Bentley University Hockey 2015-2016: The Quest for 60-Minute Hockey

That game exemplifies the title of this thread. The first 40 minutes may have been the best I've seen the Falcons play all season, the last 20 rivaled the worst. Disappointing to head into the break under .500, hopefully the boys can put together a strong second half of the season.

Yup, respective third period SOG in box score say it all; although the Crusaders are a good team, very disappointing. One thing that I noticed on Friday night is that the refs allowed the Holy Cross goalie to kick the cage off its posts without penalties when the going got tense, just like their Tony Quesada did a few years ago against Bentley during a tight postseason game.

As a clarification, the net was off the mooring and nobody blew it dead despite an official skating right by. We had a good look at the overhead replay system in the booth. Berrafato tried to call out a couple of times to no response so he just shoved the net all the way off.

Honestly not the reason Bentley lost this weekend but I was disheartened by AHC officials at various points during the weekend. Calls will happen (both ways) but they were pretty inconsistent. And to be honest I've tried to cut them some slack.

That said the 13-2 shot total in the third period is especially stark considering two things:

1) the goal came on the 11th shot of the period when HC outshot Bentley 11-0 at that point, I believe.

2) It was actually a knuckling shot that I don't think HC thought would go in. Given how well Antoni played, my heart sank for him because he played his lights out in that third period. Can't ask much more from him given his two night performance against a first place team who should probably be ranked. It was clear on net without traffic or velocity from outside the circles somewhere north of the dots and south of the blue lines.

Agreed that Gabe has been playing great since Jayson's injury.

But, Dan, do you have overhead video from just before Berrafato pulled the net all the way off, as if you do, you should see that that he also knocked it off initially, as he did on two other occasions in that period. I was standing at rink side just to his left, so I had a pretty view at what he was doing.

Yes we do have overhead video - it's what's used for the refs in video review of goals with a shot of the time clock. What Berrafato did was no different than what any other goalie would do. There are several people in the press box who watched it with us from both schools, and nobody thought he was doing anything wrong. Had it been noticed, it would've been pointed out by Bentley skaters and we would've been able to see it. Watching him from that camera angle was inconclusive to anything.

You're of course more than welcome to your opinion, but from up top, this didn't even come up in conversations.

Opinion, or observation; all that I know is what I saw, right shoulder lifting up on the cross bar, a few seconds before he really pulled it off to get the refs' attention; did the same thing two other times in the period.

Nice AH column this week, BTW.

Thanks!

As I've mentioned, everyone is open to their own interpretation of things. THat's what makes discussion boards like these so great.

Gabe Antoni now only 0.015 behind Jayson Argue in GAA; nice to have solid goaltending going into the second half.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2015-2016: The Quest for 60-Minute Hockey

Any word on Argue? Has he been dressing?

Dressed as the backup for the Holy Cross series. More than likely being held out because it was the end of the first half of the year, and with the month-long break, it didn't make sense to put him in there unless absolutely necessary. After the time off, dealing with an injury, I can't see why it would be worth risking him being rusty on the last weekend of the semester against one of the hottest teams in the league. As it turns out, Gabe Antoni played great and goes into break on a bit of a hot streak.

I'm sure Argue will be back in the crease in the second half, though Antoni has certainly earned some reps down the stretch as well to keep all goalies fresh.

If I were Soderquist, I would alternate Argue and Antoni during the second half until one of them falters. Given that Antoni is a senior, and was pretty much lights out except for the first Niagara and UNH games, I think that he has earned more starts, and their stats are essentially identical. Good problem to have.

Game day! Will be interested to see tonight's lineup after the long break.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2015-2016: The Quest for 60-Minute Hockey

Rough go Saturday night. Looked like break hangover, travel probably didn't help. Much better game Sunday. Bright spot having 2 solid goalies again though. AFA looks better than most believe, they will beat more good teams. Nice to see what big Chugg kid has after not playing since Oct. Huge asset (no pun intended :)). Don't see him leaving the lineup, really tough to play against, heavy shot. More travel though, see what weekend brings.

Thanks for the report, Ronnieb. Almost game back on Saturday night; always good to score an EAG, even coming up short. Great to have Argue and Chugg back. Was surprised that Antoni did not get the start on Sunday. Big weekend for French, picking up 5 points. Next weekend in Pittsburg will be tough also, and RIT will be looking for revenge on return to the JAR the following weekend. But, I am ok with the 2 points in the Springs for now.

Antoni got the W on Sunday. Looked good as usual.

That is really cool; thanks for posting.

I must have mixed up reading the two box scores, so good to see that both goalies got a start this past weekend. My guess is that this splitting of goaltending duties will continue this weekend.

Max French now 11th in scoring, and tied for third with 1.60 Pts/GM.

Pitiful performance in Pittsburgh this weekend. Five of next six games at home, and Falcons will need most of these 12 points to climb back into it.

Re: Bentley University Hockey 2015-2016: The Quest for 60-Minute Hockey

Wow, what is lower than pitiful? Way different team than Sunday at Air Force. I give RMU credit, but not that much. For a team that is supposed tops in defense, worst i have seen all season. Goal tending was fine. Don't put enough pucks on net. Could have a lot more shots. Got thrown around like rag dolls. Need more size against top teams. Lost almost every battle, beat to every puck, flat footed watching the play, especially around the net. Power play might have been 0-fer the weekend. There are definitely guys on the ice this weekend, that should view from the stands indefinitely.

Hello all,

Are tickets still 6 or 7 bucks at the door? Taking in both games and introducing local hockey to some area transplants and don't want to mislead them on the price.

Fyi, they are French and know nothing about hockey so they will probably be rooting for the officials!;)
