B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Andy Baggot is reporting that the B1G Hockey schools ARE NOT getting an extra $2 million from BTN.

According to Wisconsin CFO Randy Marnocha, claims that Big Ten hockey schools will get an extra $2 million annually from BTN are false.
— Andy Baggot (@AndyBaggotWSJ) May 6, 2013

Ok but are they getting any additional money?

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

No surprise at all. Whomever floated the original story/rumor didn't back up the claim, nor did they (apparently) have an understanding of how the conference shares TV revenues equally among all member schools.

BTN's hockey coverage will be a "loss-leader" for them. The production costs will out-weigh the advertising revenue brought in. It will, however, provide live content which is what they want. If anything, the annual dividend paid by the BTN to the member schools might go down, due to these increased costs, in 2013-14. Those numbers will, theoretically, increase in 14-15 and beyond once Maryland and New Jersey State enter the Big 10/16 and the cable households of MD, DE, NJ, and southern NY are added to the coffers.

I have been told its not a loss liter. The production costs do not out weigh the ads. Why? It's all about adding original programming and re-airing the BiG brand. There are only so many non revenue sports they can air and re-air before the public notices.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

So you conveniently don't care about football but you're all about the Director's Cup standings?
w00t Director's Cup! Hey, we should talk about B1G softball too. Michigan claimed their 6th B1G season championship in a row this season (and has more B1G championships than all of the other schools......combined).

...BTN's hockey coverage will be a "loss-leader" for them. The production costs will out-weigh the advertising revenue brought in...
What production costs? They send a couple of camera guys and a girl to interview people. The play by play guys stay in studio. They do everything they can to keep the production costs low. Heck, they don't even bother to learn the names of the teams or find clips for the opening that have the teams involved in that game.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Well, this was faster than anticipated:

Big Ten Hockey ‏@B1GHockey 21m

Watch for the 2013-14 @B1GHockey Conference Schedule to come out later today.

EDIT: Has now been deleted. Strange.
EDIT 2: New tweet says last tweet was a mistake, schedule will come out tomorrow.

I got the hang of this.

On Wisconsin

I just want to say thank you to Badger Barry and the rest of the cheeseheads for killing the CHS (at which they really sucked at) and for being the genesis of this whole BTHC thingy. Now we can just blame them for this infestation of football and softball talk in a hockey website. :D

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

The conference schedule is out (with 3 series not quite set completely).

Addition: Looking at the conference schedule as a whole, it looks like they did a pretty good job sticking to Friday/Saturday games, despite all the fear people had going in. There will be no more than 3 Thursday games, 2 Sunday games, and 3 Monday games throughout the whole conference. (There could be even less.)

Dog day afternoon trivia: Which B1G hockey team has the best winning percentage?

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Oh, i'll have to try to get tickets to the January Minnesota @ Penn State series. I'd imagine those will be tough to get since its PSU's first season in conference play.
