B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

Oh, we'll just know. A disruption in the time space continuum.

This will actually be maybe the only time where Dubbie is useful. Sicking him on the Wolverine fans is what he's been groomed for. It's his destiny.

Like I said... "CAN'T WAIT!"

Yes, the force is strong with that one.

Should be entertaining...

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

So you're implying winning the GLI is a bigger accomplishment than the frozen 4 birth? Wow... just wow. Maybe I should have realized that based on your sig. I can't wait until that first game where you and JDubbs go at it.

You're right. It's all the refs fault. They should be locked out and replaced. We've got a bunch of fired squirt refs that would be perfect.

Go watch the games. 2010, waved off in overtime. 2011 NC game, waved off which would have been the deciding goal and last year which would have blown the game open 2 minutes in. Anyone who can't see that is delusional.

No I'm not implying that a GLI is bigger. But when you beat the national champion's *** like Michigan did, it's something to be proud of. GLIs are expected here. Michigan has won 2 straight and 3 out of the last 4. Those are just consolation prizes really. Always nice to beat the dbags to the northeast in OT in the title game too.

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

I gotta say that championships have a limited amount of time to be relevant to the current program. I mean, Cubs fans still point to 1906 or 08, or whenever their one title was. Seriously? No one is still alive who remembers anything about that team.

Same thing for my Packers. The titles in the 30s and 40s... Cool history and all that, but an awfully long time ago. Even the first two Super Bowls are ancient history although my 72 year old father at least remembers them.

In terms of hockey titles, what's really relevant today? I think we can all agree that 1965 would be the perfect point to go back to. Anything further back would be a point where almost none of us were even alive.

Since we all agree with that premise, titles since 1965 look like this:

Wisconsin 6, Minnesota 5, MSU 3 and Michigan 2.

I mean, good job Michigan. You got yourself a couple. Better than Ohio State at least.

So in the majority of our lifetimes, MSU has at least tied Michigan. Of course, in our lifetimes, Wisconsin and Minnesota are by far the class of the "Big Ten" hockey programs.

Thoughts?

I knew this was going to come. Just a matter of time before people start excluding certain points in history because it wasn't favorable to their team. I also find it funny how the year you put just happens to be after Michigan won their 7th National Championship. :)

If we play that game, why don't we go back to 1991 and see who has been the best program? That's really recent. Michigan is the undisputed #1, 22 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, 2 NCAA Championships, 22 straight 20+ win seasons.

I know we're ripping in the ugly helments here but I can't believe this is coming from a WI fan. Even mentioning the old Super Bowls like that may get you excommunicated from the state, so I'd be careful. :)

Wait, weren't you the same guy trying to exclude from this discussion the long portion of history where Michigan made only ONE tourney as ancient history?

Hmmm

Re: B1G Hockey: The Countdown Begins

And let's look at the format of this conference. There will be a 20 game schedule, each team plays each other in home and home series.

Playoffs in 2014 and 2016 will be at the Xcel Energy Center :( (bad mojo in that building for me). And 2015 and 2017 will be at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, or if New Olympia Stadium is done in time it'll be there.

I think that is a pretty nice regular season schedule and leaves room for a hell of a lot of non-conference. Which could be a good and bad thing.

Ok let's use 1991, if NC's are the true measure of success with these top programs Michigan would not be the undisputed #1.

Nope, I mentioned that Michigan was down then and anyone who only looks at history from 1965-1990 (which is a stupid way to look at it) isn't going to find much since Hockey was the #4 sport here until Red got it rolling in '91. I look at ALL of the teams history. I don't hide anything. Not the Giordano days, not anything.

In all seriousness, I think the history of the Packers is great, but the only personal connection to titles I have is 1996 & 2010. I actually revere the teams from the early 80s more than the 60s coz I lived and died (mostly died) with those early 80s teams. Lynn Dickey, James Lofton, John Jefferson, Paul Coffman... If only our defense weren't all snorting coke every night, oh yeah, and had talent.

2 for Michigan, 2 for minnesota, 1 for wisconsin and 1 for state. Want the tie-breaker? Tournament appearances or Frozen Four appearances. Take your pick because Michigan dominates both categories. :)

I'll give you this. Michigan is the undisputed leader in losing it's recruits to the CHL :)

#9 overall in the NHL draft Jacob Trouba laughs at you.

Hmm... sounds like they have trouble winning the big one when it counts. Can we dub them the Maize Chokers? :p

Let's go back to the year 2000 shall we and see who has been the best... let's see Minnesota 2 Bucky 1 Michigan State 1 Michigan 0

Oh and the Gophers have 33 NCAA tourney appearances and Michigan has 35, we're catching up watch your backs. :)

Michigan won't be missing the tournament any time soon. Minnesota should be happy they made one in the last 4 years.

Just like you guys the past several years, they weren't going to win that title anyway.

No, Michigan has not been the #1 overall seed the last 3 years and lose to a vastly inferior team. Only instance was cornell and that's a rival, and Michigan was hosed by the refs having a goal waved off that would've decided it.

Minnesota wasn't the #1 overall seed that year.
