Any Potential new DIII Programs and the future of the Northeast 10 DII teams?

Re: Any Potential new DIII Programs and the future of the Northeast 10 DII teams?

BTW, folks. No more play-ups. They are deader than the Prezidential Three's title hopes....

I think that is a very wrong headed concept - why not let a small school aspire to compete with the big dogs if they wish. It's all about the branding - can you imagine how bad the NCAA would look if one of the play ups won a national title :D. It would be even worse if the play up team were a DIII team. Oh the humanity of it all...( :D )

Da loophole....(Actually it's all legal)
1. Legislate a D-I/II National Collegiate mens ice hockey championship.
2. Move entire athletic program to D-II.

What's the waiting period to move to DII these days - isn't it 5-7 years?

Does this help the current D-I hockey teams any? or is there any reason why they would want to make it a National Collegiate championship rather than what they have now.

A lot of D-I ice hockey is made up of D-II play-ups. What a D-I/II NCC would allow is the formation of D-II leagues that would cut costs and not have, for example, a Lake State trying to compete with BCS Notre Dame. I foresee the day where D-I college hockey will look a like D-I basketball -- power conferences, mid majors, and the rest. Wherever you are in the landscape, you can find a conference that fits your budget.

It's 7 years to cycle through D-II on your way to D-I. If you're just going from D-III to D-II, you have an X period to ensure compliance, but after year 2, you should be good to go for the championships.

If Clarkson University of Liberal Arts (to take a fictional school) wanted to reclassify from D-III to D-II, they really have to make sure it fits the mission of the entire athletic department and the school, not just one athletic team. So, do I really see anybody reclassifying up? No. The NCAA is putting enough roadblocks in place to make sure a college stays in its place.

Just as an aside. If there are midmajor conferences, are there lowmajor conferences. Isn't midmajor really just a wordy way of saying minor?

As for what I bolded, that's how the NCAA thinks - keep the little guys in their place - upward mobility is not to be encouraged.

I smell a Title IX lawsuit coming from the RIT women...
BUT if the moratorium is up, and they get the application in prior to 8/1/11, then the new by-law has no effect.

Alternatively, they could return the mens team to the days of yesteryear.

Money drives the NCAA. To say otherwise is being naive.

I didn't pick up on the loophole.

That's not going to happen.

Did anything come out of the Florida Coaches convention last week about the DII's being able to play and count towards DIII?

I'm sure all Elmira fans would enjoy that. :D

IMO, the coaches have no say. This one is on the Presidents' desks and they have to poop or get off the pot.
