Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

You can't even spell the guy's name correctly. Best buds my azz.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Consider the timing involved.....Maine dismissed Whitehead on Wednesday, Monty got the Denver offer Friday/Saturday. I'm thinking Monty was in contact with Denver before Whitehead got the ax, I think that interview, vetting process takes more than 2 days. So how could Abbott have stopped that process with a Wednesday phone call?

I'm guessing Abbott didn't wake up Wednesday morning and decide that he would fire Whitehead. Just like you're speculating that Denver and Montgomery have been talking for some time. When you factor in that he admits to having talked to Montgomery a while back...you don't think they talked about the possibility of a coaching change?

But this idea that Abbott could've stopped him from going to Denver by calling him on Wednesday or Thursday doesn't hold water to me.

Do you know for sure that Montgomery to Denver was a done deal when Maine fired Whitehead? I'm not convinced of that. And if it wasn't, you're not doing your job if you don't contact Montgomery. You're telling me one of the all-time greats at Maine wouldn't answer the phone and listen? Of course he would. Anybody would. He would at least weigh his options.

Not for nothing but Whitehead got canned Tuesday 4/9/13. How does that Mahalia Jackson Gospel song go... "Oh Happy Day...!":D

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Dave Quinn has 50 times the coaching resume and 50 times better recruiting results and USA hockey connections and
BU fans were not impressed

Whoa...hold it a minute there, cowboy. I don't know how you think you can get away with your revisionist history, but just about EVERYONE on the BU thread who has been posting about this for the last 3 years listed their "preferences" for the BU coaching position in this order: 1) DAVID QUINN 2) Mike Sullivan 3) anyone else....

I don't know what you have been reading...

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

He had his father in law and I can assure you JM is not Sean Walsh. If you think he was coming in and could do what he did you would be dissapointed

Oh, so now, in addition to having to have played a lot of NHL games, if your father in law is a good coach, that means you will be too.

Got it.

Yep. Everything I've seen from the BU contingent and they're absolutely thrilled about this choice.

It helps that he has his connections on the recruiting side. Funny how father in laws (especially D1 legends)want their son in laws to do well, especially when his daughter is there. Kind of like someone marrying Jerry Yorks daughter, hello!!!!!

Search committee formed for new UMaine ice hockey coach

Orono, Maine — University of Maine Director of Athletics Steve Abbott has announced formation of a seven-member search committee to help identify the new head coach of the UMaine men's ice hockey team.

The search committee will begin work immediately and seek to provide the director of athletics with the names of recommended candidates within the next two months, to be forwarded for a final decision by UMaine President Paul Ferguson.

Robert Corkum was named interim head coach of UMaine men's ice hockey on April 10, replacing Tim Whitehead, who was released from his contract April 9. Corkum, a UMaine alumnus who played on the UMaine hockey team (1985-89) and then 12 years in the NHL, has been an associate head coach with the university's men's ice hockey program since 2008.

“Our aspiration with this coaching search will be to find that individual who can best build upon the significant successes of both Shawn Walsh and Tim Whitehead, and rekindle the collective spirit, energy and support of the entire Black Bear Hockey Nation,” says UMaine President Paul Ferguson.

Dr. George Jacobson, professor emeritus of biology, ecology and climate change, and the university's former NCAA faculty athletic representative, will chair the search committee. Jacobson joined the UMaine faculty in 1979 and serves as the Maine State Climatologist. In addition to his years of research and service to the state, which included his role as a member of the “Faculty Five,” advancing research funding in the State of Maine, Jacobson has played an integral role in UMaine athletics. He has served on numerous search committees for coaches and athletic directors, athletic advisory committees and America East Conference committees.

“Through his participation in numerous head coach searches, and with experience as the NCAA faculty representative, George understands the necessary balance needed in athletics related to competition and student academic success,” says Abbott.

Joining Jacobson on the search committee will be:

Cherie Damon, president and long-time member of Friends of Maine Hockey, recipient of the 2011 Friends of Maine Hockey Volunteer of the Year Award and parent of a former player.

Dr. Nic Erhardt, UMaine assistant professor of management in the Maine Business School, faculty liaison to the men's hockey team, and member of the Athletic Advisory Board. Erhardt played semi-professional hockey in Sweden.

Peter Metcalf, UMaine alumnus (Business, '02), Portland business leader in financial advising and former professional hockey player. Metcalf was a defenseman when the Black Bears went to the 1999 National Championship and a captain of the 2002 team that was national runner-up.

Dr. Richard Powell, UMaine associate professor of political science, and director of the Peter Madigan í81 Congressional Internship Program and the Kenneth Palmer Maine State Legislative Internship Program. Powell has been involved in hockey as a player, coach and administrator for more than 40 years in Michigan and Maine.

Jon Sorenson, UMaine alumnus (Economics, '86), Massachusetts business leader in the energy industry, member of Business and Engineering Advisory Boards, co-chair of Black Bears of Boston, founder of the Boston Executive Club of the University of Maine, and a strong UMaine hockey supporter.

Janine Tremble, UMaine alumna (Merchandising, '86), marketing specialist with Maine Savings and president elect of the Black Bear Board of Advisors.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I take it you are joking. Similar to here I have been one of the few defending

First of all, this board is infinitely more entertaining when Hokydad is on it. Just sayin'

Second of all, most of the "detractors" regarding the Quinn hire are BC fans. Just sayin'

Carry on...

Yeah, Hoky, who are you talking about? I couldn't be more pleased. Even most BC fans think Quinn will be a good coach. The only "detracator" who I can think of is our favorute BC poster carlton, who seems convinced that BU struck out on a couple others before "settling" for Quinn. And you have followed those comments of his by saying Quinn was the one and only one on BU's radar.

BU fans were not impressed(they are wrong, he is a keeper+++).

i think bu fans looked at this as inevitable. it was always going to be quinn. the problem was it should have been some time ago. so once it finally happened instead of "finally! :)" it was "finally "

i hope that makes sense.
because that is what it was.

Exactly right Hoky. Quinn was selected, with Parker's blessing I might add, a long long time ago. Possibly a year ago. carltonbarrett knows that. He's obnoxious but he's not stupid. Look at the BU culture. Jackie is Mr. Wonderful there. He said how it was gonna be for most of his 30+ yr career there. It took 3 days...3 days... after BU lost the HE tourney to UML for them to leak the announcement and 4 days to make it. You think there was a search or a discussion? Duhh!

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Getting back to Maine, "my" local D-3 coach has drawn 3,500 or so per game for a few years now, and has his hat in the ring for the UAA job.

I hope he's applied to Maine, too; he's just like Shawn... He'd run his grandmother over with a Zamboni to win a hockey game.

:D

That brings back fond memories. My dad was a coach and athletic director. Having 4 sons, he used to tell us when we were tikes playing against each other out in the yard... 'I don't care if you're playing against your grandmother. You play to win. Bury her." :) Of course, that also meant we didn't have to feel bad about beating azz on the younguns'. :D

Now there's a whole 'nother generation of family with the same competitive spirit. ;)

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Yes. He's applied at UAA, not anywhere near the Maine radar, but I'd bet that he'd be good for a FF or two at Orono, and more sanctions.

;)
