I believe the playoff format for Atlantic Hockey only includes 8 teams this year...

1st weekend:
#8?? versus #1 RIT
#7?? versus #2 (Sacred Heart or AIC)??
#6?? versus #3 (Sacred Heart or AIC or Holy Cross)??
#5?? versus #4 (AIC, Holy Cross, Army, Canisius, Niagara, Mercyhurst)

Congratulations to RIT. They have locked up the 2022-2023 regular season title.

Sacred Heart and AIC will battle it out for 2nd place this weekend. No matter what, Sacred Heart can end up not lower than 3rd place. AIC can fall not lower than 4th place. So, each of them have locked up a home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. It is just a matter of which position they will be in.

Holy Cross through Mercyhurst all have a chance. Bentley and, the surprise back end of the league, Air Force, are now officially eliminated from the playoffs.

Holy Cross and Canisius have a battle on their hands...Holy Cross can guarantee home ice with 2 wins this weekend. They are the only team to completely control their own destiny to get that last spot. And they can actually get third if AIC loses both games and they win both.

Canisius has a chance for home ice with 2 wins over Holy Cross, but they would need additional losses from Army.

Army has a chance at home ice if they win both of their games against Bentley and Holy Cross and Canisius split. If either of them sweep, then Army will have to travel.

Niagara needs a whole lot of help. They need to:
Win both of their games against Mercyhurst
Holy Cross and Canisius need to split
Army to lose at least one of their games

Mercyhurst needs help:
Win both games against Niagara
Canisius needs to win both of their games against Holy Cross
Army needs to lose at least 1 game

I think I have this right, but corrections are welcome, as always.

I don't believe any of these teams will rest players in the last weekend. RIT is the only team that could really benefit from that, and that week off could be more of a detriment than a boost.

Holy Cross can end up no lower than 7th? So, they avoid RIT in the first round.

Army, Canisius, Niagara, and Mercyhurst all have the possibility of ending up in 8th and facing RIT.

What kind of difficulty has RIT run into, however, losing 5 for their last 7?

Or is this a strategic saving a players for a big push into the conference championship and then the sweet sixteen beyond?

Had it wrong...Mercyhurst cannot make it to 4th place, no matter what:

  • Notes
  • ^ means the team will finish better than this playoff spot
  • X means the team cannot win this playoff spot
  • 50% - probability the team will win this playoff spot - green number indicates the team controls its destiny for this spot
  • 50% - probability the team will win this playoff spot - red number indicates the team does not control its destiny for this spot
  • Table Sorting Method
  • * denotes first round home field advantage in the post season conference tournament

Reviewing everything, 4th place is really up for grabs:

any of these teams could easily split their series or win both or lose both. Since there is only 4 points separating positions 4 through 8, anybody could get it, except for Mercyhurst.

But now, I am just being redundant and repetitive and just saying the same thing over and over again.

RIT's PP has been abysmal since the turn of the year. They got 3 PPGs on Friday night against Bentley, but were like 0 for 42 on PPs before that...One of the RIT radio broadcasters did the math that RIT was averaging 1 PPG/game in the first half.4 of the 5 loses since January have been 1 goal games...

Thanks for the info. I was finding it very surprising the way the team was dropping extra points through the remainder of the year. It ultimately did not make a difference for conference play and seeding, but could make a significant difference for at-large bids? Atlantic Hockey will probably not get an at-large bid now, but when there was a strong RIT team, we had the opportunity for a conference championship and an at-large. I always want to see the conference get more opportunity.

Yea, RIT was dancing around 14 or 15 in pairwise at peak, I believe, but would have had to go virtually undefeated to stay there and get an at large (losing late in the tournament). They are now sitting at 22, and well out of at-large chances.

The rate at which they were getting conference points and power play goals in the first half of the season was unsustainable, but I certainly didn't expect the slide they had, especially with relatively no one out with injuries.

Agreed. When the other nine AHA teams rank 33, 36, 40, 48, 49, 53, 54(2), and 56, RIT’s 4-4-0 OOC record is not going to cut it, although if RIT had swept rather than been swept by Penn State, I think that would have helped.

OUR FINAL RESULTS ARE IN...

OUR WINNER IS...

Last Year Results with a score of 44.

Our first runner-up and actual live person...so the person who wins their name on next year's contest is...

TalonsUpPuckDown with a score of 72!

Snively65 was right on their heels with a 76.

Coaches Poll comes in 4th place with an 82.

And after leading a good portion of the year, Earl_Leatherland, dives all the way down to 5th place!

Press comes in 6th. Random Number in 7th. Alphabetical in 8th.

Congratulations, TUPD! You make take your imagination skate around the fictitious rink with the non-existent AHPTSC Cup above your head listening to the phantom screams of the crowd!

HOT DAMN TAMALE, BABY! I cannot believe I came from being behind most of the year and won by coming in second -- what a contest! Phantom announcer, please cue "We are the Champions!" while I take my phantom skate.

TUPD works. Yeah, let's go with that. I assume Last Year's Results will be back to defend their first place title. Game on, biotch.

Edit: I enjoy this contest. Easy to play, good banter throughout the season.
