Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

When we go to on campus playoffs I wonder what Ohio State will do?
For years they've contracted with the Ohio High School Athletic Association to host state wrestling and basketball championships here and kick the hockey team off their own ice because sadly Ohio State is all about the money and not the athletes.
Now the CCHA had no clout with the university and was helpless to change it but the B1G may see things differently and they could make OSU accommodate the hockey team and have them play on their own ice in the Schott. The conference should have no tolerance for OSU to try and put them back in the old 800 seat original arena for playoffs.

I completely agree with this, but I am not sure how much clout an athletic conference has regarding telling a university how to use their facilities. I do agree with you, though. I've become fed up over the years with the university kicking our men's hockey team out of their own building. It's just another way the athletic department shows that they don't give two craps about our hockey program.

Isn't there a plan (or at least talks) for an actual hockey arena? The furniture center is too big and Ice Rink, while intimate and charmingly bizarre in appearance, is too small.

OSU was an affiliate of the CCHA but as a full fledge member of the B1G, OSU like all member schools must fully answer to big brother B1G! Any rule the conference chooses to adopt compliance is mandatory.

You're kidding right? They took the one conference with a super successful following for their playoff and destroyed it for a TV Network. They certainly didn't do it because they could put butts in the seats.

And in addition to the destruction they became the most irrelevant hockey conference in the NCAA.

If nothing else happened after the B1G formed (except for the CCHA absorbing UAH), college hockey would be in a better place than they are now. The NCHC miscalculated the effect the B1G would have on the hockey landscape.

I'm afraid if they do build a hockey only facility the morons in charge will make it way to small with no consideration we may actually build a successful program which will bring attendance up. We've shown we can easily bring in 10,000 or better on a very good night.
How large or small it should be has been a subject of endless debate on our threads with no consensus.

A very hard fought win against Denver. I hope we don't under estimate Air Force tomorrow.
Sweeping the tourney should propel us into the national rankings!

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Votes are being cast for pre-season rankings...3 weeks away from Penn St. vs. SLU marking the start of the season for the conference...and no conference thread?
For shame!

Will the conference put more than 1 team into post-season play this year? As usual, the first 2 months of the season will tell the tale as almost 90% of non-conference games come before the Christmas break. Given how young a number of the teams are this season that doesn't bode well, but we should see some improvement from the Gophers, Badgers and Buckeyes.

How will the conference standings shake out? Here's how I see it heading into the season:

1 - Minnesota
They lose Hudson Fasching but return the core of their regular season championship team as well as adding some talented youngsters.

2/3 - OSU and Michigan
OSU lose almost nothing from a team that wasn't far off from competing for a title last season.
Michigan lose a lot, but as always reload. How well the freshman integrate and acclimate to the college game will be key.

4/5 - PSU and Wisconsin
Penn St. lose a lot from last year (7 skaters, 6/11 top point-getters, both their goalies) . I expect this to be Gadowsky's most challenging season behind the PSU bench since their inauguration.
Wisconsin has their "dream team" coaching staff, some talented forwards in Grant Besse, Luke Kunin and freshman Trent Frederic. But they have been truly awful the past couple years and have significant questions in goal.

6 - Michigan St.
They sucked last year and it's hard to see them being any better this year. They lost 10 players from last year's team including leading scorer Mackenzie MacEachern and goaltender Jake Hildebrand. They have a roster with 8 freshman skaters and no proven netminder. Methinks this will be Anastos' last season...I mean....it has to be, right?

How about All-Conference honors?

F - Luke Kunin (UW)
F - Justin Kloos (MN)
F - Nick Schilkey (OSU)
D - Drew Brevig (OSU)
D - Jake Bischoff (MN)
G - Eric Schierhorn (MN)

ROY - Trent Frederic (UW)
COY - Don Lucia (MN)

Yes, the conference will absolutely put more than one team into postseason play this year. Minnesota is a given. They will be at least a top 10 team, if not top 5. Between Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State I see at least one and possibly two of them getting in as well. Michigan State is just too far down to bounce back any time soon. Hopefully they can start putting the pieces back together soon, as I am anxious for the day when all Big Ten teams win the majority of their non-conference games.

Conference Scorecard:

Exhibition
Minn: 0-0-0
Wisc: 1-0-0
Mich: 1-0-0
Mi St: 0-0-1
Oh St: 1-0-0
Pe St: 1-0-0
B1G: 4-0-1

Non-Con
Minn: 1-0-0
Wisc: 1-1-0
Mich: 1-1-0
Mi St: 0-0-0
Oh St: 1-0-1
Pe St: 1-1-0
B1G: 5-3-1 (3rd behind HE and NCHC)

Current estimate for B1G teams in the NCAAs: 2

So, was Ohio State's win over Denver on Friday the best statement win for the conference this weekend?

I'd have to say no other game comes close. Tough weekend at home for No. 3 Denver which also lost to BC.

That was definitely an important win for the Buckeyes and for the conference. But I don't really put a lot of stock in single-game performances, especially on the very first night of the season. You can point to single games, but I think it always needs to be in context. So hopefully OSU continues to get results in OOC play. If they do, and Denver starts looking like the team they have been hyped to be, this win will carry much more weight.

While a 6-3-1 record so far doesn't mean everything is ok, it's much better than the start the conference had the last 2 seasons iirc.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

With Ohio State, Michigan & Michigan State playing old CCHA rivals this weekend, the series to watch would in my opinion be Wisconsin hosting Boston College.
Despite BC's loss to Air Force in the Ice Breakers they beat #3 Denver and if the Badgers can sweep BC who is still ranked #6 & #9 in the USCHO & USA polls respectively, and do so during a rebuilding phase with their new coach, it would certainly give the conference more credibility.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

Theoretically, they will be better as they get more practice time to adjust to the new system, but the defense was full of holes last weekend. Going against a team of BC's caliber, my expectations are thoroughly sandbagged.

You may be right, but I was speaking hypothetically as to a best case scenario, not to what the reality could be.
Still I wish the Badgers luck this weekend.

Given UWs recent results against BC, losing by only 3 goals would, sadly, be an improvement.

Although BC is down a little from recent years, so the Badgers should have a shot to pull an upset...
