All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Laura Gottlieb, daughter of Alvin. I googled him, seems clean, but his customers were probably the boys. I love Mob books. Just read a great one about Sam Giancanna, Chicago's own. Very smart man. I met Laura on a teen tour of Europe. I didn't want to publish her name in case you were married to her

Don't know her. Although I had a Gottlieb girl in my 8th grade class. I wonder if Laura was related but older or younger. The real deal in Chicago (for nearly 50 years) was Tony Accardo. His grandson quarterbacked the high school to the state championship game. He went on to Ohio State and was a first round draft choice. Anyway, the rumor was that grandpa smoked his cigars in the stadium watching the kid play. And for some strange reason, the biology teachers working security were reluctant to tell him to put them out. Tony was the Babe Ruth of gangsters. Never spent a minute in jail. Tony was the one who decided Giancanna was the head of the Outfit. If you get to decide who's the king, then you're the king.

I went to grade school with the sons of Sam "Teetz" Battaglia. One a year older, the other a year younger. The older boy turned out to be just exactly what you'd expect, died of a "heart attack" before he was 30. The younger son was an all state running back and played on a national championship Pony Legue team.

Anthony "The Ant" Spilotro (the guy on whom Pesci's character in Casino was based) also lived in OP. A nasty, psychopathic piece of work if ever there was one. That business from the movie of putting a guy's head in a vise was evidently true. He and his brother, in fact, were murdered and dumped into a shallow grave in Indiana. Casino is the story of how the Chicago Outfit (Tony Accardo) drove the New York families out of Vegas. Kansas City had nothing to do with it.

Great update on the 2004 players, Vizoroo. My favorite DU team of all time. It's hard to imagine a better story, and a better (or more dramatic) season than that one. Those guys really put DU hockey back on the map, and ended the super-long national title drought. Caldwell, James, Gauthier, Carle, Berkhoel and the rest--they definitely came through in "THE EVENT." "By George," they won it. It will be great to see them honored this weekend--well deserved, as they were one of top 2-3 most important teams in the proud history of DU hockey!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

A great team. Second in my mind only to '67-'68. Each took a different road to a NC. I had about given up on DU as a NC contender. Boy, howdy, was I wrong!!!! Watched the semi-final game against tUMD while anchoring the news on KTRH in Houston. Every time I looked up, DU had scored. Screaming "holy sh*t!" in the middle of a local news story wouldn't have been a good career move. The 6X3 is the stuff of legends.

Great post OPio. You filled in some early gaps for me. Naturally giancanna book was partially about Attardo. Giancanna took other route and accepted Lansky/Luciano partnership of not treading on others territories. Giancanna convinced Lansky to call off hit on Joe Kennedy. He wanted to own a President.

Great posts on 2004 team. Lots of smart kids on that team. DU trustees and administration should be proud, but they didn't get it.

Moonie also pimped for JFK with Judith Campbell Exner, who was astonishingly good looking. Giancana liked playing the role of Mafia big shot. Dated Phyllis Maguire when she and her sisters were a very big deal (Sugartime was their big hit). Accardo preferred to stay in the back ground, pulling the strings. Most of the Mafia dons in Chicago lived modestly, nice homes, but not mansions. The exception was Accardo, his 22-room home had an indoor pool, bowling alley, English pub that seated 50 and a bath tub carved out of a solid block of onyx, among other amenities. On his 1040's he listed his occupation as "beer salesman." That's a h*lluva lot of Schlitz, podnuh.

One assumes the hit on Giancana was approved by Accardo.

"I wanted a coach and got a priest instead" BC's Tim Sheehy who turned down a scholie from DU to play for "Snooks" Kelly at BC.

wow, Tim Sheehy! Gotta tell my Dad that quote. He loved Tim Sheehy and was close to Snooks:)

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Overall, a good game by both DU and BC. The difference was BC being able to score on the PP and DU couldn't. Although it is early in the season, I view tonight as a must win for DU for two reasons. A win in November counts just as much as a win in February or March. In terms of PWR, any win against a top 5 or 10 team goes a long way all season long. Two of the best college goalies faced each other last night and it was all that was advertised. Besides the goalies, both teams' defense was stifling giving the forwards limited offensive chances.

On the nose in all respects.
