Basketball 2017

Re: Basketball 2017

I love seeing the social media reactions to this. Lots of "Warriors are ruining the league" from the fans of a league who love to idolize the Celtics and Lakers dominating for a decade and the Bulls' two three-peats.

Re: Basketball 2017

If there was one spot where the Warriors were meh, it was center, where it's been more or less a placeholder for the current run. They usually got out-rebounded, partly because their style put the emphasis and getting back on D and winning based on pure number of possessions, but partly because even when they did battle for rebounds they never had the presence down low (other than usually Green). On that level, the Cousins deal, for such a low amount, is amazing. Yeah their might be some personality issues, but I think Couisins will treat it as a rehab that let's him improve his resume by getting a title. Additionally, it might be the injury is worse than expected, so the Warriors were willing to burn the 5.3M on the fact he will get better quicker than other teams assume, and if he does that will make the deal even more ridiculous.

Do BB nerds distinguish 3s from other shots when analyzing offensive rebounds? Rebounds off 3s are a different thing, aren't they, often bouncing far away from the net? That 6'6 wingman has just as good a chance as the tall timber down low. Seems like that would affect stats for a team that puts up a lot of 3s.

No idea on the stats. And that's a good point about a 3-bound being different than a regular rebound, and again it hasn't exactly killed the Warriors given their overall talent and strategy. But as an eyeball test, it did seem to me like they conceded a lot on the boards even during their championship seasons.

That is radical. I’d love to watch it in practice in college or the pros. One season sunset. Try it out.

Probably a pipe dream in the NBA, but I could see it getting a test run for the lulz in the G-league or the All-Star game.

The big downside is no more OT or buzzer beaters. I honestly wouldn't mind giving up OT - NBA OT isn't like the other leagues where the next score either wins outright or has a very good chance to stand as the winner. It's either a 15-5 blowout and kinda anticlimactic, or it's close and turns into the exact foulfest situation we're trying to avoid.

In its stead I'll throw in the "win by 2" rule. Target score is 92, home team has the ball down 91-90. Now THAT'S an ending. And it shouldn't make the game drag on TOO long, because in a deuce situation any 3 point play would end the game. Imagine some poor team putting the defense out deep to stop Steph Curry from dropping a game-ending 3.

Re: Basketball 2017

Initial thought is that you would still see intentional fouling, albeit to a lesser degree:

Target = 75. Team A leads Team B 72-66. What stops Team A from intentionally fouling B so they get the ball back after the FT's? Especially if B is a horrible FT shooting team. I think this would rear its head in NCAA more than the NBA... I think it may even come out even earlier if a team is really bad at FT's...

As an alternative, I would just give the Referees the ability to judge an "intentional" foul within the last 4 min... If deemed to not be a legit attempt at a steal/defensive play, the offended team automatically gets 2 shots, and the ball after. This would at least eliminate the "hug the ball carrier" when he crosses mid court type plays. It would also allow teams to press/play aggressive defense with fouls to give. Downside is that we are asking officials to make judgement calls, which are being eliminated from officiating whenever possible. I don't know how to word this in the rulebook other than the porn definition of "you'll know it when you see it"....
