BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

Re: BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

Great game tonight. Cats looked strong throughout the game. The penalties NMU took in comparison to what BGSU took were barely anything. From what I heard on the radio no one was mad about Spady's, not even the coaching staff. I look forward to more of the same tomorrow and possibly an even bigger fight after seeing Pietila almost throw down.

Does anyone know why Emily Hack hasn't put out a recap recently?

She had a falling out with the some staff from the team a couple of weeks before the semester ended and has since left the Marquette area.

I hate to say it, but I'm no longer a big fan of fighting and brawls in hockey. Sure, they are entertaining, but I think they really take away from the game and give hockey a thug-like appearance to the general public. I used to relish the possibility of a good brawl, but now I just kind of shrug it off. It's kind of like intentionally throwing at someone in baseball - sure it's part of the game. But its a dirty part of the game that really should end.

I'll probably get called a wuss, or worse for expressing this viewpoint, but its an honest one and it's one I think some other people might share. I hope tomorrow night's game is a clean game and a Wildcat victory.

For those who've looked at the update thread, BG did lose two players for tonight's game (as I originally thought). Shea did get a DQ for fighting and McIntosh got one for grasping the facemask.

And also from the bottom of the box score:
Mark Olver is the 47th player in NMU history to
score 100 points in a career.
Congrats to Mark.

Maybe Hunter blinds should be 40% off? Come on Burdick, there were enough penalties.

Here is a piece of the fight, although it looks like Spady wasn't given a chance to really do some damage, ala Sids.

I take back what I said earlier about fighting in hockey. After seeing someone take a cheap shot at a goalie like that, I hope that NMU smashes someone's head in tomorrow. I had no idea that the guy who went after Stewart was so flagrant and dirty. When I heard about it I thought he just skated up to him and tried to go at hime face-to-face. That was basically a sucker punch.

You said in your post above what I was getting ready to say. Fighting in hockey is necessary for players to police what the ref can't or won't call. For intance, a cross-check to the back which puts a player's face in the boards and sends him to the hospital needs more than a 5 minute major and game ejection. He needs his ***** beat.
Any body know if I can get tonight's game on the web?

I agree with you. When I heard about the fight last night, I assumed it was the result of a team that was frustrated pushing and shoving until things got out of hand. I fully support what Spady did to protect Stewart and think that that is one of the cases where a guy needs to get pummeled. A cross check from behind is another, intentional stick to the head. My comment before was based on my misunderstanding that the fight was just a pile up in front of the goal that Stewart got tangled up in. After seeing someone take a shot like that, its totally different.

NMU has a deal with B2 to watch the games... It's $7 or $8 and you can find links on the NMU Sports webpage...

For those of you that were there, what brought on the cheap shot to Stewie?

In the video it looks like #28, which according to BGSU's roster is Robert Shea. He is one of the players sitting out a game, so this seems to match

Good win for the Cats. I was really happy to see them put Bowling Green away and not allow them to make it close. I would like to see the same thing happen again tonight. They could be just what NMU needs before heading out on a difficult road trip next weekend.

Re: BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

I just can't get over how bad Bowling Green is playing right now.... and Western Michigan. You look at the standings and there are 10 teams and then a black hole.

Western especially after starting the year off 4-0 (Granted that was vs. Mercyhurst and Alabama-Huntsville)

I'm not surprised. I view it as necessary suffering to force the inevitable.

I'm sure there were more on-ice drama than what we could see/hear from the stands. I saw at least one other incident where they shoved Stewie and nothing came from it (this was at the time of T.J.'s first grasping the facemask penalty).

So, I figure BGSU was frustrated and possibly NMU was running their mouths a bit. Those things together can really fan the flames. Long story short whatever lead up to it, it was uncalled for. I wish the refs just let Spady go and kicked No. 28's *** just to teach him a lesson.

Well, the altercation started when Smith was cross checked in the corner. Smith got up and started jawing with the player, and I believe Spady or McAuley jumped in there too and started pushing. This drew the other players in, and one of the BGSU players tackled Olver around the faceoff dot. (which i think drew the extra DQ for the BGSU player) There wasnt much in the way of fighting, more just pushing-shoving, grappling until #28 punched Stewart (BGSU player DQ'd) then Spady went after him in the video (Spady DQ'd). It was at the other end of the ice, so if I have players mixed up or incidents out of place...sorry.

That's kinda what I just assumed... At 6-0, odds are someone is frustrated/peeved... Add is some rousing from the winning team and you have a volatile mix...

Re: BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

Nice game 'Cats. Fourth straight consistent game. Keep it up. :D

Nice response by the 'Cats for sticking up for their teammates.

Re: BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

Im pleased with a 5 point weekend, considering the 'Cats were trailing 3-1 going into the third.

It wasnt a complete effort, as BGSU dominated the 2nd period. Still, 5 points is better than 3 points, and those two extra points could loom large down the road.

I caught the 3rd period on the Web, my first attempt at that. Went well all through the 3rd, but the darn thing locked up last minute of overtime, (is that normal?).
Obviously if the 3rd period effort was put into the 1st or 2nd, a victory would have been at hand.
Let's get it going Cats. Should have been two wins this weekend. Bad enough we tied Tech.

Re: BGSU @ NMU, Jan 15/16: Oh, yeah, we have these games, too...

I haven't had any problems with it locking up for more than 2-3 seconds. I am on cable internet, so it might be connection speed.

That's hockey for you, two completely different games. Good to see some nice back and forth play, and NMU was so close to winning it in OT. Nothing can be done now except congratulate the team for coming alive, hitting hard and earning the points they did.

UNO just got swept by Lake State and we swept them earlier in the year. Gotta keep the intensity up.
