Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

The Beaver Men have picked up two more verbals from recruits here recently.

Tyler Kirkip, F, Virden Oil Capitals out of the Manitoba Junior League. 6'1", 203 pounds from Virden, MB. This past season, he had a line of 60 GP, 40G-35A-75 Pts and 105 minutes in penalties. In the playoffs, he has played 3 games with 1G-3A-4 Pts and 4 penalty minutes.

Carter Jones, F, Trail Smoke Eaters out of the British Columbia League. 5'9", 165 pounds from Spokane, WA. Looks like he is slated to come to BSU in 2019. This past season, he had a line of 55 GP, 15G-30A-45 Pts and 24 PIM. So far during the playoffs, he has played 2 games with 0G-2A-2 Pts and 5 minutes in penalties.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

Yes, it is realistic.

I think the first step is to get to the WCHA Championship game. That has to happen before talk about being a consistent NCAA team comes up.

The WCHA is a different beast the the old CHA was, so I don't think you can compare the run the Beavers had in that league of six, five or four teams, versus the current WCHA of 10 teams. The odds of making it were just better in the WCHA. Yes, they did make the NCAA that last year in the CHA as an at large bid, but all the others were as tournament champion of the CHA. So that leads me to believe that the Beavers need to become a consistent WCHA Tournament threat first.

The WCHA as a whole has to do a better job out of conference. This year the Beavers and the Mavericks were the only ones with winning records out of league. If the WCHA and the teams want to be taken seriously on the NCAA stage, that is a must to where there is consistent talk of the WCHA having two or more teams in the tournament.

Thanks for the good response. I agree and have just found myself very frustrated with the teams early exits in the playoffs the last few years.

Former Beaver Zach Whitecloud will make his NHL debut Thursday night for Vegas when they play in Edmonton. Good Luck Zack!
