Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

Was attendance down for a reason last night, or does BSU not get many fans normally?

Not sure if anything was going on in the Bemidji area ladt night. But since the realignment, BSU has seeen their attendance drop. Last year they blamed it on the TV coverage of home games and pulled them this year, but that hasn't helped.

As for the game, ugh. You can't play 16 minutes of the third period on the penalty kill and expect to win. The Beavers only gave up one goal in those 16 minutes, but they were gassed fornthe other four minutes, giving up a goal off a faceoff and then an empty netter.

Same two teams tonight!

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

Bemidji averages 3034 a game third in the WCHA behind MT and Mankato. Disappointing to see only a couple of thousand in the seats last night for a playoff game. Beavers will be much more disciplined tonight in a win over MT.

Holy smokes, watched the wcha tv feed from Bemidji last night......I think you guys win the trophy for most advertisements on the cube. ****....Almost unwatchable with all the adverts at every whistle...

Looking forward to a good fast paced game tonight!

Agreed, it is bad. All those ads are the ones that show up on the scoreboard during the game.

The biggest issue I had was how they show the players pictures when they do goal announcements, I get that it's the in arena feed, but you miss a good 30+ seconds of live play on the WCHA.tv broadcast because of it.

Tech uses an in-arena feed, too.

I know, I on't have an issue with the fact it's an in arena feed, the issue is that they cover the video with stuff during live action, that is something Tech does not do.

Yeah, it's a problem. The move from Lakeland TV was short-sighted for very many reasons. The school should've negotiated a better financial arrangement.

Also, Bemidji fans, I love ya: https://twitter.com/weloveuahhockey/status/970399995059998721

Congrats to Kyle Bauman on signing a contract with the AHL's Ontario Reign. Interesting story on Kyle, who is from the Orlando, Florida area. After his last year of junior hockey, he hadn't landed a spot on a college roster, D-I or D-III. He was all set to go to school back home (Central Florida, I believe) when BSU called in August as they had a roster spot open up. Now, four years later, he is moving on to the AHL with a pro contract! Great story!

Congrats to those guys on signing pro contracts! Bemidji State is a great team with a lot of class. Looking forward to watching them again next year.

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

I've been tied up the last couple of days watching the Alexandria Cardinals at the Minnesota State Tournament ( runner up in Class A, took down Hermantown 6-1 in the semis). But there were two more signings.

Leo Fitzgerald signed with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.

Carter Struthers signed with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL.

How do we take the next step as a program? We obviously went through a bad period in the early 2010's and have done a very good job bouncing back from that and building back into a solid program. We have now made the playoffs 4 straight years and hosted three of the last 4 including winning the Macnaughton. The next step to me is to become a consistent NCAA tournament team. We were there before in the late 00's where we made 4 of 6 years. How do we get back there again? Is it realistic to expect that from this program?

Re: Bemidji State Beavers: Defending the MacNaughton 2017-18

How do we take the next step as a program? We obviously went through a bad period in the early 2010's and have done a very good job bouncing back from that and building back into a solid program. We have now made the playoffs 4 straight years and hosted three of the last 4 including winning the Macnaughton. The next step to me is to become a consistent NCAA tournament team. We were there before in the late 00's where we made 4 of 6 years. How do we get back there again? Is it realistic to expect that from this program?

Yes, it is realistic.

I think the first step is to get to the WCHA Championship game. That has to happen before talk about being a consistent NCAA team comes up.

The WCHA is a different beast the the old CHA was, so I don't think you can compare the run the Beavers had in that league of six, five or four teams, versus the current WCHA of 10 teams. The odds of making it were just better in the WCHA. Yes, they did make the NCAA that last year in the CHA as an at large bid, but all the others were as tournament champion of the CHA. So that leads me to believe that the Beavers need to become a consistent WCHA Tournament threat first.

The WCHA as a whole has to do a better job out of conference. This year the Beavers and the Mavericks were the only ones with winning records out of league. If the WCHA and the teams want to be taken seriously on the NCAA stage, that is a must to where there is consistent talk of the WCHA having two or more teams in the tournament.
