Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

TA isn't going anywhere. Hockey simply doesn't rank high enough on AD Brian Hollis' priority list to pay two head coaching salaries. Unless they win four games or something hilarious like that, TA isn't going anywhere.

I can believe your AD's priorities are that low when you look at your other sports.
You have a softball coach there about 25 years now and only one season above .500? Winning outside of football & basketball doesn't seem important but hey, welcome to my world!

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Might want to start whipping up a gnarly batch of moonshine while you're down there. Looking like ya'll might need it this season.

On the bright side, if things go really badly you should be rid of Anastos, right?
Right?
They can't possibly keep him around....

He was actually just extended this offseason. Or the last one, can't remember. I believe it's the second time he's been extended, which is two times too many.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Not that I like BC, but I think I would feel too dirty if I cheered for Bucky to sweep, despite how much it would help PWR.
Back in the day, some rooted for conference mates as a matter of loyalty. Some rooted against as a matter of rivalry. It was all good either way; just part of the fun.

But now with the PWR factor, it's literally irrational to root against conference mates. Cutting off your nose to spite your face.

OK, I wouldn't say you have to cheer lead. Maybe the answer is to hold your nose rather than cutting it off.;)

I've been around since 'back in the day' and while the conference mix-up has diminished a lot of the fun of rivalries, when one of your top two rivals for decades is still in your conference, you don't just switch gears and cheer for them easily (although I almost felt pity for them the last couple seasons they were so bad. Ok, it was either pity or gloating.). I have always hoped for wins from conference teams over non-conference teams when they weren't one of the major rivals. I doubt Buckeye hockey has ever had a rivalry at the level of MN -WI -UND, so you might not have experienced those feelings. I want my team to be good enough that they will make the tourney regardless of how the rest of their conference does. That is what I cheer for. (Not to say that, OSU, Penn State or MSU winning non-conference games doesn't put a smile on my face. And even if were to the point late in the season that a WI win helps the Gophers clear the bubble, I won't admit it on site that is so over-run with cheeseheads.)

That's just nonsense in the current state of the conference and in general when it comes to determining the field. I'll never cheer for UW ever but right now the B1G needs to grow the brand for the betterment of the conference and that means UM, UW and UMi winning NC games with the others hopefully holding their own. Besides it means far more to the Gophers (and to me personally as a fan) to beat Becky H2H and look down at them in the conference standings than if they win or lose to BC. In FB and BB eff them but vor hockey I agree with the concept of cutting off the nose to spite the face.

What are FB and BB? Are you implying there are other sports that matter?

Not my AD, not my school.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

I started going to games for all 3 sports as far back as 1972 and will remain a fan of all 3.

Well I am sorry to hear that. Have you considered counseling? I think the only bouncyball games I have ever been able to watch for an entire game (in my entire life) were ones my college roommate was playing in. I figured I was watching him, not the game.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

I certainly want enough Big Ten teams to win that the regular season winner will go to the NCAA without winning the tourney. Otherwise, the Big Ten is a joke.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

With the pride and success the Spartans have had in the past with their hockey program I don't understand why getting that ship upright again hasn't been a real priority?
