Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Exactly. The Final Five SHOULD be able to draw 13-15k/game (~65-70k overall) without Minnesota and Wisconsin. If they restructure the ticket pricing perhaps that number increases. If, for whatever reasons, they are consistently drawing 12k or less (~60k overall), then they should move the tournament to the Ralph. I just don't see that happening.

Yes but the question is will the X be happy with those ticket sales? Personally unless it is 15K or more I don't see it. And how many of those are going to be packages? I just don't buy that schools not named UND are going to be buying up packages in droves if they are not sure their team will make it. If they were going to do that, why didn't they do it before?

And all of you are fooling yourself if you think the X won't make a play for the Big Ten Tourny if/when they leave the campuses. Top of the line corporate sponsors, guaranteed ticket sales, higher prices and brand name schools. Plus local interest which helps too.

Has FSN said they will broadcast the Final Five once Minnesota and Wisconsin are gone? The WCHA should be pushing hard for this if they want the status quo to stay. If they can keep the games on tv that will help their cause immensely as they will keep their sponsors and the X still gets the exposure and some advertising dollars. If FSN abandons them and someone else (that isnt local access...maybe Channel 45 or something) doesnt pick them up though while the Big Ten Tourny will most likely be on the Big Ten Network (or, at least can claim they will be who knows what will actually happen) that will weigh in on the decision as well.

Look, I dont care either way and I am not being vindictive or trying to act smug because I have no need to be. I am just saying what the argument is going to be for the X to ditch the Final Five in a few years if the Big Ten comes a calling. (and they may not...it is all based on hypothesis)

Fair enough. It really is a complex situation that will take awhile to sort out and you raise some very good points (ie. Will the X want the WCHA and the TV situation). The X, IMO, will want to go with whatever situation nets them the most $$$. I wouldn't think that the B1G would want a conference tournament where only two schools are within driving distance. The Joe would probably be a better fit geographically (5 schools within ~7 hours), and Detroit is Hockeytown (:p:D:D). Also, I think B1G Hockey sells better in Michigan/Ohio than it does in Minnesota in comparison to CCHA vs WCHA. What I mean by that is that hockey fans in Minnesota will watch whether Minnesota is in the WCHA or the B1G, while Michigan/Ohio/PA fans I feel are more apt to follow their teams in the B1G than the CCHA. Given that, I feel that the B1G at the Joe would be far more successful than the CCHA Tournament was, and has the potential of surpassing the WCHA Tourney, wherever it may be held.

As for the TV situation, I would think that FSN would be inclined to cover the Final Five. They are not going to be able to cover the B1G Tournament, so it comes down to would they be better off showing fishing highlights or college hockey. Even without Minnesota and Wisconsin, there are still 4 Minnesota schools, North Dakota, and then the larger markets in Omaha and Denver, and the Springs isn't too bad. My guess would be that FSN would keep covering the event.

Again, it is a complex situation filled with a ton of intricacies, that could really go any way. I don't really care too much either way because if the Final Five isn't at the X it will be at the Ralph, which would give North Dakota a huge advantage (not that we've struggled too much at the X over the past few years). My best guess would be the Final Five stays at the X, the B1G stays on campus or goes to the Joe, which leaves the CCHA in a bit of a bind, but probably going to Grand Rapids.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I read a NY Times article a little while back and it was talking about how arenas in some major cities where having issues getting events scheduled due to the competition between arenas. Minneapolis was specifically mentioned in the arena since it has a separate arena for NHL, NBA, UMinn Bball, Uminn Hockey, and the Metrodome. So it seems like the X would want to keep the WCHA tourney and any other tourney there since they are competing with so many other venues for events already.

I will ask and see what they might be thinking.
The WCHA should be pushing hard for this if they want the status quo to stay.
Which is why I don't believe we will see a major conference shift after Minnesota and Wisconsin leave for the Big Ten.

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Maybe it's time for you to get a new shtick.

Or at least learn the difference between "accept" and "except".

Ok.

Would you like pink blush whine with your smelly cheese?

Re: Big Ten Hockey Conference Pt III - Revenge of the Sith.

Ok, so who had money that somebody could end up looking worse than Dark Sidious of the Cheeseheads after the BTHC announcement was finalized??

You're thread title is one of my favorites, and you're welcome for UND being the scapegoat in this whirlwind of conference changes :D.

scapegoat? hardly...its difficult to be a scapegoat when you actually are responsible destroying the greatest College Hockey Conference that ever existed.

Good point. I figured the BTHC would be hated on by all (except 4four4) :) for many years to come, now it seems the hate has transferred to the little 6 conference.

I was thinking the same thing. It is really refreshing.

Oh, I think there is enough hate to go around.

I wish I had a dollar for each time 4four4 was wrong. :)

But truth be told, that's why I love him. He's almost always wrong but continues his sthtick day after day oblivious to the changing landscape.

Without a doubt... Especially towards North Dakota. :D

I am not exactly a fan of all this change but I have come to accept it and move on.
