Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

cause somebody (AHEM!) destroyed the video tape!! :D

--but seriously. what did the ncaa get paid to not have that title removed?? i can't believe they would except a gift of your finest sheep. what else does maine have to pay off a debt that large!?!?!?!
The games that were forfeited were because the university used an ineligible player. We did not use an ineligible player in 92-93

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

When it's going to take, realistically, three to four years to bring the whole thing under control and start to see some of their own recruits start to come into the program...then another year or two to build on that and get solidly back into the national picture. Could it happen faster? Yes. But that is a realistic timeline...IMHO
Might take 3-4 years. Might not. Case in point: UMass-Lowell

2010-11 season 5-25-4 (HE 4-21-2)
Bazin takes over for Blaise McDonald 4/21/11
2011-12 season 24-13-1 (HE 17-9-1)
2012-13 season 28-10-2 (HE 16-9-2) Regular season and HE Tourney Champs

And stay tuned tomorrow at 4:30 as they hopefully dismantle Yale. ESPN 2.

Will Maine have this type of dramatic turnaround? The probabilities are low, but looking at today's college hockey landscape, anything is possible. Take a look at the 4 teams playing tomorrow.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Feels like Christmas tonight... :):):)

Tim was a good-enough guy, but a clueless coach, and needed to go. The 2 million + he grossed at Maine should make his job-transition a breeze.

I wouldn't cite Cindy as a reason to avoid Monty. Jimmy has shown that he can coach a little, and he bleeds Maine blue.

I say give the guy a three-year deal and see what he can do. There is enough talent in Orono already to get the Bears back in the mix, IMO.

M.A.I.N.E....Gooooooo BLUE!

Coaching in the USHL with the full resources of Harvard alums and tehir millions of dollars, advisor/agent connections on and on is not the same as going up against BU/BC etc./ Not even in the same world.
Also zero recruiting rules in juniors, pretty much.
He bleeds blue why? Because he wants to coach there? Safe to say the other 4 or 5 high end canidates do as well.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

Just in case there was any confusion over the motivating factor behind Coach Whitehead's dismissal ...

In $upporting thi$ decision, Director of Athletic$ $teve Abbott added, “Thi$ i$ about the future of our marquee program. $ince 2008, UMaine ha$ experienced declining Hockey Ea$t $ucce$$, $eason ticket $ale$ and overall ticket revenue$, and waning $tudent engagement in men'$ ice hockey. The Pre$ident and I are committed to en$uring that our Men'$ Hockey Program is financially $u$tainable, continue$ to focu$ on developing the $tudent-athlete and i$ known nationally for excellence.”

And capped off by UMaine's transparent-yet-incredibly-naive financial exit strategy ...

Whitehead had one year remaining on a four-year extension of his employment contract negotiated in 2010. In choosing not to pursue an additional extension from discussions with Coach Whitehead, the University will provide up to $195,000 related to one year's salary, plus one month's salary in lieu of notice. President Ferguson will use only privately raised funds from the President's Discretionary Account to meet that obligation and no funds will be reallocated from the current university budget committed to academic programs, faculty, student or operational needs. Abbott ha$ indicated that the Athletic$ Department i$ committed to reimbur$ing the President'$ inve$tment through anticipated revenue$ generated by renewing fan intere$t and increa$ed ticket $ale$.

* Firing the coach with a year left on his contract = "investment"
* "President's Discretionary Account" = retroactive financial aid???? :confused: ;) :p

I gotta admit that, despite the fan uproar that's preceded (and based on AD $teve'$ comments, very clearly precipitated) yesterday's job action, this was a brave decision by UMaine. And I'm a little surprised they didn't "bite the bullet" for one more season, especially with the team's second half turnaround. Especially where it's *only* been six years since Coach Whitehead's program experienced four trips to the FF in a six-year stretch, including two losses in the Finals.

In the meantime, the folks in Durham show no signs of upsetting the applecart, despite Coach Umile now at ten (10) seasons (and counting) past an identical six-year stretch.

Fortune favors the brave. Assuming UMaine likely got the first half of their decision right, it will be interesting to see how Part Two of the decision (the successor) turns out.

" Enjoyed your post.. very well written" Maybe Coach Umile will be the next to get fired?? He has always had a winning record, but has failed when it comes to the Frozen four, ect..

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

winning will do that, not soap box speaches and bs

Corkum is the right guy for the job but would the fan base give him the time needed to pull it off.

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

But would he fire up the fan base? Five years ago he would have, but now? I don't see it.

I agree.

Bob has been associate head coach for the last 5 years, right? Maine made it to the NCAAs once and was one and done after blowing a quick 2 goal lead. The previous season highlight was _almost_ beating BC in the HE final.

Bob has been right there with Timmay over some of the worst Maine hockey we've seen in over 20 years. I think he would probably be an upgrade, but it wouldn't be enough to fire up the fan base.

For what is is worth, someone I know was very connected with the hockey program. Corkum told them "you're talking to the next head coach". This was at least a year ago I think.

I don't know how you can move an associate head coach to head coach when you fired the previous coach to "bring new energy to the program". No matter how qualified he is.

very simple, by saying, "you are hired"

Corkum is the consumate pro and didnt undermine his HC. that is what a good ast coach does. Doesnt mean he agrees with everything and I am sure expressed it behind closed doors but not in public. it is clear from his comments, which were very refreshing, passionate and blunt that he sees a different path for Maine hockey.

Great college player and a very good pro player. He can tell kids in the USHL I know how to play in college and get to the highest levels. he can talk with any nhl guy/coach/gm, Monty for example cant.

He can tell the kids I can show you what it takes to play here and live the dream pro wise

I agree with a lot of this. He actually said in the BDN that there are a lot of things he would do different and would t be afraid to go door to door to drum up support if be had to. I probably would still go with Jimmy as I think he would bring more excitement, but that can come at a cost. Do you think money plays a factor? I would think/hope Corkum is in a good way financially where he played 10+ years in the NHL, but I know that it doesn't always work out that way. Would he take less than other coaches potentially?

Re: Bangor Daily News: Whitehead Fired

I want to know why Mahoney is running a peice on Bob Corkum a day or two after Whitehead is let go. Dont see that this is entirely appropriate right now. What is Corkum Larry's fav to replace Tim ?

Gotta say his association with Whitehead for 5 years where little was done to right the ship doesnt go over well with me anyway. Like Corkum and his drive, but have some unanswered questions about him
