B1G Championship in Detroit

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

pgb, those numbers you speculated wouldn't be that much different than the attendance in St Paul last year.

I don't remember last year, but there is simply TOO MUCH hockey going around here right now. This weekend the Twin Cities will be host to:

1. The WCHA Final Five at the Xcel
2. The NCHC Frozen Faceoff at the Target Center
3. The NCAA Women's Frozen Four at Ridder Arena (sold out)

Just too much all at once, and with most men's college hockey fans in the Twin Cities tuned into BTN to watch their local Gopher team play in the B1G Championship on TV, attendance at the Xcel and Target Center will really suffer.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

So there's actual hockey to be played, scheduled for tomorrow.

Anyone want to talk hockey, or should we continue the locaiton debate?

Or both.

I'm hoping that we can pull our heads out by tomorrow, and Wisconsin it just wanting to get this over with.

Somewhat suspect that PSU will beat OSU, even though the teams were kind of headed in opposite directions last weekend. Not that it means anything.

Last weekend, I was borderline going, but my wife decided that we are going, regardless. So I'm looking forward to it. Hoping to see a B1G table where we can provide feedback.

Suggest that they do a better job of keeping their website up-to-date, specifically to fill in the teams on the Tournament Schedule and Tournament Bracket pages!

Would your wife like another husband?:o If I even mention hockey my wife glazes over.
While it is true Wisconsin is pretty down, don't sleep on ( or with ) them. I highly doubt your squad will, but if somehow they win twice and we win once.........shudder........I just don't want to see them again this year, okay?

This is why your wife is awesome. :)

I'm surprised to hear that. I knew there were lots of no-shows, in large part because the Gophers were one and done. But I would have thought the tickets sold number would have been higher. I suppose it's the same problem that we've always had with conference playoffs. They're not part of the season ticket package, so even some of the best season ticket holders opt to keep the wallet closed.

Could be that my guesstimate for Columbus is too high for the same reason. If you subtract 500 sales from each group of regulars, maybe that total local crowd would be more like 2,200. Then if we want to be a little more pessimistic about the number visiting fans, we could knock off another 500 sales. Then your overall total would be 3,500. Could very well be a more realistic number.

It was not my intention to argue that Columbus could match St. Paul! My thought was to look at the best realistic scenario, and to suggest that the number of fans who would attend here wasn't enough to justify sending us the tournament. Your comment is a reminder that this event needs a period of time to establish a following, regardless of where it is held.

But you gotta know that attendance in St Paul would beat that of Columbus.
Well, I'd certainly assume so. The hockey community in MN is vastly larger than in Central Ohio.

I've gotten the gf to get into college hockey, somehow. She's big into baseball, like really loves it. It's my favorite sport but sometimes she'll be talking about roster deals and I don't even know who the players are. Hockey? Not really her thing at first. One of the first times we hung out we were watching the Wings and she called it the blue zone. *doh*

This year she's gone to five or six games with me, forced me to give her an ear bud while I radio streamed the MSU-UM game on my phone on a road trip, texting me while watching games on TV, and fully planned on cancelling other plans before they got moved to go to the BTT. She doesn't have the game completely down yet, I still have to explain icing to her or how players know when to change, but it's fun to see a college hockey fan growing, especially since I've failed to convert other friends. They like going to the games but would much rather pay their sub-NHL attention to the Griffins for Wings prospects.

I'd predict these winners:

PSU
UMI

Semis:
MSU
UMN

Final:
MSU (OT)

I'd take that! :)

That Michigan game scares me more than anything. They've controlled the ice in all but one game this year against us, and Hildebrand isn't going to have the performance of his life two games in a row. For some reason we play really flat or really strong against you guys, but Michigan always has us with our backs against the wall.

You must be one smooth talker ( the girl sounds to be pretty cool , too ). I don't stand a chance with the one I've got. Oh well. At least my 9 year old son digs it.

One of our first dates was to a hockey game, and since I played IM with the company I work for- she knew how much I liked it. She was good to getting season tickets the next season- and we had two seasons while we were dating, then married ever since.

Not sure why she took to hockey- there was NO snow nor even cool weather where she came from, and the ice appeared at places well after we were married. But she was always a UM atheletic fan- going to football and BB game while she was in school. And it's a whole lot more comfortable to sit in Yost than many game at the Big House.

We've been going to FF's for a while now, too.

So you need to work on her a little. You go to Spartan Baseball games and she comes to hockey games, done deal.

(yea, she's awesome :) )

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

The lack of commitment by OSU to seriously back the program for years and years has caused a stunted dedicated fan base for OSU hockey.
The greedy bastar*s pis*ed off a lot of people for years by kicking the team out of their arena come playoff time to host the State high school wrestling tournament because of the money it brought in. How is THAT for being seriously committed to taking care of your program?
They have in the past 5 years started to make a better effort with the program starting by when they went to hire Osieki they increased the base pay from about 100 grand a year to the 225-250 range so they could get a half decent coach.
Rohlik is a very good coach but it will just take time - and winning to get people's interest up.
I've been around the program since it's official beginning back in 1963 but I'm getting too old myself to travel long distances.

Spot on, HockeyBuckeye!

I'll predict Ohio State goes at least past Penn State. We split with them early in the season and then swept them in Columbus a couple weeks ago.
I'm not predicting how far Ohio State will go beyond the first round but they do seem to be peaking a bit now with seven wins in the last ten games (if you count a shootout as a win).

No one giving Ohio state a chance tomorrow I like it.

I've always maintained that hockey is a sport where if you give at least a little bit of effort to care about then it will click with you eventually. Maybe I am biased, though.

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

My ex-fiancee attended last years B1G Tourney. NOT a sports girl. This was actually her first hockey game ever. The following did happen:

"Oh my God! They (Gophers) are playing like sh*! This sucks! Wait, why do I care?! Oh my God, what is happening to me?! I don't care about sports! This is awesome! What the hell?! I love this!"

She just never was properly introduced into a sports fan's world. :)

Re: B1G Championship in Detroit

My ex-fiancee...
LOL, I have a totally different situation. My wife is a SPORTS NUT, having worked in the U of M's athletic department for many years. Her favorite TV channels are ESPN and ESPN2! But hockey's not her favorite sport, which goes to show that nobody's perfect. ;) But that does leave me one sport that I know a lot more about than she does when we go to parties and family get-togethers, so I'm not completely put to shame. :o

If I met a woman that is more sports knowledgeable than me, it wouldn't bother me in the least. :)
