BC Women's Hockey '14-'15: #SOAR

Oh by the way, I thought Burt was really really good against UNH. She looked much more confident and solid than the first few games. Shutout, I know, but just going by the eyeball test I mean.

It was a rather tepid offense by UNH and she wasn't tested more than two or three times. Most of UNH's shots came from outside the prime scoring area.

She was tested about as much as she was against Cuse and SLU. The difference was she looked much more confident whenever she was.

Anyone know what's up with Capizzano? Why isn't she playing?

In the SLU game #2 she collided with Carpenter and didn't have another shift. Tough loss although Kenzie Kent looked good with that line.

ICYMI: Kaliya Johnson hasn't dressed in any games this year

Hate to say it, but the magic be all end all BC defenseman just turned the puck over on a blind pass deep in the D zone on a PK, which ultimately resulted in Cornell's game tying goal.

She was just lulling them into overconfidence.

That was a fun game to be at. The Eagles were in top gear from the word go and had great chemistry on the top two lines (Kent / Carpenter / Skarupa and Leary / Trivigno / Sullivan). The top line obviously did a ton of scoring, and Carpenter and Skarupa have phenomenal awareness of each other on the ice, but the second line was almost as impressive with Leary getting her first three points of the season; last year the late-year Leary / Trivigno / Wasylk line was one of our best, and it seems that good things happen with Leary and Trivigno together. They were apart until the UNH game, hope they'll stick together; Sullivan looks great on that line too. The Field / Anastos / Doherty line wasn't as productive; Field is still yet to score this season and in fact managed to be -1 on the game. Capizzano, who was on the first line at the start of this season but was injured for the UNH game, was dressed and played a little in the third period on a line with Grieves and McLean (who you'd think would be a more natural fit for the Field / Anastos line, she's also a right wing). I didn't see Kickham on the ice at all, we seemed to cycle through the other 5 D; Johnson and Wedell didn't dress and though Wedell was there watching I didn't see Johnson. Hope she can get back on the ice soon. Our D were very solid all game, I thought, disrupted attacks before they got too dangerous; best of the D and certainly best of the freshmen D was Toni Ann Miano, who did a great dive on the ice to block a shot on a very dangerous breakaway.

Cornell's D were fast and worked hard but they never really got any serious offensive pressure. They have some questions to answer in net and seemed a little short on F talent. The goaltender interference penalty that gave BC 1:36 of 5-on-3, in which they scored, was completely unnecessary: the play had already moved away from the crease and I don't know what Saulnier was thinking. (On that delayed penalty Katie Burt skated as fast as I've seen a goalie skate to the box, but BC gave the puck up to start the 5-on-3).

Burt is looking pretty solid in goal. She got flustered occasionally but managed to keep the puck out; neither of the goals were particularly her fault. The team defended well in front of her.

None of our kids got more than 3 points in a game where 17 were handed out, shows how balanced the scoring is. And none had a +/- of more than 2.

I would love to see this team, playing the way they played today, up against Minnesota or Wisconsin. Can't wait for the Harvard game after Thanksgiving. My only criticism is that if Skarupa's going to take 9 shots on goal she could try to take fewer of them straight at the goalie.

Watching the game on live video feed, Cornell really struggled with BC's speed. Certainly a tough first game for them. It will be interesting to see what adjustments they make for tomorrows game.

Saulnier lost her balance when she was following the puck into the corner and ended up skidding/pirouetting near the crease and caught Burt's skate.

In light of that play, I was surprised BC's 4th goal was allowed. I've seen that called 2 minutes on the skater in the NHL, so I thought at a minimum, they'd wave the goal off.

Overall, BC was just too fast for Cornell, outside of the Big Red's stars. They looked like a team playing its first game. Interesting to see if they catch up at all tomorrow.

Also was surprised that goal wasn't waved off due to goaltender interference.
