B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

This aired tonight during Alaska-Anchorage v. Minnesota on BTN. I must say, it's an excellent promo.

Hard to believe that we're nine short months away from college hockey's apocalypse and simultaneous rebirth.

Sure but what really bothers me no pre-game broadcast. If they don't do it I am going to be really bugged.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

I think we've talked about this before, but with the drop to 20 conference games, that opens up a lot more non-con games. I think I heard UM and MTU are going to be playing, but I haven't heard anything regarding MSU's schedule.

Michigan will be making a road trip to houghton, a road game at RIT for their homecoming game and Denver in the GLI Semifinals.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

The biggest hindrance to Northwestern getting a hockey team is that Northwestern is Northwestern. Chicago may love their hockey and the sport may be growing in Illinois, but Northwestern just does not have a fan base. The last few years in football have been their best in over a decade yet the only time they sellout games are when playing OSU/UM/MSU/UNL and maybe a couple others when the visiting fans fill the seats.

I suppose it could happen, but for right now I'd put NU behind Nebraska and Illinois as most likely.

Speaking of which, ironically, Northwestern hosts Nebraska this Friday night in Evanston at the Robert Crown Center in the first round of the Big 10 hockey tournament (of all the non D-1 teams) sans two, that backed out. One of which was Illinois, I believe.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Decided to come up with my own standings that have no merit for the future of the conference, but wanted to post anyway. This is the Big Ten Standings using games played between Big Ten teams. Didn't they do something like this in the 60s or 70s as an unofficial title?

1. PSU 1-0-0 1.000
2. MIN 3-0-1 .875
3. OSU 2-1-0 .667
4. UM 2-1-0 .667
6. UW 0-1-1 .250
6. MSU 1-6-0 .143

Games left:
PSU (4): at MSU (2) and at WIS (2)
MIN (2): at WIS (1) and Chicago WIS (1)
OSU (2): vs UM (2)
UM (4): vs MSU (1), Detroit MSU (1) and at OSU (2)
UW (4): vs PSU (2), vs MIN (1) and Chicago MIN (1)
MSU (4): vs PSU (2), at UM (1) and Detroit UM (1)

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Unless Wisconsin fails to even get a tie in 4 tries against PSU or Minnesota, MSU has cemented itself in the basement for this season, unless they play UM or OSU in the CCHA playoffs and pick up some W's.

1. MIN 3-0-1 .875
2. UM 4-1-0 .800
3. PSU 2-1-0 .667
3. OSU 2-1-0 .667
5. UW 0-1-1 .250
6. MSU 2-9-0 .181

Games left:
MIN (2): at WIS (1) and Chicago WIS (1)
UM (2): at OSU (2)
PSU (2): at UW (2)
OSU (2): vs UM (2)

MSU hockey: Move to Big Ten hockey league will shake up sport

It's a pretty decent read. Some of it is pretty blatant cheerleading for the Big Ten brand that will likely offend a few. The major topics covered are branding capabilities of the Big Ten, comments on splitting from previous leagues, the Big Ten tournament, and updated revenue / cost info. Not really new info, but a few interesting highlights:

On expansion:
Berenson said six teams is a sustainable number for the Big Ten, but Eaves expressed hope that more conference schools would add hockey and that there are some exploring the possibility.

Ooh, this one will likely get a few comments. Thought to be fair, it's the author's comment and no one from the Big 10.
To Red Berenson, the concept of Big Ten hockey hearkens back to a simpler time in hockey history.

“They had the Original Six in the NHL for 25 years,” the longtime Michigan coach said.

College hockey now has its own version, and Michigan State and the other five puck-packing Big Ten schools are hoping to make an even larger impact on the sport.

Financial info:
Total revenues/total expenses (operating expenses)

MSU $1,920,645 / $3,052,506 ($819,145)

Michigan $2,866,947 / $2,984,366 ($799,973)

Ohio State $1,200,870 / $2,735,781 ($437,047)

Minnesota $7,067,373 / $2,194,858 ($666,960)

Wisconsin $6,721,234 / $5,541,827 ($933,506)

Penn State na / na*

BIG TEN TOTALS: $19,777,069 / $16,508,338

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Interesting look at the expenses. At first I figured UW's were so high because they had to convert from ice back to basketball all the time, but then I remembered OSU has to do that too, yet they're spending about 2.5MM less a year. Could just be a simple accounting reason though. I know MSU basketball doesn't look like it makes as much as it does because the athletic department technically "rents" the Breslin Center from the university for games.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

2/17 standings

Michigan takes the lead, but also have to go into Columbus next week in the final week of the Big Ten season as PSU travels to Madison. The top 4 teams all have a shot at the title still.

1. UM 4-1-0 .800
2. MIN 4-1-1 .750
3. PSU 2-1-0 .667
3. OSU 2-1-0 .667
5. UW 1-2-1 .375
6. MSU 2-9-0 .181

Games left:
UM (2): at OSU (2)
PSU (2): at UW (2)
OSU (2): vs UM (2)
UW (2): vs PSU (2)

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Barring any playoff matchups, these will be the final standings for the unofficial Big Ten title. Despite a poor overall record, Michigan takes the title. However, a poor SOS helped as all their Big Ten games came against the bottom two teams.

1. UM 6-1-0 .857 (12-18-2)
2. MIN 4-1-1 .750 (21-6-5)
3. PSU 3-2-0 .600 (13-14-0)
4. UW 2-3-1 .417 (14-10-7)
5. OSU 2-3-0 .400 (13-14-7)
6. MSU 2-9-0 .181 (10-21-3)

Sadly, word is it will be highly predicatd by the bb schedule, so who knows.

So are we going to see some Sunday/Monday Series? Another question is are they going to wait until after Football season to play all the conference games?

I have been told non conference games will be the traditional Friday, Saturday setup but conference games likely will be different. IMO, it will take a few years to get all the kinks worked about before the Big Ten gets their act together. I fully expect many fans complaining, especially Minnesota fans. It will be interesting.
