Big Ten Conference Tournament

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

I haven't read this whole thread, but I just saw the word Indianapolis and felt like chiming in. You may have a better chance at drawing 15k to a cricket match in this city than a hockey game. What am I doing in this place?!?

Agreed. Chicago and Pittsburgh would be better, but not by much.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

NCAA parameters? Why does that matter? It's the conference tournament...

I'm done with this. You get what you want, a home game of a tournament, and the rest of the conference gets a prohibitively long drive and 19,500 Gopher fans. "Neutral site." Right.

This ******* obviously has no idea what he's talking about. Have you ever been to the F5 at the X? 19,500 Gopher fans my ***. You need to quit talking.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

My solution for both the B1G and NCHC.... Split between St. Paul, Denver and Detroit.

Start off with the B1G at St. Paul in 2014 and NCHC in Denver. Then in 2015 have the B1G in Detroit and the NCHC in St. Paul. Then keep switching back and forth.

Not a bad idea Jup.

Sounds like a reasonable plan.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

They'll put you at MSG, since you're a big time conference and all. ;)
We'll take Minneapolis and you can have city that shuts down at 430 St. Paul...
Target Center for NCHC? Pepsi Center ?
The rumor was that Target Center was interested in hosting. I am not sure what Jim Scherr is focusing on right now, hiring staff or setting the conference tournament straight. I thought I read he was working on hiring staff before making a decision like this. That puts the NCHC at a disadvantage.

Good idea. Probably not happening but good idea. I'd would rather have the Big Ten somewhere east of MN and the NCHC can have their tournament in the Twin Cities. :)

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Says who? Name me one UW fan that wouldn't like it in Milwaukee. I'd love to see it there on occasion.

Me. I don't think that Milwaukee has a large enough base of hockey fans to support the tournament compared to the likes of Detroit or St. Paul. Either UW is good and it's a success or UW is bad and it is a disaster, I don't see much in the way of middle ground. I'd have more faith if the Showdown had remained in Milwaukee and successful.

I'd love to see it come to Milwaukee (because I live there), but I agree, wouldn't draw well enough consistently.

If they wanted to go to a rotation that added Milwaukee, Columbus, and Pittsburgh once every 9 years:

St. Paul, Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. Paul, Detroit, Columbus, St. Paul, Detroit, Milwaukee/Chicago

I wouldn't have a problem with this rotation, heck drop Milwaukee for Chicago and it might even be better. This rotation would allow everyone to have it in their "backyard" at least once every 9 years (something that isn't a given under the on-campus system), gives people a chance to plan ahead for the trip and explore new cities and uses the NHL arenas in the B10 footprint (as a reward for both the fans and the players)

Why would you want to drop Mil for Chi? Chi would draw even less than Mil and they sure as heck do not deserve the Big $. Atleast in Mil you'd have a larger MN crowd.

Keep the money in the Big, dont spend a dime in Chi until they pony up and go Big.

Because hockey sucks a little more in Mil then in Chi

I just don't think (from a revenue standpoint) they are even looking at anywhere but St Paul and Detroit.

I'd say they generally suck the same. Chicago is just a bigger market. But that doesn't necessarily mean it would translate into bigger numbers for a niche sport like college hockey. Personally, I would take Milwaukee over Chicago for this thing any day.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Chicago is barely a hockey town, when the Hawks are winning sure. But no way would they draw a larger audience for College Hockey, why would it? WI in general is more of a hockey state than Illinois and much closer to MN (where a large number would travel to), MI folk would travel to Mil as well..

I just dont see the logic in Chicago at all, and i'd be very anti Chicago, and that has nothing to do with the drive, I just wouldn't want to spend a dime in that city when it comes to College Hockey.

Illinois doesn't even compare to WI when talking hockey.

The Hawks draw a crowd when winning and thats it, how are why in the heck would they care one bit about College Hockey, nevermind why in the heck they deserve the revenue, thats insane.

Since when is Northwestern (Evanston, IL) not in the B1G? Putting the tournament in Chicago is keeping the money in the B1G, so stop saying it isn't.

St. Paul is still the best place to host it, IMHO. Followed by Detroit.

Jup has the best idea so far...
