All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Great weekend of college hockey. End to end action, lots of skill, and very good goaltending. Both games had a great flow. It reminded me more of a European style game--with a focus on passing and finesse, and less on hard checking or some of the other BS that you get when playing CC or North Dakota. Saturday's game was of course a much better with the result, with the exciting win in OT. A victory like that in front of the sellout crowd (getting rarer these days) provides great momentum for the team, and helps to generate some buzz around the program that has been lacking a bit since the end of the Gwoz period.

Crazy that we played so well on Saturday without LaLeggia, Shore and Larazza. Moore and Heinen really stepped up offensively. I'm pretty excited about Heinen--he's got a great presence out there, one of those "effective" players, even as a freshman, that could really become a point producer for DU. If that kid has a good work ethic, watch out!

Nice payday for the Skulls. And appropriate payback to a p.c. administration too.

FYI, the locker room renovation will be done this summer after the season ends. More info as it becomes available.

Our JZ is making his presence felt in Minnesota. In 11 games , he's 5-2-7 which leads the Wild in goals. He was 2md star in the Dallas win and didn't even score

Could the Bozak-Kessell bromance be threatened by Coyle and Zucker?

Do you think DU can auction off the cowpie/squashed jelly donut/thingie rug?:p

Auction off the Ruckus costume, too. We shouldn't be too critical at how long it's taken to bury the duck. After all, it's only been a decade. Like lava flowing uphill.

To recap the show, for those that didn't listen, or don't care to spend 20 minutes listening:

- Monty is expecting a girl in January, he has 2 boys already
- Expects Butcher and Cowley to be WJC locks, and hopes Moore gets an invite. Also suspects that Heinan is getting looked at by Team Canada
- Really likes having the guys playing in the WJC, good for the kids, good for recruiting
- Leggs was vomiting Saturday morning, by 5p four more guys were sick. Put them all on IV, only Janssen and Loney wound up playing.
- By Monday 9 guys were sick and out of practice, including Cowley. Most of the guys are back by now, though lacking stamina.
- Jaillet will likely get a start this weekend (probably Friday, since Cowley is still a little under the weather), was expecting to start him this past Saturday against BC, but Cowley earned the second start.
- Grant Arnold captained up prior to Saturday's OT, grabbed the team together, got them believing in themselves, voila: victory.

- Stupid radio host made the final question about the Avs. Ho-hum.

Cowley was invited to the eval camp as a repacement for an injured goalie. But last weekend he and Demko battled to a tie of elite goalies.
Burke (WHL 4.09 GAA .875 Sv%) and Halvorsen (OHL 3.45 GAA .899 Sv%) were the other 2 at camp.
Cowley 1.72 GAA .938 Sv %
Demko 1.85 Sv% .932 Sv %

Based on those numbers Cowley should be a lock.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

It was good to see Tyler Bozak back in Denver last night. I went to the game, and Bozak had a good one. A power play goal during regulation, plus he scored his shootout attempt (no surprise there), and held the puck at one point for like 30 seconds skating around Avs players who were dying for a line change. I think Bozak is at 5 goals for the season so far with the Leafs.

In recruiting news Brad Hawkinson's younger brother, Brian, committed to Miami yesterday. Brad tweeted about it.

Congrats to my brother @29Hawkinson for committing to Miami. Wrong NCHC team but definitely looking forward to having a Hawkinson matchup!

Oh yeah, I'm a regular listener and "question texter-inner" to the show. I don't think that station streams online; which is a shame. We need more DU fans to participate. There is ALOT of commercials - I'll say that much. Seems like 10 mins of Monty and 20 mins of advertising to me. And yes, it seems like the host will bring up irrelevant topics (Broncos, Avs, Rockies) as filler time when he has to, if there's nothing good to talk about with Jim. Sometimes Monty brings a player along, so that mixes it up and gives some good insight. It's a good radio 1/2 hour show though. Like I said, they need more diehard fans to call in, text in, or else be there when they do it on location at a local bar. I like it.
