Best Crowd

Re: Reminiscing

Re: Reminiscing

You guys started blowing yourselves when Stout started winning. Congrats! You show up to cheer for a winning team! A true student section would have been there even during the lean times. This board has been around for quite some time, yet you neanderthals started popping up once Stout started winning. I used to attempt to call Jacket hockey on the radio when I was in college, going on 10 years now.

10 years ago I would have been in middle school, and in the last 5 years I have missed 3 home games. Yes I keep track of these things, I have also traveled near and far when I can, I have been to all of the NCHA arenas and I have seen many of the other games also. I even went as far as to drive across the country to see them play in Lake Placid last year. Two friends and I spent our spring break driving from Eugene, Oregon to Lake Placid. Call me a fair weather fan because I could not control how the team did I got here, or how the student section was before my time.

And getting drunk, and being loud for the sake of being loud doesn't make you a good student section. Just makes you obnoxious drunks. There are loud people at the bar every weekend. Would you call that the best bar section?

Again you Cannot read. Everyone from the RC to the East fans say this is what a good student section is. I couldn't find the post but someone from the RC was talking about how it didn't matter what people were yelling "as long as it was loud." As for being loud at the bar, that is our hockey team and it is a great time to see them out.

Re: Best Crowd

I don't think anyone is calling you Stout fans out personally. What you people have done over the past few seasons is great. Love the pride for the team. What people are saying is until Stout started winning, most of us have never heard of Stout....other then when SNC or the other NCHA teams went in and whooped up. MOST of us fans on here will be with our teams through Championships and .500 seasons. Unless you DA have sprinkled your crew with some kind of fairy pixie dust, once your team starts losing again, your crew will die right now. A year after your first NCAA Final Four of course numbers will be strong because you have it installed in your head that "we are the best"... Kind of reminds me of those mid major teams with 10 loses facing another 10 loss team and when they pan the crowd everyone is putting up the "we are #1" finger salute....when in reality they would get SMOKED by a top 10 NCAA team...It's good to have passion, but a couple good years as far as "fans" go is a long ways away from being "the best"....

Re: Best Crowd

PSUChamp::: I understand that, but the storied traditions had to start somewhere. Our program is relatively new, 14 years compared to some people I have seen talking about 100 years. Our fan base unquestionably is being helped by the recent success we have had, but there is a hardcore group of fans here that would be there for the games no matter what.

I also disagree with you on powerofyellowandblack. He directly is calling us out and condtradicting what other posters on here are saying make a good student section.

Re: Best Crowd

Fritz,

Some people just want a PC crowd. Anyone thats been around me knows, I am far from PC...kids or not I believe you can teach your kids to grow up in this world and not have to be PC...however, I also feel you do NOT need to use a four letter word in EVERY cheer/chant/phrase to get a point across. Unlike what "some" people want to say, I 99% of the time do not use curse words. Suck, stupid, blow, moron, goon, ect are not curse words in my book. You will always find a group of people who want to cheer "go team go" and that's it. But I've always felt you can be creative with out swearing.

Secondly, yes Stout is young. And it has to start somewhere yes. And like I said most of any of us on here would stick with a team as most of us are true fans, however and especially with students, a team starts losing and crickets will be heard. That's part of the downfall for having a "student" fan base instead of community. Stay true to your team and keep doing what you're doing. You will come to realize it really doesn't matter what someone tells you on here, in a rink, or the parking lot. I wouldn't go so far to say I am jealous as to whats going on with Stout, but I know I can't wait to move back north and get things started again in Plattsburgh...a student/rowdy/section is what makes college hockey...especially at the DIII level. Some fans don't like it, but almost every player for and against love playing in that kind of atmosphere...

Re: Best Crowd

I agree with PSU champs. Being a Geneseo fan I noticed that they did not draw very well in the early 2000's. I think that when Coach Hills came in, he worked very hard to get students involved (hired a couple marketers) to get more student and community support. Certainly winning helped draw more fan attention and support.

Student loyalty is difficult for any school. Assuming most students don't live permanently in their school's town, student fans will turn over ever four years. If there isn't a winning tradition and/or if there aren't people behind the scenes working to get fans in the stands, it would be difficult to expect to draw very well or have much support.

Let's face it, the majority of people (mostly not on this board!) are casual, fairweather fans. The effect of attracting/drawing fans when a team starts winning can be tremendous.

Re: Best Crowd

You gotta love Geneseo...one of the only places I know that when they are getting beat 5, 6 to nothing, they score and you would have thought they just won a national championship. One of the most loudest "positive" crowds around. There a few that need to learn its not cool to come sit in the middle of the visiting crowd and try and cause problems, but other then that always a good time win or lose

I loved going to Genny...My favorite is the "Safety School" chant that did! Hialrious! Gotta love the pep band too!

Re: Best Crowd

People are jumping on the Stout fans for being bandwagoners but consider the status of the Stout pollsters on this board. They are all students at Stout as far as I have recalled so far. You can't fault them for attending Stout while the team has gotten better. Now if Stout "townies" showed up on the board and started talking smack then you would be able to call them a bandwagoner.

Second, consider this Remy and all others. Would you be a Plattsburgh fan if they were a program for instance say like Lebanon Valley or Concordia WI? Winning breeds fans support, recognition, and noteriety That's why most of the traditional powers of D-III hockey have posters on this board.

There's a reason why Lebanon Valley, Framingham State, Concordia WI etc don't have any active posters on this board. Who here can honestly say they support a team that's .500 or worse EVERY season?

I'll be willing to bet you'll only find a handful if that.

We're all bandwagoners in a sense because I feel comfortable saying if our team NEVER won we wouldnt waste our time following a niche sport like D-III hockey all the time.

NOTE this is different from professional sports as that is a whole different breed. I'm talking about Division III hockey and that is it.

Nothing beats Cornell chanting safety school to Harvard and Princeton:D

or "Princeton's in New Jersey....Princeton's in New Jersey"

classic:cool:

I never said they were most sportsmanlike crowd. And if you say that their fans are cheering even if they are losing by a considerable amount, wouldn't that make them more supportive than most fans? Whether they know the game better than other fans is another topic, but just the fact that they're out there cheering and supporting is good enough for me.

I agree the taunting and running the flag by the Platty fans after scoring was just asking for trouble.

Re: Best Crowd

No I was being sincere. Geneseo is a great place to watch a game...I know you didn't say they were, I am saying they are. Never had an issue with the majority of the fans at Geneseo. Always a good time there win or lose. Wasn't busting on the whole at all...I would actually put Geneseo in probably the top 5 of eastern schools.

B.S. Speak for yourself. I have never, EVER been a bandwagon fan, in any sport. The closest I have come is Kansas basketball, and even then I started liking them simply because my dad did, and he liked them because they were winners. I have stood by my teams since I started liking them. ALL of them. I was a Packer fan during the 80's. Watched every game. They won like 5 games during the 80's. Brewers....do I even have to spell out how much they suck? Does it matter to me? No. Wisconsin. They were even worse than the Packers in the 80's. Still loved them. Bandwagon fans have no place for me. I suppose next you are going to say what great fans the Marlins had in '97 and '03, playing for tens of people during the regular season, and then playing for a packed crowd in the playoffs. I will concede that the Stout posters here are mostly Stout students. And kudos for them for caring about their team so much. But they are making it sound like their student section is the second coming of Christ, and can will their team to victory when they dare.

Read my post again. First off I said this was strictly a D-III college hockey observation and not a professional sports one. Like I said, that is a totally different breed and animal.

Second, I'm a Mets, Bills, Rangers, and Bulls fan...I have liked all four my whole life and never once have even come close to wavering. I've been through plenty of crappy seasons and heartbreak but I'm still a fan so please save me that speech. I've suffered enough and haven't wavered. I even sunk money into Bills season tickets the last two seasons only to watch the franchise crumble even more than it already had. I've paid to travel to and paid ridiculous amounts of money for overpriced seats at MSG and HSBC for Sabres/Rangers games.

Third, I don't care what you say. If Superior won two or three games at most every season you wouldn't waste your time following them. I certainly wouldnt be following Elmira or Oswego if that was the case. I wouldn't travel on a weeknight 2:30 hours to Hamilton, Morrisville, Utica, Cortland, etc to see a D-III hockey team play that wasn't any good. Sorry not happening. There are things life outside of D-III hockey and if the teams I support weren't good I wouldnt be here. That's what I'm trying to say by using the term "bandwagoner."

Like i said, winning breeds fan support and recognition and that's why most all the traditional powers in D-III hockey have fans that post on this board.

Then you are not a true fan of your team. I would wager my left nut that I would still be following Superior hockey if they win 2 games a year. I have to use vacation to see them play, for the love of God.

Well I guess you're against the norm because you can simply look at the allegiances most posters on this board have and then at attendance figures for programs that traditionally suck to see that this is the case.

It has nothing to do with being a "true fan"

All I'm saying is that if Elmira wasn't a good hockey team when I was young, I never would have been subjected to going to their games because not many other people would be there. There aren't a lot of people that support five win or less D-III hockey teams that didn't go to that school which was my case with Elmira.

I would have probably never ended up at Oswego if it wasn't for D-III hockey. It was a factor in my college decision along with Cross-Country and Journalism. If hockey wasn't a part of my decision I probably would have gone to Brockport or Ithaca.

Re: Best Crowd

At least Stout has the title for being most defensive about the quality of their student section.
Not to mention most myopic and self promoting. There are a decent number of student posters from Stout on here, but to be fair half of them are Blue Devil Radio's alter egos anyway.

Re: Best Crowd

PrezdeJohnson09, you said "Unfortunately I havent been to Utica in about three years but they draw some awesome crowds there and that place gets LOUD when the fog horn blows for a Utica goal and they have over 3,000 people in there regularly. Im not sure what's left of the Pioneer Posse but last time I was there they were starting to grow into a pretty good cheering section".

We are very much alive.I think Oswego and Utica are tied for having the best crowds/fans at their games.
