I feel like there's no way UW isn't just sitting on a ton of old broadcast tapes, as they show old footage when honoring old teams/players, and you can look at media guides from the coliseum era on the UW Libraries site. I've found some old stuff from the 2000s, but there's not much straight-up broadcast footage from earlier decades, other than the water bottle game vs UND.

I'm sure UW has a bunch available to watch, you just might have to pay to view it. I am able to watch all of the Gopher's championship games and a number of other games with my Gopher All Access pass. I would imagine UW might have something similar on BadgerSports?

I'm sure they do, but I'll spend my actual money on tickets for this season!

I wasn't how much support would be given by BTN. But looking at the level of saturation...the BTN is supporting the sport quite well. Dan Kelly is also a very good play by play guy.

All six coaches press conferences will be streamed live on BTN.com. Live streaming begins at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT and is available for free through the Big Ten Digital Network. Visit http://video.btn.com for more information.

The Big Ten Network president, Mark Silverman, a former television executive with ABC who grew up in West Haverstraw, N.Y., rooting for the Rangers, said college hockey could do better if viewers knew where to find it. The Friday night doubleheaders will be promoted heavily on the network’s football and basketball broadcasts, Silverman said.

“We’re in an investing phase, not in a moneymaking phase, with Big Ten hockey,” Silverman said. “The hope is, over time, that we can grow the sport so it can pay for itself and hopefully be an overall benefit to the network.

“We think it will bring in new viewers. We think it will help with our ratings. But we’re making a significant investment, and it’s not a short-term investment.”

I found the last paragraph interesting.

If college hockey takes off on television, Minnesota Coach Don Lucia said he hoped two more Big Ten institutions might add the sport.

The Big Ten associate commissioner Jennifer Heppel, who oversees hockey, said she would not rule out adding associate members for hockey alone, as the conference did for Johns Hopkins in lacrosse, though not soon.

“It’s hard to predict the college landscape right now, especially Division I,” she said.

Not a big fan as it has more to do with other sports than hockey. I think they could have shown way more dramatic video of the legacy...such as the Wheeler/Broten goals, Okposo between the legs goal, Wisconsin championship goals and the Mike Legg goal (although I dispute that it ever happened ;)).

Maybe the smart folks at the B1G have done their home work and are confident that this will bring in new viewers...

I kind of like it; it's fun. I love the original promo they've been running, and I saw it during a college football game on ESPN (San Jose State vs Minnesota). It's probably only shown during games involving Big Ten teams, but they're not messing around.

Is the Big Ten Hockey website unusable for anyone else? Always crashing on me. Also, is there anywhere that has something like a composite schedule like the WCHA site has?

The B1G will apparently have a weekly hockey award and hand out a 1st 2nd and 3rd star for top weekly performers.

Gophers forwards Sam Warning and Kyle Rau were named to the first set of Big Ten hockey’s Three Stars of the week.

The new conference will name a first, second, and third star to honor top weekly performers in the conference throughout the season.

Warning was the Second Star after being named MVP of the Ice Breaker Tournament. He scored three points in the tournament opener (one goal, two assists), and scored the game-tying goal in the championship game against New Hampshire.

Rau was the Third Star. He was one of four Gophers named to the Ice Breaker All-Tournament team and collected three points in the opener against Mercyhurst. Rau's goal was the Gophers first of the season and led to his 25th career multi-point game. The forward also had an assist against New Hampshire.

Michigan sophomore forward Andrew Copp earned First Star. He scored five points in weekend wins against Boston College and RIT.

Other Big Ten hockey tidbits:

• The conference tallied a 7-2-0 record the first weekend of the season. Michigan and the Gophers picked up wins against ranked opponents Boston College (previously No. 4) and New Hampshire (previously No. 12).

• Penn State opened Pegula Ice Arena with a 4-1 victory over Army, last Friday. The new venue attracted a standing-room only crowd of 6,370. The building’s first goal was scored by Nate Jensen 3:02 into the game.

• All six conference members will be on the road this weekend. The Gophers are at in-state rival Bemidji State. No. 2-ranked Wisconsin travels to face ranked opponents Boston College and Boston University. No. 5 Michigan travels to No. 13 New Hampshire.

Between New Hampshire, BU and BC (several of which have an L from a B1G team)...I bet the B1G record gets a serious ding this week.

Don't forget, this Hockey East "stand" lasts another week for some of us- after going to New Hampshire, we host BU and UMass-Lowell next weekend at Yost. Man...

Correct, and we host BC for 2 games after this weekend.

Should be interesting to see where we stand.

This may be a dumb question over an inane subject.

But does anyone have a clue how post game handshakes will be done now?

The reason I ask: On a weekend where there are two games between the same opponents at one rink- call it Minnesota at Wisonsin.... If that was a WCHA game, I understand that there would NOT be a post game handshake after game 1, but there would be after game 2. But I know in the CCHA, it happens at the end of both games.

Since it's 2 WHCA, 3 CCHA, and one newbie, I would expect the post game handshakes will happen for both games instead of just the second.

Not that it really matters for a while.
