Re: Bemidji @ Minnesota - Rodents, Rodents, Everywhere
Anyone have update on Flynn? It took me forever to figure out who was out of the line-up. Hope he's OK, we can ill afford too many more injuries.
Thought the Gophers played pretty well. Also thought Bemidji played pretty well...not supposed to sound like a slam, but they didn't show a ton of raw talent but played a very hard, physical game and showed a lot of "hockey sense"....something the Gophers often seem to lack.
BSU's game is ABC hockey (not an insult, btw):
Play tough
Don't make mistakes, don't be flashy
Counterattack, rather than all out attack
This works for them, due to the players they end up getting, although it might adjust a little when they join the "big boys" of the WCHA (more tv presence, more exposure, etc etc etc).
I mean, it's pretty simple: you attack when you can, and capitalize on opponents' mistakes when they bumrush your zone (which happened a few times tonight against MN, who looked like they went in all-out-attack-mode all night). Get that lead, and hopefully your bread and butter defense can hold 'em.
I see WI in a similar vein, except they employ the trap, and have higher skill players (obviously).
I think the turning point (or for you ESPN TMQ readers, the "game over" point) was the killing of the super-extended BSU powerplay. After that.....they were, dare I say, listless at times. That was a BIG blow to their hopes for a second goal.
Edit: remember the Greatest Show On Turf? The StL Rams? The question was, at the time, how do you stop them? The answer? Punch 'em in the mouth, like the Pats. Basic football. I see the same thing with BSU. They punch the flashy teams square in the mouth, and win.
