Big Ten Conference Tournament

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Great for you, and pointing out pretty simple logic isn't pouting. It's no coincidence the Minnesota contingent are the ones smugly defending this.

Simple logic is not what you're pointing out, using NCAA parameters.

NCAA wants ticket sales and capacity and money. The X has the first two down, easily. History has proved that with the F5. The third one could be argued with tickets, OR a bid. If Detroit, Chi-town, whoever wants to bid? Bid. Go for it. Have a blast. Many other cities won't bid on the tourney, so that kind of narrows down the selection.

Simple logic. BOX.

You know why they get ticket sales? Because it's a home game for your school. And we're not talking the NCAA here, we're talking the Big 10. Six-team conference.

Am I supposed to care what BOX means?

You know how many anti-MN fans attend the F5 every year? Probably not.

And you should care what BOX means, because that is what I just put you in. Your argument about location is invalid due to NCAA parameters, history, etc.

NCAA parameters? Why does that matter? It's the conference tournament...

I'm done with this. You get what you want, a home game of a tournament, and the rest of the conference gets a prohibitively long drive and 19,500 Gopher fans. "Neutral site." Right.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

I figure the best solution to make everyone happy is move it to East Lansing permanently. :D

I don't like this being pushed because Wisconsin books their arena for every weekend in the spring. If this was such a big deal, how did this not come up when they decided the campus site format earlier?

If they end up alternating every year between Xcel and JLA I guess I'll be fine with it. I just don't want to see it be stuck in one place so near a campus like they did with the baseball tourney in Columbus (not that it garners too big a homefield in baseball). I was really looking forward to the campus site tournaments though.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

I'm alright with it alternating between St. Paul and Detroit. It seems the most obvious answer while still making money.

The underlined proves you know not of what you talk about. Visit the F5 this year. I'll gladly discuss this, and show you why you are wrong. I will even share a beer with you. And parameters matter, because of money, money, money. The X puts in the best bid, provides the most ticket sales, and is a quality building. There is no argument against this, period. Facts are facts.

soh: I'd agree with that.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Ohio State fans have indeed been on the wane but I see the signs that with the new coaching staff and the potential they bring for a successful program our numbers will rise. We had 6019 in attendance last Saturday and fans will start travelling to the tournament. As far as a tournament site I don't see anywhere where it's not going to be a pain for someone. My personal experience with Detroit has been a great one and really enjoy the Joe and the experience staying at the Renaissance Center offers and it would be the most convenient location for 4 of the 6 teams and it's a hell of a lot easier to get around in than Chicago. But my experience with the Big Ten is it's all about the $$ so whoever makes the sweetest offer will probably be the winner and the conference will blow smoke up our a*sses with bogus reasons why that city was the best choice.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Gotta laugh at any Michigan fan that whines about an unfair home ice advantage in a playoff format. I mean, how many times has Yost played host to Wolverine games in the NCAAs over the years?

I'd be perfectly fine with a rotation deal between Xcel and Joe Lewis Arena. I have little doubt Xcel will be the more successful venue in the long haul though.

Because the conference wants to make money. It's not going to be held at the United Center in Chicago, which would be half empty, because they'd make far more money in St Paul or Detroit.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

If it's most likely to be an off campus site I can't help but wonder if OSU is putting in for the Blue Jackets home ice, Nationwide Arena, as you guys probably aren't aware that OSU manages that arena now. Logistically it could make sense in that it has the capacity and is one of the newest NHL arenas and has many hotels, bars and all kinds of eateries from take out food to 4 star dining all within an easy walk. OSU won't ever host the Frozen 4 on campus again because none of these things were close by but this place really does have it all (except a winning hockey team).

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

Chicago is hard to get around? Double You Tee Eff? I know the UC is a bit of a hike from any convenient L stop, but it's not that bad.

The people mover and proximity of venues cannot be beat, but Chicago would be a great location to showcase the B1G hockey, especially with the parent offices just 2 mins from O'Hare.

Might even convince Northwestern to get off their *sses.

I thought the Wolverines always went to Grand Rapids for the NCAA's.

Re: Big Ten Conference Tournament

I think St Paul and Detroit are the only locations that will draw well consistently.

I would think so, too.

Chicago would be a fine place for an F4, due to a broader audience, but not for a conference tourney, unless a Chicago area team existed.

I still have recent memories of a 45 minute wait between the first and second toll booths coming into Chicago and they couldn't be more than several miles apart. I will give you I found getting around in town a lot easier than getting in and out of it.

You must be new to college hockey.
I've been around hockey a long time and around OSU's program since it's beginning in '63, just not on the forums. In first round draw Michigan practically always gets Grand Rapids when Grand Rapids is hosting with rare exception and not at Yost. Back me up here Go Blue boys.

Ha. No. We went to Grand Rapids in 2005... That's it.
