Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

This Big Ten thing is looking like a real Power Conference! Only one team, Minnesota, is over .500. The rest of the league is a combined 28-44-15. Don't blame Penn State. They are 3 under against D-I competition, just like Michigan and Wisconsin. Michigan State is 6 under and Ohio State, 1 under. What's amazing is that these schools are among the biggest budgeted, best attended, most historic and most prestigious institutions in college hockey, yet they are struggling against the Ferris States, Minnesota Makatos and Northern Michigans of the hockey world. Yep. Big Time there!

Their plan all along has been to play with footballs and brooms.

Somehow, Davy lost his paddle and is stuck on the island of misfit programs and is bitter about it. Tsk. :o

No bitterness at all. Actually, I'm one of those who thinks it will be better for the "mid-majors" of college hockey and improve their chances of making the Sweet 16. The misfits are the big money, big name programs that can't win.

Wishful thinking. Michigan is having their first bad season in 22 years. And they'll still find a way to make the tournament.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

No need to fix with "this season." Ohio State, under .500 five of the last seven seasons (including this one), Michigan State, under .500 overall since winning it all in 07. Wisconsin, under .500 in 3 of 6 seasons since they last won the NCAA, Minnesota was great last year and looks better this year, but for the previous 4 years, they were barely a .500 team and the keyboard rattlers were calling for his head. Only Michigan has been a consistent winner in recent history.

Everyone knew once the news came last July, the B1en was going to be the third best conference, if that.

No, I think you are bitter, like your half brothers from UNO were. Bitter at the CCHA for "allowing" MSU and Michigan to dictate league matters. Bitter about how the CCHA markets and promotes only the "big money schools". Bitter about how television hardly seems to make its way to the "mid major" campuses. Bitter how the USCHO writer (who was first accused of being an OSU poser, now a suck up to MSU and Michigan) only details stories about the anchor schools. I have seen it, read it and have been on this site for over 15 years to laugh at it. There isn't one thing that you can disprove about this opinion.

Aside from your blind hatred, you should check your facts about the B1G Ten teams record in the past 15 or so years (Aside from Michigan's NCAA tourney streak).
Minnesota has won multiple titles and has been a consistent WCHA conference champion. Wisconsin had a good stretch a few years back and won a title. MSU has won a title in the past five seasons, and, for most of the 15 year period I speak to, has been competitive nationally . Ohio State can't claim a national title, but has won the CCHA tournament title and went to the Frozen Four, albeit in 1998. Michigan... well two titles since 1996 and a recent NC runner up. Multiple Frozen Four appearances, CCHA titles. Frankly, you don't know what you are talking about- trying to use one season as a benchmark against years of consistent national competitiveness.

Your 'big money" argument is the seed for your discontent, because your program and others like your program scream about the unfair advantages that large schools possess. Funny, that doesn't seem to bother programs like BU, North Dakota, Denver, Cornell and other prominent D1 hockey programs that are at the same fiscal disadvantage.

Frankly, I'd be careful about playing that card. NMU has been a solid contributor to the CCHA and the WCHA, but hasn't had any program success NOT because of the disparity between they and the "big" programs, but because of their own execution. They have had similar talent to other teams that found a way to be successful and were not- something that the MSU's and Michigans of college hockey will never be sympathetic about.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

As an outsider with no dog in the fight I find it curious that the five Big Ten schools have encouraged Penn St. to keep their program at the club level for the past 15-20 years to create an opportunity for more of them to make the tourney field year in and year out. Usually at least three and often four of
them would qualify as long as they didn't have to bang heads with each other. Now that only Minnesota
is good enough to make it they want Penn St. to move up to varsity status so they have a chance to get more than one team into the tournament.

PS Sorry about the 15-20 year comment, I forgot that PSU hasn't been amember of the Big Ten that long. But you get my drift.

I haven't read or heard anything that suggests this. Minnesota strongly resisted leaving the WCHA because the program's history with the conference, but think they were indifferent as to whether or not PSU elevated their program. And they were the only B1G school that strongly resisted moving to the B1G from what I've read. In fact, I think schools like OSU and MSU probably longed for the day when another B1G school added hockey so that they could form a B1G hockey conference. Those programs weren't exactly raking in $$ with their hockey programs. Especially OSU, whose program has been hemoragging money.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

I'm just curious what Tweet is smokin. That was the most ridiculous pile of crap I've read in quite a while here.
