Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Interesting half time interview with former DU swimmer Brad Busse. Among other things they showed two photos from back in the day. In one, the team posed in their speedos up in the mountains during a snow shower. In the other, and truly shocking, BTW, they posed with each wearing a Boone style hat!! I'm sure PC alarms went off all 'round campus with that one.

Final:

Denver 17
Marquette 9

Don't be fooled by the final score. It was a convincing win for Denver. The Pioneers scored on their first shot forty three seconds into the game. Marquette then scored two goals in about one and one half minutes to take a 2-1 lead. From that point through the end of the third period Denver went on a 13-2 run to establish a commanding 14-4 lead.

The fourth period was played in large part by Denver's second and third teamers.

Erik Adamson and Jack Bobzien had hat tricks for the Pios. Graduating senior Cole Adamson scored his first career goal with 1.2 seconds to play. Nice touch on which to end the game.

Denver finished regular season conference play with an undefeated record and will be the #1 seed in next week's conference tourney. The Pioneers carry a nine game winning streak into the event.

They were impressive. From DU leading 5-4, the Pios opened it up to 14-4 and then Tierney took his foot off the gas. Equally impressive--the TV guys said DU returns 95% of its scoring next year.

Jamie Faus--one of two goalies splitting time in net--graduates. Ryan LaPlante returns as a senior. Among the top eight scorers entering today's game, only Jeremy Noble [11 goals] and Harrison Archer [4 goals and 1 more today] graduate. Coach Tierney likely needs to develop another goalie in back of LaPlante, and even with that, Denver should be highly regarded entering next season.

Good crowd at today's game. Vocal at the appropriate times and many of the people sitting in my section were knowledgable about the game--not merely taking up space in the stands. Quite frankly, over the past several seasons there has been a greater student presence at lacrosse games than hockey games. The presence of the grilling society at the games, warm spring weather at many of the games, people bidding good-bye to winter and hello to spring, the approaching closure of the school year and the team's continued success under Bill Tierney have coalesced to make lacrosse the "in" sport with the student body. Tierney has the program on firm footing and I think that will continue for the foreseeable future.

Nice weekend for the Denver athletic program. Yesterday the men's and women's lacrosse teams won regular season conference titles. Today, both the men's and women's tennis teams won post-season conference titles. Earlier in the month the men's and women's golf teams won post-season conference titles. Well done ladies and gentlemen.

Lest we forget women’s soccer, men’s soccer, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, and hockey all won post-season conference titles this year.

The Summit League may question admitting DU with the number of titles the Pios have won.:D

During the Blackhawk game this afternoon the announcer remembered the birthday of Keith Magnuson, a great Blackhawk, founder of the Blackhawk Alumni Association and a real great guy.

Hard to believe, but Keith's death occurred over 10 years ago. Found a couple of good articles -- the first written 10 years after his death and the second in 1994. The Chicago Tribune has a number of other articles about Maggy.

He honored us by his presence on the Pioneers. It's time for DU to return the favor.

Neither the Denver men's lacrosse team nor the Denver women's lacrosse team play in the Summit.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

I feel like I'm tugging y'all's sleeves here....do I have to throw myself at you to get a bonafide answer?? :) One more time, and then I promise I will not bring it up again. There was some chatter detected about the NHL holding an outdoor game in Denver - further insinuating that Coors Field would be the venue, and also assuming the Colorado Avalanche would be involved. There was also chatter picked up that there may be a teaser, or warm-up game featuring perhaps college or semi-pro teams again, also assuming one contestant team would be from Colorado. Now that DU's schedule is out, with no mention of this "rumor" - does anyone know if this is officially a dead issue (meaning for DU; not nessecarily for the Avs)? At this point, is it possible, or even reasonable to think that the DU schedule could still be amended to reflect something like this??? Thank you in advance, for someone out there to answer this with sincerity and honesty.

As of now, only one outdoor game has been officially announced and that is the Winter Classic with the Washington Capitals hosting it. It was annnounced in late 2013. Rumors are that it will be in the Nationals Park and Philly will be the opponent. The other day Bettman announced that there will be other outdoor games this coming season but not the 6 like this year. Some say there will be only 4 or 5 total outdoor games. No official announcements have been made. Boston and Colorado are two locations that are getting a lot of press for the Stadium Series Events. Until the other NHL outdoor games are made official it makes no senses for DU or any other schools to make announcements about outdoor games. If Denver does get a game in Coors Field as rumored, DU and CC could be likely opponents in a college outdoor game. They play on February 20 and 21. If that doesn't work, their other home opponents in the second half are SCSU on Jan. 16-17, UMD on Jan. 30-31 and Miami on Feb. 27-28. The NHL is going to schedule the outdoor games to meet their schedule and no one elses. If the timing is right for DU and/or CC, I could see one or both of them playing an outdoor game. A lot of it depends on how long will the ice be down in Coors Field, one week, two weeks? I would think due to the sun in Colorado that the ice system designed and used in LA last year would be needed in Coors Field. I am not sure how many outdoor systems the NHL has but the one used in LA last year was specifically designed for warmer weather. Last year the first Stadium Series game in Chicago was announced in early May with all of the games announced over the following few weeks. I would assume the NHL will start announcing the other 2015 outdoor games in the next few weeks.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

It's a longshot but...

In the first round of this year's playoffs the Boston Bruins beat the Detroit Red Wings. Boston will now face the Montreal Canadiens, Les Habs having dismissed the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Assuming Boston dispatches Montreal it's possible the Bruins could meet the New York Rangers in the conference finals.

Taking one more step out on a proverbial limb it's possible the Bruins could then meet the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. The possibility exists that the Boston Bruins could win the Stanley Cup this season by defeating each of the other Original Six teams which did make the playoffs: Detroit, Montreal, New York and Chicago. Again it's a longshot, but if it happens it would be an Original Six Stanley Cup of sorts.

With the Avs trailing 2-0 late in the 1st and killing a 5 on3, Ryan O'Reilly blocked a shot in the defensive zone and feathered a pass to the neutral zone , where Paul Stastny was just exiting the penalty box. Stastny fired a wrist shot past Darcy Kuemper to make it 2-1. Still looks like this series comes back to Denver for a seventh game on Wednesday.

you forgot to mention it was a shorthanded goal.

You're reading comprehension is shoddy. Go read the post a second time. The first sentence says it was a 5 on 3. Further, the post says Stastny was coming out of the box--only Stastny, no one else. Ergo, it must have been a short handed goal.

All BIG EAST Honors
Senior Jeremy Noble was named the Midfielder of the Year, while junior teammate Ryan LaPlante was tabbed Goalkeeper of the Year.
In all, Denver led with seven All-BIG EAST selections, including a conference-best six on the first team. Noble and LaPlante were named to the first team alongside junior Wes Berg (33 goals, 15 assists, 5 EMO goals) at attack, junior Erik Adamson (33 G, 7 A, 16 ground balls) at midfield, freshman Christian Burgdorf (13 games played, 18 GB) on defense and senior goalkeeper Jamie Faus (14 GP, 4-2, 8.20 goals-against average, .540 save percentage) at the coaches’ at-large selection. Sophomore attackman Jack Bobzien (34 G, 17 A) was the Pios’ sole second-team representative.
