Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

Ok, it now has been over two weeks since Niagara released their schedule, and Bentley and Holy Cross apparently still have not figured out when they wish to play their third game against one another this coming season (I am assuming a home and home for the last weekend of the AHA regular season). What gives? The fans are waiting patiently to make their travel plans! :D

Hey! You say that with a huge grin, but I really am waiting to make my travel plans! HC is one of 5 places I have yet to visit (UML and Yale are two more in the New England area), and I want to plan my visit! And it looks like that third game (excluding the H-H likely scenario the last week of the season) is going to factor large in my travel!

I've been contemplating those "arenas I've visited" sig blocks. If I did that, the sig block would be longer than the messages - I've got 64 down and 5 to go (well, more considering BSU and UMD are in new arenas this year).

***? Can't they count?

Bentley posted a partial schedule. I just posted to the 2010-2011 schedules thread. They truncated the schedule. Yay guys!

Interesting that the Bentley game at Sacred Heart on February 5th 2011 will be played at the Arena at Harbor Yards in Bridgeport; have you been to watch a game there, Glazewsr?

Nope; I've been to the traditional home venues of the D-I teams (plus some NCAA venues). If this becomes common, I'll make the trek eventually!

This is a great step forward for Sacred Heart. Hopefully they begin to play a few games a year there. If so, it can certainly help recruiting and getting OOC home games.

It is a great venue to watch a hockey game. I went to the Regionals there in 2009, sat in the top row and it was very nice.

Argghh, including the game in which UVM put the puck through the Air Force netting.....

Sadly, I do not think that Bentley has an equivalent potential home game venue away from the JAR, although an AHA double-header that included Bentley was played at the Garden during the NHL lock out a few years ago.

I know that logistically it may be too costly for the league but to have an annual "Showcase" like that again could be great for the league and for the teams like Bentley, SHU, and AIC that play in small municipal rinks. Schedule a double or triple header of hockey at some of the major facilities within the league footprint (Boston, Worcester, Hartford - we'll leave the league playoffs for Rochester). I would think it would be a great experience for the players and would let people see the level of play of the AHA.

This is an awesome idea. Would also give a chance to see if it would be worthwhile moving the tournament away from Rochester. Could make it "put-up-or-shut-up" time for those who complain that Rochester is an unfair location and too far away from the "heartland" of the AHA.

Hey everyone.

I haven't really read up on what people have to say, so take this with a grain of salt.

League showcases are great for the league, but they tend to hurt non conference schedules. The Ivy League has scheduled an Ivy Showcase for the last few years at rotating venues. For the most part, it's been Dartmouth-Brown-Yale and a Canadian college (at least from my memory). It actually does not draw great because it's a nonconference game against a conference opponent, who they'll see twice over the course of the season. Plus it's at the beginning of the year, and it tends to fly so far under the league radar that I used to think it was actually exhibition games (the game against the Canadian school actually is an exhibition).

I hate the Ivy Showcase, especially because in recent years, Brown (who I was associated with) usually saw Yale int he playoffs. So that's 5-6 games against Yale, one game of which is a non conference throwaway. I actually preferred it when Brown played UConn and AIC, and lost to our beloved Bentley Falcons last year. It was just a different face, and a different look. And where different conferences influence different styles of play, there's only so much Ivy League I couldtake.

From a conference standpoint, it makes travel very easy. Everybody knows where they're going, and typically the opponents are not very far away. PRovidence-New Haven-Hanover isn't a terrible drive. For the AHA, scheduling Holy Cross-Bentley-Sacred Heart (or UConn) wouldn't be a bad idea. I just don't like it.

That said, I think Sacred Heart and any showcase tournament event is fantastic. Sacred Heart vs. UConn will be a great attraction in the state of Connecticut, especially since I've heard that it might be used as a springboard to try and prove Hartford as a viable hockey market (see also: Whalers, Hartford). Army-Colgate at the new Joe Kennedy Jr. Rink in Hyannis will be awesome (great facility, great fans, and two good teams going at it). I'm excited to see that one personally (being a native of cape Cod).

That's what I'm looking for, moreso than a league showcase event.

again, I didn't really read all the entries and postings so correct me if i'm wrong on anything here (it's welcome criticism!).

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

As a follow up posting, I would love to see Bentley scheduled as some form of Massachusetts Invitational involving non-Beanpot schools at either Agganis or the Garden, and yes I see the irony of saying Agganis there.

Bentley-Umass-UmassLowell-and Merrimack come to mind right away. Also potential to bring in an ECAC school like Brown (even though Brown is playing extremely ambitious non-con schedules for a while).

The state of Rhode Island recently instituted the Ocean State Cup - where PC, Brown, and Bryant will playoff for it based on head-to-head. Rumor has it they're trying to move some of the games to larger locales like the Dunk (even though PC plays home hoop there). It would also open the door to play the Mayor's Cup hockey game at the dunk (where the P-Bruins play) for PC-Brown. Something like that is what I have in mind.

Re: Bentley Falcons 2010-2011: Reclaim The Pride

I miss the Q Cups at Quinnipiac's old barn, Northford Arena. I attended 15-16 October 2004 when Bentley tied Air Force 2-2 and Quinnipiac beat AIC 3-2 in the first round, and then Bentley lost to Quinnipiac 3-0 and Air Force beat AIC 4-0 in second round. I also attended 14-15 October 2005 when Bentley beat Air Force 3-1 and Quinnipiac beat RIT 6-2 in the first round, and then Bentley lost to Quinnipiac 6-0 and RIT beat Air Force 5-2 in the second round. But, then Quinnipiac built a new arena on campus and bolted for the ECAC.

Looking forward to attending the Quinnipiac and RPI games the weekend of 15-16 October this year, but tourneys are fun, even if OOC games are against some in-league teams.

Two AHA games played at the Fleet (aka da Gahden) in 2005 were the Bentley 4-1 loss to UConn on Tuesday, February 8th, and the Holy Cross 5-2 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, February 12th; were there any others?

Re: 2010-2011 roster

Re: 2010-2011 roster

Three freshmen listed on 2010-2011 roster so far:
Justin Breton, forward
Zach Marquinsky, defense
Branden Komm, goalie

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/reports/roster.php?td=8

Komm posted a 91% save percentage up at Northfield Mount Hermon, and is a local product out of Massachusetts. he did have a GAA of 3.00, which is a little disconcerting, but the 91% for saves is pretty decent. They'll be able to work with him, seeing as Komm wouldn't be asked to step in for the next year or so IMHO. With Rank and Calvi entrenched, he's a decent #3 option (much better than Vitale), and he presents a good chance to keep goaltending fresh once Calvi graduates. Rank has proven he can't handle the load on his own, so Komm will need to be ready to go as a soph. in 2011-2012.

Breton is from Fitchburg and played in the EJHL for the Junior Bruins. He posted 24-30-54 numbers in 45 games. He also posted 22 PIM and 4 SHG. Where scoring seemed to lack, he'll fill a void up front. At 6', 190, he's built a lot like Campanelli, harkening back to the larger sized forwards that the team has gotten away from in the past couple of years.

The biggest concern is that he needs to step in right away. Scoring is at a premium on this team, and the league puts a lot of goals up. If Bentley is going to compete in the AHA, they'll needa lot of goals, so Breton will probably have to step in right away. As a forward, I envision him playing as a third line forward alongside players like Stonacek and Trottier.

Any idea on what the lines would/should look like this year?

I have not been to any practices, but here are some wild guesses:

Koudys, Cloutier, Peterson
Kent, Campanelli, Nudy
Trottier, Hartung, Stonacek
Bahnemann, Breton, Robert or Quartuccio

Switzer, Kayfes
Bonnett, Graffunder
Williams, Marquinsky

Rank, Calvi

I like this idea, the beanpot is starting to get old. I'm a life long BC fan and a Merrimack grad. Whenever BC and BU are lined up to play eachother in the first game the title game is god awful....

I would love to see some sort of holiday tournament (perhaps not at the garden...it would be to cavernous and echoey in there) played between some of the non-beanpot MA schools.
