Beanpot LXIX: Live and In Person!

Split-N

All Hail
Three weeks and counting before the Beanpot Tournament is back at TD Garden. And while the all-time single game attendance record (17,850) will likely not be broken, real people (not cardboard cutouts) will be in the seats. And IMO, that counts as a win in itself.

It doesn’t matter that, with the possible exception of defending champion Northeastern, Beanpot teams are having seasons that, so far, haven’t been up to their usual standards. It also doesn’t matter that BC and Harvard are losing two starters to the Olympics while BU is losing its starting goaltender (all to the USA) while NU may lose its starting goaltender to Canada.

What does matter is that bragging rights among four Division I schools that are almost within walking distance of each other, and the passion, emotion, and tradition that goes with it, are back on the line.

Other than the fact that none of the four teams will even think about dodging a game (see 2021 GLI), all bets are off (as usual).

Update: Confirmed that NU goaltender Devon Levi and BC forward Jack McBain will play for Canada. To recap, BC is down three starters; Harvard two starters, and BU and Northeastern each down starting goaltenders. Also reported that NU Captain Jordan Harris is an alternate for Team USA, which means he may get the call if one of the primary USA defensemen goes down during pre-Olympic training.

Beanpot is up for grabs.

FYI, both Beanpot games are being carried by NHL Network. Also NESN.
Harvard-BU 5 p.m.
Northeastern-BC 8 p.m.

Has the second game EVER started at 8:00pm? Seriously, even with no OT in the first game, the second game doesn't start till 8:30 at the earliest.

Agree that OT is more the rule than the exception in this tournament but 8 p.m. remains the scheduled start. Hoping and praying that none of the games is decided by the loathsome and damnable shootout. :(

I thought Beanpot games had a 20-minute OT, at least in the first round? I thought it was just the Consolation game that now has a shootout. Though I'm probably misremebering. Anyway, they put up 45 minutes on the clock between games so the first game would need to end by 7:15 in order for the 8:00pm start. Which, yeah. A TV game? Doesn't happen. Not sure why I'm harping on it so much. Trying to distract myself I guess. Happy Beanpot Monday y'all!!

Are you sure about the NHL Network? I don't see any mention on NHL.Com. Does the broadcast include livestream?

Beanpot will no longer have multiple OTs. It will be treated like a regular season game. If a game is tied after regulation, there will be 3-on-3, 5-minute OT. If nobody scores, a shootout determines winner/advancing team. Beanpot committee submitted waiver to NCAA but was denied.

This right here immediately makes me lose a lot of interest in the Beanpot. With there being no threat of multiple OT games, ditch the consolation game and add the women's beanpot title game to the 2nd Monday night. Would at least be cool for them to have some fans in the house. I bet more people would filter in to watch the end of that compared to end of consolation game.

No shoot out and no three on three, play to a legit winner. I like the idea of a women's final as the first game on the second night. No one wants to play the consolation game and the women's game would only add interest and attendance, plus I am sure the women would love to skate on Garden ice.

It is Beanpot Lite this year, with every team missing key players.

I personally wouldn't mind the women's Beanpot championship game in place of the consolation game. But don't see it happening. It is about selling tickets and a scheduled game that counts in the power ranks, and don't see any of the four teams or the Garden giving it up.
I'm sure the women would love a Garden date. Start selling out the final on campus locations and that'll push for it happen, especially if the men's tournament attendance continues its decline.

I'll grant you that attendance has been uneven for the first-round games, but the championship games have continued to draw well. Attendance for the 2020 championship was an all-time record. Plus respectable ratings on NESN, NHL Network, and TSN.

Agreed that the women's title game would make a great second-night prelim. Keep the men's consolation and play it at a neutral campus site or maybe even the opener of a Garden tripleheader, outrageous as it might sound.
