Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Taking nothing for granted I've seen Ohio state collapse before but I think this team is different. They have played Well on the road which is a switch from years past. The schedule is home friendly at the end with 6 of 10 so they have a chance to gain ground.

I think they are different too. Minnesota still has trips to Columbus, Happy Valley, and Ann Arbor on the schedule. Not to mention a pair of non-conference games this weekend that could hurt their PWR should they lose.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

With Penn State, Minnesota, and Ohio State all currently within the top 10 PWR it is starting to look more and more certain that we'll see three Big Ten teams among the field of 16. Maybe even four if Wisconsin can manage to win the Big Ten tournament, which is doubtful but you never know.

The Gophers face their own form of kryptonite this weekend - other Minnesota schools. Coming into this season the Gophers were something like 2-15-3 against other Minnesota schools, and they're 1-3-0 so far this season. This will be a tough weekend for the Gophers, no doubt.

And the only Minnesota team they can seem to beat, Mankato(who accounts for the 2 in that 2-15-3), isn't even in the tourney this year.:o:(

Another reason this tournament is gone.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

With four teams currently among the top 15 in PWR I think it is safe to say that the Big Ten is back. People can say what they want about last year, and the truth of the matter is last year was a pretty dismal one for the entire conference. But I think the time has now come to eat crow for those who constantly badmouth the conference. Not only is it not so bad after all, it is in fact actually quite good.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Every year has been dismal for the conference. This year it's clear we're 1 or 2 and a very good argument can be made for 1.

Don't pretend the other years were just ok, they were not. Wretched is a better term. And it's still a lukewarm replica of what the WCHA used to be.

I hope the Big Ten is this good every year, and with the addition of ND next year, I suspect it will be for at least one more year.

It would help to get a real D1 team at MSU and it's well past time for Berenson also...could be a tremendous conference if that happens

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

MSU had a flash in the pan team once every 4-7 years and has for decades. I don't see much changing there.

Even if Michigan recovered, I don't think it's reasonable for more than 80% of the conference to always be in the top of the sport. Teams will have swings.

The reason the WCHA was so dam good was because they had at least eight teams that could contend. Every year. Even they struggled to keep more than five teams in the top tier.

Intraconferenxe matchups will always take their toll. Just ask Penn State.

Far be it for me to defend Sparty, but from '82-'08 MSU won 7 Conference Titles, 11 Conference Tourney's, went to 22 NCAA's, 8 Frozen Fours, and won 2 National Championships. I'd disagree with your characterization.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

So in 26 years, they won 7 conference titles? Like, every four years? What happened in between those titles? Outside of the 80s, they've been a flash in the pan. So, for 20 years they've been mediocre.

I'll give you the 80s we're not flash in the pan. But outside of that? Shrug.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Eh, looking back, maybe hey haven't always been terrible. I guess that they've been tech bad the last six or seven has me forgetting the rest. Plus they were in the CCHA. A good but hardly great conference.

Goofs won 7 conference titles, 6 conference tourneys, and 2 NC's in the same time period.

Shrug.

Edit: I'd say under Mason and Comley overall they were as good a program as anyone in the country.

And yes, I wouldn't argue at all that the CCHA was as tough top to bottom as the WCHA by any means, but there were some very good teams that came out of it in that time period as well.

The gophers also never finished below 3rd In a conference that actually mattered between 80-94.

Conley ran a pretty mediocre program. He won a single title. Compare that to what the teams out west were doing in the same time. I have the data on my computer. I'll take a look at KRACH and whatnot during the same period.

For now, suffice it to say thy have been a flash in the pan since Comley took over. That's not exactly a short amount of time.

Re: Big Ten Hockey 2016-2017

Also, conference tournaments are an awful way to claim superior teams. Conference titles are orders of magnitude more impressive.

I will second your defense...a perennial power turned into one of the worst teams in college hockey by a clown car coach

You can have a lower seeded team by the time conference tournaments come and finally peaking into the best team. But in the B1G format if you aren't the #1 or 2 seed you will have to win 3 games in 3 days and it's a simple fact you can't get rid of all the lactic acid buildup.
That's what happened to us, by the time you get to the last period of the championship game your legs are gone and there's no more gas in the tank and a team wins not because they were the better team at that point, simply because they were fresher.
