Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Agreed with 527 and schiegs, best game that I have seen the Falcons play in a couple of years. Frosh look great, Argue is back to his freshman form in net, and French should have a monster season. I will save my detailed comments for the UNH thread, as my fellow UNH fans are besides themselves. :-)

We're waiting Snively65 with bated breath :D ...hats off to the Falcons...they deserved the win. Good luck the rest of the way!

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Congrats, Bentley. French and Argue looked great out there. Felt like we had very few solid chances, a testament to how you played, specially after getting on track midway thru the 1st. You certainly made the most of your chances.

Good luck the rest of the way.

Does Bentley stream their home games?

NU does, for the Bentley fans not coming Saturday: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/northeastern/

They do, but single game passes cost $10... https://portal.stretchinternet.com/bentleyhockey/

They have switched over to a new service for streaming this year, but in the past the quality has been lacking... and I wouldn't expect any different this year. If you want a top quality announcer however, Dan Rubin is your guy!

Much appreciated. Grateful for the tip on quality. I'll be tuning into it via radio in all likelihood, NU will have their student broadcasters there but I may bounce between Rubin and them, get different perspectives. Hope for another good series this year, though I'd like the results to be different :D

Hope that the Falcons have not peaked too early this year.

Game day. Let's build on the throttling of UNH and pick up our 5th straight win vs Northeastern!!

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2016-2017: The (Max) French Revolution

Starting the season against 3 HEA teams and going 1-1-1, not bad at all. Especially considering the amount of time we spent short handed throughout those 3 games (48 mins!!). Makes me think Atlantic Hockey play is going to be a lot more fun for us (and less stressful).

With regards to the NEU games, I think the first game was absolutely a win for us. The scoreboard may have read 1-1, but the takeaways from that game were enormous. First of all, the JAR was PACKED and everybody was on their feet. For 3 straight years we've tried to get the entire crowd standing but have never been successful, until Friday night. The atmosphere was amazing. Myself and fellow Top Shelf members were continuously saying to each other, "can you believe this?! We did it!!" It sounds a little ridiculous, but it was really a pinch-yourself type of game where we couldn't believe what was happening.

In terms of our play, and just like Coach Soder said, we should be extremely proud of how our boys battled on Friday night. When we were even strength (which wasn't too often), we played them even, if not out-played them. I truly believe we should've won that game and thought that our play showed a lot of promise. Saturday night, however, was a little bit of a different story. Two very sloppy goals let in early (one of which was an own goal) put us in a hole we couldn't dig out of. But, those two goals are not the reason we lost the game. Not only did we play poorly, but the Huskies really played like a much better team and absolutely beat us.

Talking specifics, pretty much everything we did right at UNH we continued to do right on Friday night. The freshman continued to impress, French and Schmidt played well, and rising star Alexey Solovyev looked more and more like a team leader with his dominating play. Not to mention Argue standing on his head all night with 35 saves. We had our moments Saturday, including some impressive individual efforts from French and Solovyev, but overall our team play was pretty abysmal. Passing was very poor, defense was particularly sloppy, and Argue, whilst 4/6 of his GA were mainly due to other factors, did not look particularly sharp.
It was also nice to see freshman Ryder Gorowsky and sophomore Jake Ahlgren in the lineup this weekend, with Ryner picking up his first career assist and Ahlgren continuing his good play from last season. That line of Ahlgren-Callin-Gorowsky Saturday was one that I predicted in the offseason, and I expect to see more of it as the season goes on.

Couldn't have said it better. That game was the culmination of 3 years of hard work and disproportionate results. 3 years of frustration... well worth it. If that is the future... boy is it a bright one. Even more exciting... we've found a fresh crop of new freshman that appear more than capable of carrying the mantle we have held for the last three years. I think the only moment that could top that game will be returning as alumni next winter to see our new rink in the flesh and blood. That will definitely be another "pinch yourself" moment!

I'm very intrigued to see what the turnout/atmosphere for the next games will be. Hopefully Friday set a precedent that will stick for the rest of this season, and beyond. I really think that it will. Our group of 5 or 6 kids has grown each year to the point where we had 20+ kids standing up top with us. Really looking forward to the rest of this year. It's going to be special.

As far as play on the ice... Friday was everything we needed. This team has had tenancies to lay an egg in big games, which hampers our goal of increasing spirit and interaction at games. They gave the crowd a reason to come back on Friday and that was exactly what they needed to do.

I was able to see only the Saturday night game but from what I saw, your guys clearly deserve a tip of the Husky helmet. Considering the disparity between the two teams in terms of facilities and other resources, I thought Bentley looked well-organized and well-coached, and they clearly didn't pack it in when the eventual outcome was no longer in doubt. All the best to your guys the rest of the way. (BTW, I think I'd break out in hives in the event NU (not NEU) and Bentley wound up in the same regionals.)

Many thanks for this summary; sorry that I could not make either game, as I was in Maine. Only looking at box score, it seemed to me that the Friday night game was a battle for the ages, with way too little 5-5 action. Nevertheless, great to come away with a point for the tie.

Let's falcon build the rink already...

@BentleyTopShelf

I agree that the Top Shelf crew has made an impressive change to the atmosphere at the JAR over the past four years. And, more important, good to hear that some of you will be back as alums, as that is really what a college hockey team's following is all about.

Thanks for comments Split-N. It must be nice for your team to shake the albatross of four straight losses and a tie to the Falcons on Saturday night. Before Bentley got games against my alma mater UNH the past two seasons, I thought that my best opportunity would be for a meeting between the Falcons and the Cats in a post-season regional. My hope now is that these games against quality HEA opponents will prepare the Falcons to play well against tough AHC opponents Air Force and RIT the next two weekends.

Bentley now leads the nation in attendance as % of capacity at 100%.

:-D

Not quite true, according to USCHO stats. http://www.uscho.com/stats/attendance/division-i-men/2016-2017/
:)

Holy Cross has 153%, Mercyhurst 145.5%, RIT 125.1%, Penn State 102.4%, and then Bentley at 100%.

Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, and RIT come from playing home games at a different Arena (DCU, Erie Insurance Arena, Blue Cross).
