A lady lawyer friend of mine who has two degrees from DU used to tell the story of a DU fundraiser (in a Don Vito Corleone moment) who informed her he had written a number for a suggested donation on a piece of paper, then shoved it across the desk to her. She and I worked for more than a decade to advance DU's interests at college nights and alumni meetings, and I absolutely believe her.

She also has a picture of her mother, pregnant with her, in the bleachers at Wrigley Field. Pre-natal proof she is a Cubs fan!

A buddy of mine had the best Cubs story. When he was a little boy, his dad took him to Wrigley Field during one of those seasons at the end of the career of Bobby Bonds when he was playing for the Cubs. The kid's favorite player was a young guy, I forget exactly who, but maybe Bill Buckner. Anyway, they get there early, and the young player won't give the kid an autograph, so Bonds, of all people, yells at the young player, tells him to drag his *** over and be nice to the kid. Kid ends up getting his picture taken with Buckner as well as with Bonds, and one sitting on Fergie Jenkins's lap, just for good measure.

Man, talk about a life time memory. I recall watching Jimmy Piersall (after the breakdown) gassing with bleacher creatures. Somebody threw down a crutch and he hobbled around for a while, then threw it back. They were all having a great time. I was at Wrigley for a Sunday game against the Reds. They won. Meanwhile, the Mets beat the Cards in NY, which put the Cubs in first place in mid July. 40K people at the game. And 25K of us waited until the guys in the scoreboard pulled down the pennants, changed the order, and then ran them back up. Another life time memory.

Going Home

Chris Butler signed a 1 year contract with the St. Louis Blues. Chris played high school hockey at Chaminade in St Louis before going on to the USHL and DU.

Paul Stastny also went there. The Marianists have a couple of Chaminades around the country and I attended the one on Long Island. There is also Chaminade College in Hawaii run by the same brothers.

Cowley and Butcher are on 27 man roster that continues play in Lake Placid at USA WJC Camp.

Mary knew me a little bit. She was always nice, motherly nice. I had the same 2 seats on a season ticket basis for 4 years. (1$ per seat per game) So maybe 2-3 years after graduation, I call the ticket office and tell Mary that I'd like a pair of seats for a certain game. She got me in my old seats which were excellent seats. I have no idea how she did this.

Wasn't it Chaminade that upset UVa years ago when Virginia had Ralph Sampson? Huge pre-season deal.

Scary Article in yesterday's NY Times written by Marc Tracy. DU picture in it as well as quotes from Peg. (maybe today's NYT) I have no clue how to post link. I read about it and saw link in Hopkins post at laxpower.com forum page. ****, we needed to be included in the Big 10 hockey conference. Nobody know how votes will go this week at NCAA meetings where 5 power conferences may try to break away.

Here is the link. The BIG 5 (ACC, B1G, SEC, PAC-12, BIG 12) aren't breaking away from NCAA but are going to be able to give more benefits ($$$$) to the student-athletes whereas schools outside the BIG 5 won't be able to. Your right that Lax is probably the only way we can get into the B1G as an associate member like JHU unless hockey somehow can get into it as an associate. Hoops doesn't have a prayer to get into any of those conferences and there is no football. For hockey, the B1G and Notre Dame (ACC affiliate) will be able to give more benefits to players than the other conferences. In LAX, the B1G and ACC including Notre Dame will be able to give more benefits than the other schools. This immediately gives those schools and conferences a leg up on everyone else in recruiting.

DU78, we can add BC to the list for hockey. My guess schools not in Big 5 conference will be allowed to give "full scholarship athletes" $2,000 cash. That is maybe 5 lax players. I have no idea how many hockey players are on full rides. Clue us in 78. Ivies benefit because they are not affected since they can give as much financial aid as they choose. Let's see what happens with the vote tomorrow.

18 scholies in hockey. Not everyone is on a full ride. I would assume the $2G would be for a full ride and prorated for partials.

More on the Butler-Stastny-Chaminade Connection

Jason Zucker has a fan at The Hockey News.
Jason Zucker is a future scoring-line winger who just signed a two-year contract. This coming season is a two-way arrangement, but 2015-16 is a one-way deal. With that being said, don’t count Zucker out from not only making the team this year, but also flirting with 40 points in his first full season.

Surprised to see that Kyle Ostrow has left the Colorado Eagles and will play for the Lowen Frankfurt Lions in Germany this season.
Kyle Ostrow is looking forward to the challenge of the Lions: "I was never in Europe and therefore huge forward to Frankfurt. I've heard that the lions have great fans and the Organization has clear goals in mind, what was for me an important point in the decision. Of course I want to get as quickly as possible on the new League and the environment, to meet the expectations of me. Ultimately, it is as always. I'll do what helps the team to be successful. I look forward to the new cultural experiences, which I will do in Frankfurt. As of August, here we go, I can't wait!"
For Kyle Ostrow, the Frankfurt lions are the first station in Europe. Last season, the 26 year-old winger had his point best season in the ECHL with 28 goals and 38 assists in 64 games for the Colorado Eagles, for which he was active since 2012.
The overall is the striker on 169 games in the ECHL, where he gained 124 points. Also he played 12 games in the AHL (American Hockey League).
Still, the 178 cm tall and weighing 84 kg left shooter looks back successful years in the team of the University of Denver (NCAA) on four. In three of the four seasons he was appointed each the League due to his performances in the all-star team. In the year 2011, he led the team as captain. Butcher is tied for 2nd in scoring through 4 games 1-4-5.
None of the goalies were great in the Blue-White team environment. Until today BC's Demko had the worst stats of all 4 goalies. Until Cowley let in 2 goals on the first 2 shots against the Finns, he had the best stats. But he did shut out the Finns the rest of the way.
