I don't see it happening without some big cash gift to a school.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

As weird as it sounds to say it, I think that Indiana is probably the best bet.

IF they can get a rink in their new basketball arena, then that clears what I think is the biggest hurdle for these schools: getting an appropriately sized on-campus facility.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Wasn't there a rumor about a year ago that Indiana was going to have a donor for a hockey team? I want to say it was Marc Cuban.

He's the one with money to burn. Heck, he's got enough money that he could probably have Indiana build something that would put the Ralph to shame.

Nebraska's AD basically said, "No f*king way" already.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Yeah, I tried barking up that tree. He knows better than all of us hockey peons. He's the big bad football blogger (who pushed all his chips on the roulette table on "orange").

Jup is wrong, Frank is right. Since the Big Ten doesn't currently have a conference, how can they own the "rights" to games that aren't under their control? Part of the Big Ten's frustration with the WCHA and CCHA has been their inability to negotiate more games for the B10 Network. Well, its less about negotiation and more about "take", the B10 wanted the content for almost nothing since they view MN, WI, MI, MSU and OSU as "their schools". (they are but the hockey games aren't/weren't) The WCHA was more than willing to let them pay for the games they wanted, they just weren't going to let them pay LESS than FSN was already paying. The College Hockey Showcase was usually on (at least a 2 games) the B10 because the WCHA and CCHA didn't own the rights being it was non-conference.
