Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

RPI fan here, I thought your team played well and clean. It was a good match and I wish you luck this season.

Thanks! Didn't see the game or anything other than a stat sheet, so this is good to hear. RPI is always a tough opponent.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Interesting lines that I had not expected, but then I have not been to any practices this season. Good to see that the Falcons hung in there and made a game of it down the stretch last night. Will be interesting to see if they can keep the Engineers off the scoreboard a little longer than they did with the Bobcats last night, in which case they might surprise us.

Well, looks like the Falcons succeeded in keeping the Engineers off the scoreboard for the first period at least. And, good to see a freshman give up only one even-strength goal. I like the depth at that position, along with the experience at defense this season, which should keep the Falcons in some games until the lines begin to gel. Would like to see us bring back a couple of points from Clarkson, which is playing well so far this season.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Great to watch your team play again. Unfortunately the penalty box goers weren't quite as fun as last year, but it's all good. :D Look forward to playing you guys again if the teams agree to another game.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Falcons were the only AH team to pick up a point in OOC play this past weekend with their 3-3 tie against Clarkson in the Saturday night game, after losing 5-1 on Friday night; it is a start. Falcons could surprise at Matthews this coming Saturday night.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

One person so far has picked Bentley to upset Northeastern this coming Saturday night in the Atlantic Hockey Pick 'Em thread; I hope that XCTiger is correct!

Well, someone needs to keep this thread going, so congrats to the Falcons and Joe Calvi on their upset OOC win 2-1 tonight at Northeastern. So, Bentley begins AH play against Sacred Heart this Wednesday night with some solid OOC effort so far despite their 1-3-1 record. Unfortunately,

I am in Denver this week, so will not see the Falcons play until UConn comes to the JAR on November 19th.

Go Falcons!

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Many Thanks to the Falcons for making me look good....

Great OOC week for the AHA. HC, Bentley, and RIT with wins, and UConn with the tie. Should be an interesting season.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Snives - I've fallen asleep at the wheel of the Bentley thread, as per the usual. I'll be awake come Wednesday when the Pioneers are in town.

Great to see an upset of a Hockey East team, albeit that Northeastern is really struggling out of the gate. It's always a big win when Bentley can go into a barn of a big time school and beat them. I know the feeling of seeing that score gave me the warm fuzzies.

I'm starting to get the drift that the goaltending situation is a 3-way open competition. With 3 goalies who have had good stretches and bad stretches, Calvi's outing yesterday might mean a 3-way rotation to figure out who can play. Calvi was the #3 goalie last week behind Rank and Komm. Plus where calvi's the senior, it's good to see him step in and show the youngsters how it's done. I suspect Calvi will get substantial playing time with Rank as per the last 2 years, but I also feel Komm will see some time in between. Where the schedule is so broken p, it'll be great to see how this plays out.

Schedule ahead is very weird - game on Wednesday followed by 9 days off.

Well played Bentley. Your team played with conviction & results well deserved.

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

As a person who has eaten, slept, and breathed hockey for the better part of a decade, it's probably the worst feeling in the world when an injury is as serious as this. Broken bones heal, ligaments require surgery, and as long as someone can lead a full life, injuries (even career-ending ones) are recognized as part of the game. When it involves something of this magnitude, I'm reminded that it's just a game, and even though the game has been very good to me, it's in perspective.

Best wishes to Jesse Martin for a full recovery. Hockey is secondary to the game of life.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

So we're heading into Wednesday with the predicament of predicaments. Three goaltenders and one spot, and some interesting stats and tidbits. First off, Calvi got AHA goaltender of the week. Which is saying something that 2 weeks ago he was the #3, even though he's the senior. Komm and Rank, I don't know what to make of this early in the season, especially with Calvi's injury last year and Rank's "let 'em in" philosophy displayed after the UMass game. Komm - hell it's only been less than 5 games. I can't make anything out of that.

Other tidbits - both Nudy and Gensler went +2 against CLarkson in a 3-3 tie, paired together with Cloutier in the middle. Dustin's return has been something I've been waiting for, and he's registered 10 PIM in the first part of the season. Not anything to wag a stick at, but I know he had 2 penalties against Northeastern, including 2 for roughing (also known as the Bobby Preece Special). Micah Williams has 8, and it's still unknown who's going to grab the enforcer role for the Falcons.

Sacred HEart is coming to town on Wednesday, and they're reeling. They got slaughtered by Colgate, 5-0, and they struggled to 0-1-1 against Canisius in the first weekend. Granted, a team with a potent offense gets bottled up by Colgate's Neutral Zone Trap defense (especially is obstruction calls don't get called, which is an ECAC hallmark), but your guess is as good as mine as to what to make of the Pioneers. I'll hopefully be doing some fact digging tonight and tomorrow to gear up for the game on Wednesday, especially since it's the first of 3 against Sacred HEart this year under the new scheduling.

These are the games Bentley need to really win since the winner of the pod will get an automatic first round bye. With the level of competition being where it was in the standings last year, this could be a major jumpstart for Bentley in the Eastern Division.

More to follow once I figure out what the hooey to make of this.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Props to you guys for taking out NU at Matthews...that's no easy task. Would love to see Bentley do well and make some noise in AH

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Ok folks here's some interesting stat tidbits. Last year, Bentley played horrifically on defense at times, so I decided to measure +/- as my key stat (plus-minus). Plus-minus measures team defense and shows certain players effectiveness on the defensive end. Offense is measured more accurately by goals and assists, so we'll take that out of the equation momentarily.

Bentley is sitting at a -11 this year so far. That includes a whopping -25 for players combined in the 5-1 loss to Clarkson, where they were outshot 53-25. If you take that out of the equation, the team is sitting at a +14. That's a huge swing, and shows you how bad that Clarkson game really was.

A couple of interesting stat breakdowns as well. First, Nudy-Cloutier-Gensler as a line together are +8, playing only 2 games together as a unit. In the 3-3 tie against Clarkson, all 3 goals were surrendered by the Koudys-Campanelli-Fitzstephens line, netting all 3 a minus-3 for that game individually. When paired without Fitzstephens, Campanelli is even and Koudys is +2. That tells me that the chemistry on that line was pretty much nonexistant and should probably be abandoned in comparison to Nudy-Cloutier-Gensler.

As a team unit, for a team that's only 1-3-1 and lost a game 5-1, Cloutier (who has a -3 on his sheet) is only at a -1 so far. Gensler is at +1 and Nudy is at +2. Mike Switzer is also at a +2, and Micah Williams is Even. The most alarming stat is that only one Bentley defenseman is over even, and only two are even or plus. Everyone else is minus, which shows the defense as a unit is still collectively weaker than what we could hope for.

Let's compare that to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers have zero players at Even or Plus. Patrick Knowlton, whose the all-everything at Sacred Heart with 100 points, is at -3. Berube is -4, and the defense has 3 guys at -4 or worse. That includes the top defender (Stretch) who is at -5. This tells me the team is a terrible defensive team, although the scores would indicate as such.

Just some interesting tidbits to chew on heading into tomorrow. And, as a final note, I know I mentioned Bobby "The Human Penalty" Preece last week or earlier this season already. Last season Bobby had 48 penalties for 118 minutes, averaging 2.45 minutes a penalty. While he drew the most ire of officiating, Ryan Kayfes had the most severe penalties - averaging 2.7 minutes per penalty (27 penalties for 73 minutes).

So far this year, Cloutier is the worst offender with 5/10.

Reminder that the game tomorrow will be televised via America One (the new name for B2 Networks)!. www.bentleyfalcons.com will have the link, even though there is a charge.

Big game towards the Eastern pod tomorrow. Let's go get 'em Falcons!

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

OUTSTANDING game on Wednesday. The JAR was packed for the first one, and the team played great. It was an enjoyable experience.

The rink has been renovated! There's a new press box and new glass over by the locker rooms. The locker rooms are no longer public viewable, and there's BENTLEY sprayed across those board runners. So it looks professional and is pretty impressive.

The press box is brand new and covers most of the center ice seats. There are roughly 5-6 rows remaining, although not many people sat there anyways.

There is also a new goal horn installed. It is loud! Very impressive to create a home ice advantage that never existed.

I would estimate the crowd at close to 700. Which isn't a lot but the seats were 3/4s full.

The game itself was great. Teams hung tight for the first period, and Joe Calvi had the save of the year. After it was scoreless, Bentley opened up Sacred Heart in the 2nd period, generating offense. Jared Rickord's first goal was a good ripper, and Hartung's in the 3rd might be the most impressive goal I've seen to date. It was a one-time from right wing has on the slot. Rattled the water bottle. Down 5-1 late, SH pulled their goalie and scored one after Koudys was assessed a major. Koudys had 2, Peterson had 2 (including an empty netter). The defense was fairly solid and stayed on their blocks in their zone. Good breakouts. Impressive win for the Falcons.

As always, my one point of contention... too many penalties. There were 3 majors assessed (2 to sacred heart), including a game misconduct to a 4th line freshman for a blatant boarding call along centers. It was terrible to watch, even though Koudys stood right up. Later in game, Koudys received a major for kneeing, which is not a good penalty to take. It can seriously injure a player and derail careers. It will almost certainly be addressed by coaching staff.

Other than that, it was a fantastic game to watch and I'm looking forward to UConn. My only beef is such a long layoff before Niagra next weekend. Too bad it will come at the expense of such great momentum. Hopefully they can keep it up when they head to the Falls area.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Back on-line after a week away in Denver; guess that I should spend more time there, as it seemed to bring Bentley some good luck back here this past week. :-)

Thanks, Northeastern and Salvo1017, for your kind words about Bentley's win over NU; thanks to Vizoroo for posting the the sobering link to DU Jesse Martin's injury; and thanks to Humanoid for numerous insightful analyses of the Falcons over the past few days.

Good luck to the Falcons at Niagara next weekend, and I look forward to seeing my team for the first time this season against the Huskies at the JAR on the 19th.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Does anybody have any notes or specifics on Niagra? I honestly don't know anything about them and haven't seen them since they played 2 at Brown a few years ago (and by that I mean last decade).

I'll do some digging, but I haven't the faintest idea what the Eagles are like, except they're Purple and it gets cold in the winter. Hopefully a NIagra fan will read this and let us know some insight into the program?

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Only second home game of the season for Bentley at the JAR this Friday night; wonder how many fans will be there for the second period? USCHO says attendance was 375 against Sacred Heart on November 3rd. I plan to arrive early to watch practice, and perhaps eavesdrop from time to time on the UNH-BU NESN game if being shown in the admin room near the entrance.
