Lee Goldberg of WCSH has been all over this story today. Posting, without comment, a couple of his tweets from just a few minutes ago:

No, it really doesn't.

Unless Steve spoke to Jim, and told him up front that he (Abbott) didn't think he was in position to do anything more than offer the job to Corkum?

Just saw a new tweet from that Goldwater guy . . . I was hoping that he had a point #3 to clear up this confusion . . . but he was just joking around with Sean Walsh.

Or this. Sorry Steve, I'm more interested in the DU job that I have a good shot at. More money, more resources.

Well, that's possible. I was just answering the question of why Jim would have lied to Larry, who reported that Montgomery said he was never contacted about filling the vacancy.

Even that would be complete hair-splitting by Jim, but in my scenario it would still be technically honest. I think. I'm definitely reaching, here.

He wouldn't have been first choice, or possibly even on the DU radar at the time Abbott allegedly talked to him. It seems likely Seth Appert pointed them towards Jim.

OK, so possibility #3:

Jimmy hat trick flat-out lied about not being approached. Why? Who knows. Maybe he knew DU was moving quickly, and he didn't want news out of Orono to influence DU's search? Which would kind of call into question just how deep his commitment to Maine really was.

Don't flame. I've written enough posts suggesting that Steve Abbott an incompetent arse that I sort of feel compelled to play devil's advocate.

This whole situation just stinks to high heaven. Leave it this AD to take all those good feelings and high expectations that was out there on Tuesday and just pizz it all away.

Well, someone is lying. My money is on Abbott.

But it's possible that Abbott contacted Montgomery, the conversation went badly, and *both* lied about it to cover their arses (JM, to reassure DU??)

I emailed him on Friday to express the disappointment about the quotes from Jimmy saying he was shocked no one had contacted him and the news he was interviewing at Denver. Also mentioned the fact, fair or not, that Corkum was at Timmy's side for 5 mostly sub par seasons.

A shot while later Corkum posts on here. Coincidence? :P
