Re: Batman Vs Superman, And Oh Yeah, Suicide Squad: Movies Thread

It was great; you'll love it.

I'm going to finally watch the movie this week, most likely Friday night and I'm super excited for it. "here's a little gangster short in size, a t-shirt levi's are his only disguise" woot!

Crafting A Nation:

Documentary on craft brewers around a nation. Centers on Black Shirt Brewing in CO, but does interview many others including DogfishHead, Sam Adams, Oskar Blues, etc. One thing I found interesting, is that when they touched on Mpls, they interviewed Indeed, Fulton, Harriet, and for a store Four Firkins (movie was released in 2013 or so), AND Mayor Rybak. But no mention of Surly at all. None. They referenced the new taproom laws, but absolutely no mention of the brewery.

Soaked In Bleach:

Documentary that focuses on the Courtney-Love-hired PI that searched for a missing Kurt in the days up to his death and his doubts (among others' doubts) about the suicide conclusion. Very well done, obviously biased towards the murder-theory, but there is some damming evidence, IMO. I've seen other "conspiracy" docs out there regarding this, and this is the most intelligent, thorough, and probably the most neutral regarding facts and sources that I've seen. Well worth the watch.

I watched Soaked In Bleach about a month ago and I too thought it was very well done. It left more questions than answers of course. I'm not going to say the drug dealer killed Kurt or Courtney had him killed because he was set to divorce her...but at the same time I'm open to the idea something else happened.

Color Me Obsessed.

So Saturday was Record Store Day, and though I couldn't really afford to spend some cash, I wanted to at least check out the scene. So I headed down to the big city(Portsmouth, NH) to Bullmoose Records, whose owner is the guy who started Record Store Day. And yeah, I was good, I held back from spending money I don't have. Until I hit the music dvd section. And since with my Bullmoose card, I could get it for half-price, it was mine.

A documentary on The Replacements, my favorite band, and as one of those interviewed says, the best band in the world. No music, no pictures of the band, no clips of them performing, just people who were there at the time sharing stories about the band and what they meant to them. Simply AMAZING documentary, of the band, of that point in time, of the Minn-St. Paul music scene. I say again, just amazing. I've gone through 3+ hours of stuff, and have still to watch the bonus features or listen to the audio commentary.

Now it got me right away, as the opening credits scene uses a flyer from the late great Boston club The Channel, which just coincidentally enough, is the place I first saw The Replacements back in 1986. There''s also a ticket stub from Boston's Opera House, where I saw them on the Don't Tell a Soul tour. And an interview with members of the Boston band The Bristols, who I saw open for Joan Jett, and loved.

I cannot say enough how much I loved this film. If you're a Replacements fan, or even an early 80's music scene fan, a must see.

Hush:

A deaf woman living in a secluded area deals with an intruder. Pretty good suspense/thriller, and a movie that normally wouldn't be in my wheelhouse. I imdb'd it after watching, and due to the nature of the main character, there is only about 15 minutes of dialogue in the whole movie (it's about 85 minutes long). THAT little tidbit is rather impressive, if you ask me, given the quality of the movie. Worth a watch.

Have you read the new book, Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements? The author apparently received quite a bit of cooperation from some of the key band members. I have a good friend who is a pretty big Replacements fan and he can't stop talking about the book. I guess it's about 500 pages with small print, so there must be a fair amount of stuff in there.

I saw something a week or so about that theater schedule, then saw it was a the 1997 versions of the movies, and, well, no thanks.

I saw on Gawker (or one of their sites) that a group of people remastered the original film. I'll admit I downloaded it just so I could have a copy where Han shoots first. (Technically, he's the only one who shoots in the original, but alas...)

They did a fantastic job with it. I'd gladly pay for a copy on blu-ray.

I keep hearing rumors of the ORIGINAL originals eventually being released, but I admit I haven't really searched if it's true or not.

Chi-Raq

Absolutely reDONKulous satire (in a good way) about gang-life in Chicago. The women of Chicago start a movement of withholding sex from their men until there is peace. Given that it's a Spike Lee movie, it does wharrgarble a bit, and strays from the main point, however, the overall message directly calls out the idiocy of gang members' thinking.

Sometimes serious, sometimes gut-busting hilarious in the presentation (Sam L as a narrator of sorts is ZOMG funny), and very well done, and that's saying something considering my overall opinion of Spike Lee's stuff.

If you have time and the desire, there are some very good edits of the prequel trilogy on YouTube. In this "Anti-Cheese Edit" The Phantom Menace is trimmed down to a crisp 1:32 run time. Another person has gone through and done lengthy videos of how the prequels should have been done to make them much, much better. I'd gladly contribute to a Kickstarter fund to get his vision green-lit so Disney could retcon the disasters Lucas made.

Look Who's Back:

Hitler wakes up in present day, at the site of his former bunker. The modern world thinks he's an impersonator/comedian, when he's actually the real Hitler.

Like Chi-Raq, it goes back and forth between serious satire, and being hilarious. Some parts are basically "German Borat," with raw footage that is improvised. I won't spoil it, but there is a certain scene that had me laughing hard enough that I had to pause the movie and catch my breath.

Venus In Fur:

A director meets his match in an actress who tries to convince him that she's perfect for a rather controversial/seductive part in his play.

Excellent movie. It's a play within a movie type setup, and how the actors switch in and out of the "character" is quite impressive. The lines are very blurred, yet obvious. Very well done, and highly recommend.

For those who are fans of the ESPN 30 For 30 movies, a bit of news follow up to the Hillsborough tragedy documented in one of those films.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/26/footb...liverpool-trevor-hicks-jenni-hicks/index.html

While the events of that day are no doubt a tragedy, and may possibly have been prevented or lessened through different actions, I fear hindsight will allow the pendulum to swing back too far and result in a witch hunt of prosecutions that may not be warranted.

On the other hand, I hope they do go back and prosecute the lying sacks of **** who claimed the Liverpool fans were a bunch of drunks in an unruly mob, that they purposely prevented rescue crews from saving lives - in short that they were scum who deserved to die. **** them. Go after the corrupt cops and the piece of dung Tory MP. Sadly they won't be able to prosecute those ******** at The Sun who published and championed that libelous garbage.

Inspired To Ride:

Doc about the Trans-America Bicycle Ride. 4200+ miles, from OR to VA. No support teams, no prize money. It's just to say you did it. Yeah.

Since this is all about the ride/challenge of it, I don't consider the following a spoiler: the winning time was 17 days, 16 hours, and a few minutes.
Really good doc, and those f*ers are insane. I used to cycle, did 200+ in 2 days no problems (charity rides) but this....JFC. Even (basically) the last rider to finish avg'd 70/miles a day for two months straight. That's so on another level.

Definitely a good watch.
