Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Donovan and Zucker made the cut to the 24-man roster. Two more players will be cut after Tuesday's exhibition against the Czechs to form the 22-man roster.

I would guess that both are locks for the team after watching last nights game.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I would like to get together with people and catch up on what I've missed this year while I'm in Denver, which will be from tomorrow until New Year's. I'm thinking sometime this coming weekend. Email me or post if you're interested and I'll figure something out that will work for people.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Nice comments from Brad Schlossman from Grand Forks:
Jason Zucker may have earned himself a roster spot tonight. If not, I'm sure he's getting a closer look. I thought he was great in Fargo at the U18 tournament last spring and he was making things happen again tonight. He rang one off the post and scored one against the Sioux. He's going to be a very good player for the Pioneers.

With Cam Fowler, Matt Donovan and David Warsofsky, the Americans have three pretty crafty guys on the blue line, who could help the team's power-play unit. I think those three make the squad (not really going out on a limb there).

No official confirmation, but it looks like DU has a new recruit Dan Olszewski from the NAHL.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Perfect! Haha yeah it was Dave. I knew he had a 4 letter first name but my memory was a little iffy due to several libations. Here is the play by play of the confrontation:

So, I'm sitting in my seat before the game and when the refs came out for their pre-game skate I realized the ref for this game had an uncanny resembelance to Anderson. I even thought she may be Anderson's sister. (Although, my wife disagreed. It could have been the beer.) So, there I was enjoying my $7 dollar beer as the game started but to my suprise with less than a minute gone by I notice the ref's arm up as she is calling a penalty on team USA. Not only was I in disbelief about this call so were all the fans. So, I shout out "NICE CALL ANDERSON!!!" and everyone around me starts laughing except Dave . He was standing in the tunnel between the benches and my seat is just above the tunnel in the first row. He turns around and asks me with attitude do you mean "Todd Anderson the WCHA referree?" To say the least I was stunned. I asked myself, why is this guy calling me out? Who is this guy? Is he a fellow ref? I replied akwardly yes Todd Anderson. I figured there was no point denying the fact that i knew who he was since I was wearing a DU jersey and yelled out his name.

The most awkward part though was before I could say anything else the folks sitting behind me yelled "ANDERSON IS THE WORST REF EVER." After that was said I busted out laughing and he turned away from us with a utter look of shock. The rest of the game was very awkard because he remained standing in the tunnel but would not even look up in the stands. The only reason i knew his name was because he had a badge on that had his name on it.

What made me so curious was the fact that he called me out. He must really like anderson to put himself in such an awkward situation.

No official confirmation, but it looks like DU has a new recruit Dan Olszewski from the NAHL.

This looks like a great class shaping up for next year. Zucker, Shore and Bennett have had some pretty good press on this thread, but I don't remember hearing much about Makowski. Can you refresh my memory? By the way, I like the way the coach calls Olszewski, "Ozzie", very cool.

2010 Recruiting Class
F Jason Zucker (U.S. Under-18)
D David Makowski (Green Bay, USHL)
F Nick Shore (U.S. Under-18)
F Beau Bennett (Penticton, BCHL)
F Dan Olszewski (St. Louis, NAHL)

Makowski is the second leading scoring defenseman in the USHL for the Green Bay Gamblers. He is 20 years old and could have received a full scholarship to play college hockey this season but he wanted to play for DU. When Wiercioch returned to Denver this season Makowski had to spend another year in the USHL.

He is a very solid player and will step in and play a lot of minutes next season for DU. To put it into perspective he will be three or four years older than Wrenn & Phillips were this season.

Makowski will be replacing Brookwell who is graduating.

Potential future Captain for DU.

Yeah, that's a great looking class. I like the fact that Olszewski will be either 20 or 21 years old when he arrives at DU. Last time we had a talented older forward come in, it worked out pretty well. Guy by the name of Bozak.

BTW, I wonder if Bozak wishes that he stayed at DU for one more year. He definitely got a nice payday. But with all his injuries, sicknesses and the apparently bad state of the Leafs, it has been a rough year for him.

Ozzie is no Tyler Bozak. Bozak averaged 2.2 points per game in the BCHL in 2006-07. He outscored Kyle Turris by 7 points that season to lead the BCHL in scoring.

If you got Kevin Ulanski type numbers from Olszewski you'd be ecstatic. I think he's going to be like Vossberg or Knowlton.

Yeah, I certainly don't expect Ozzie to be in the same category as Bozak. Based on what little I have read, however, I have a feeling that Ozzie will be a notch above Knowlton and Vossberg. (Although Knowlton has impressed me at times this season.)

I guess my main point, was that I like getting the skilled older freshmen, because they will adjust to the physical rigors of the college game a lot faster than your typical 17 year old kid. And it sounds like Ozzie has a good work ethic, too, which goes a long way.

You are totally right. DU is mining gold in the NAHL finding big, hard hitting, hard working, character guys who can play on the third or fourth lines, kill penalties and bring maturity to the program.

When you compare DU to the Gophers, they have 20 NHL draft picks on their roster. A bunch of those draftees aren't going to be happy about killing penalties, playing on the energy line or sacrificing their stats for the good of the team.

The great thing about 21 year old Freshmen is that they turn into 25 year old Seniors.:D

Exactly!

On a somewhat related note--I really thought this would be the year that Glasser and Gifford would break out and contribute a lot of points, but it hasn't really happened yet. I know how valuable they are to the team in other ways--probably keeping other teams' top lines in check, playing a physical game, etc. But I'm wondering if someone with a keener eye can tell me if the roles they're playing completely hamper their ability to contribute more often on the scoresheet? Or is the explanation that some players never really develop a scorer's touch?

Oh my God Pablo, I couldn't agree more!! Remember how highly recruited they were, both of them drafted, lots of high expectations. INCH even had Glasser at one point a "player to watch" for DU!! From what I've seen, Glasser has major wheels and comes oh so close to scoring and Gifford seems like a skilled "mucker and grinder". I don't get it, with the exception of Glasser's hat trick last year, we have seen relatively little from them. Let's hope the last part of their college season bears fruit, but I kinda doubt it, ****...

Thats pretty cool. Lets hope they can keep rolling. I'll try and look for a link for the Blog.

Donovan & Zucker made team USA. Both players exceeded all expectations and deserve this rich honor.
