Beanpot LXX: Timeless!

...I love how some college hockey fans love to knock something that promotes college hockey lol

FYP and especially applicable to the NCAA bigwigs that tried (unsuccessfully so far) to screw it all up by mandating a skills competition if things stay tied after five mins.

But the GLI doesn't have the same field every year. The whole POINT is the tradition and history. Something permanent that endures. I'm sorry if people don't like the fact that it's "regional and provincial" and if you're not from here you don't care. So go start your own tournament and develop some history and tradition. Don't disparage ours.

I'm not saying Bonstonians shouldn't care. I'm saying stop telling everyone else it's omg zoinks gee whiz the greatest thing to ever happen to ALL of college hockey.

Question for you all - prior to the formation of Hockey East when all four schools were in the ECAC, did these games count in the league standings unlike nowadays when they're considered OOC games?
The ECAC was originally formed as a confederation to make it easier for the Eastern Selection Committe to pick the two eastern teams to the NCAA. There was no league created master schedule; each school was in control of its own schedule. Any game played against another ECAC school counted as an ECAC game, which is why different teams had different numbers of league games played. This lasted through the 1978-79 season, the last which had all teams lumped together. All Beanpot games for those seasons were counted as ECAC games, the consolation game was important for league standings.

Starting with the 1979-80 season the ECAC split into three division, East, West and Ivy, and an effort was made to standardize team league schedules. As part of this Beanpot games were no longer counted as league games, with the exception of of the BU-NU first round game in 1980.

An older gentleman has the best seats in the house for opening night of the Beanpot. As he sits down, a young lady--possibly a young alumna--comes by and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him.

"No," he says, "The seat is empty."

"This is incredible," said the young lady. "Who in their right mind would have a great seat like this for the Beanpot, the biggest sporting event in Boston, and not use it?"

The older gentleman says, wistfully, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Beanpot we haven't been to together since we met as students back in the day."

"Oh," says she. "I'm so sorry to hear that. But couldn't you find someone else--a relative or friend, or even a neighbor--to come here with you?”

The old gent shakes his head and replies, "Nope, they're all at the wake."

And that, boys and girls, is why--win or lose--the Beanpot is something special.

You post this every year and every year I tell you how much I love it. :)

Great night of hockey as always. Excited for NU/Harvard.

Wonder when the last time BU/BC played and it wasn't televised? Gotta be like 25 years right? Maybe Sean would know

Boston people: claim the pot is the "best college hockey showcase in the world."

ECAC/HEA: the only conferences to have ESPN contracts

Beanpot - with exclusively ECAC & HEA teams: not available on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+, ESPN3, The Ocho, etc

Lololol

The Beanpot only really matters to alums and students of the 4 schools and and to folks within the metro area: True.
The Beanpot gets more national TV attention than most other college hockey events: True.
The fans elsewhere are jealous of us: False.
The yearly Beanpot thread on the USCHO forum will include a good portion of posts by people elsewhere spending a lot of time and attention at telling you just how little time and attention they spend on it: also True.

The sweaters in the second semifinal were outstanding. Loved the 70's throwback from BU, almost as much as that crispy 80's Northeastern look.

A few random things...

- I thought Northeastern was going to wear their black jerseys based on the jersey shown at the Beanpot luncheon. I like the red ones much better.
- Given the BU is in the consolation game next week (sob), and the game is at 4:30, and the fact that parking in the garage cost $58, I might actually set foot on the T for the first time since March 12, 2020 next week. The area is so different nowadays and the Government Centre garage is closed, I wasn't sure where else to park.
- Did anyone go to the Dunkin' activation on the concourse? They were sampling iced coffee in little cups. Did I miss the actual Dunkin' concession on the concourse? I feel like they removed it. Anyway, also in the activation area, they had a spin to win wheel. So I spun and landed on "Spin Again." And they wouldn't let me do that and handed me a keychain. Now, I manage activations like this all the time at work. I can understand if there was a line of 75 people behind me waiting to spin and you want to keep it moving, but there was maybe six people total. In the amount of time it took for the conversation as to why I couldn't spin again during which I got no reason, I could have spun again and won something. If you don't want people to spin a second time, remove it from the wheel. [/end rant]
- During the BU/NU warmup when they were going through the rosters, I was trying to see what their methodology was. There was no rhyme or reason. Thought maybe they would do it by class, or even in numerical order. Weird.
- In previous Beanpots, didn't they do the induction of Beanpot Hall of Famers in between the first and second games?
