Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride
Ok folks here's some interesting stat tidbits. Last year, Bentley played horrifically on defense at times, so I decided to measure +/- as my key stat (plus-minus). Plus-minus measures team defense and shows certain players effectiveness on the defensive end. Offense is measured more accurately by goals and assists, so we'll take that out of the equation momentarily.
Bentley is sitting at a -11 this year so far. That includes a whopping -25 for players combined in the 5-1 loss to Clarkson, where they were outshot 53-25. If you take that out of the equation, the team is sitting at a +14. That's a huge swing, and shows you how bad that Clarkson game really was.
A couple of interesting stat breakdowns as well. First, Nudy-Cloutier-Gensler as a line together are +8, playing only 2 games together as a unit. In the 3-3 tie against Clarkson, all 3 goals were surrendered by the Koudys-Campanelli-Fitzstephens line, netting all 3 a minus-3 for that game individually. When paired without Fitzstephens, Campanelli is even and Koudys is +2. That tells me that the chemistry on that line was pretty much nonexistant and should probably be abandoned in comparison to Nudy-Cloutier-Gensler.
As a team unit, for a team that's only 1-3-1 and lost a game 5-1, Cloutier (who has a -3 on his sheet) is only at a -1 so far. Gensler is at +1 and Nudy is at +2. Mike Switzer is also at a +2, and Micah Williams is Even. The most alarming stat is that only one Bentley defenseman is over even, and only two are even or plus. Everyone else is minus, which shows the defense as a unit is still collectively weaker than what we could hope for.
Let's compare that to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers have zero players at Even or Plus. Patrick Knowlton, whose the all-everything at Sacred Heart with 100 points, is at -3. Berube is -4, and the defense has 3 guys at -4 or worse. That includes the top defender (Stretch) who is at -5. This tells me the team is a terrible defensive team, although the scores would indicate as such.
Just some interesting tidbits to chew on heading into tomorrow. And, as a final note, I know I mentioned Bobby "The Human Penalty" Preece last week or earlier this season already. Last season Bobby had 48 penalties for 118 minutes, averaging 2.45 minutes a penalty. While he drew the most ire of officiating, Ryan Kayfes had the most severe penalties - averaging 2.7 minutes per penalty (27 penalties for 73 minutes).
So far this year, Cloutier is the worst offender with 5/10.
Reminder that the game tomorrow will be televised via America One (the new name for B2 Networks)!.
www.bentleyfalcons.com will have the link, even though there is a charge.
Big game towards the Eastern pod tomorrow. Let's go get 'em Falcons!
