All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Denver plays Drexel this coming weekend in the NCAA lacrosse tourney. The last team to defeat Denver was Penn.....which last weekend lost to Drexel....largely on the basis of three goals in eleven point three seconds. I'll repeat that: a hat trick in 11.3 seconds.

===>In the first round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Drexel turned a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 lead in just 11.3 seconds. The Dragons' Jules Raucci scored with 17.7 seconds left in the second quarter to cut fourth-ranked Penn's lead to one. On the following faceoff, Nick Saputo won and bounded down the field to earn his second goal of the game and knot it at six.

Drexel still had more scoring in them before half. Saputo basically replicated the goal he had scored seconds earlier, winning the faceoff and whipping it in for a 7-6 lead and a hat trick in two quarters. The craziest part: Before today's game, Saputo had scored three goals all season.<===

Here are my shots from the UNC @ DU game last Saturday. Dark and rainy are not the photographer's best friend, but I got some good shots anyway! CO14er's Lacrosse Shots.

So that guy in #6 did get hit in the cup, eh? From my angle we couldn't tell if it was cup or leg. Either way, it was a wicked shot he took from about 4 feet away. Poor guy was puking on the bench shortly afterwards.

Funny to see in your pictures (and on the video screen) how green and colorful everything looks- definitely better than it was in person for much of the evening!

You did a great job making a pretty rainy day look like sunny and bright.. Watching on the PC could see the rain get heavier and the people wetter as the game progressed.

Anyone coming to Delaware? Yes, those 3 quick goals were amazing.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Monty announced the 4 players who signed LOIs for next season. Remember, only players receiving scholie money sign LOIs.

The four players are defensemen Tariq Hammond (Calgary, Alberta) and Adam Plant (Penticton, British Columbia), forward Danton Heinen (Langley, British Columbia) and goaltender Tanner Jaillet (Red Deer, Alberta). That doesn't mean that D-men Sean Mostrom and Blake Hillman are not coming this season. Hillman could come the following season especially since Didier is coming back for his senior year. Mostrom could be a recruited walk-on his first year and doesn't have to sign an LOI.

Just watched the Canadiens opening ceremony, Fire on Ice. This was shot for the series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Notice during the National Anthem, sung very well by Sara Diamond, the camera pans the Lightning players on the ice. And easily recognizable, standing at attention is Matt Carle. Some DU traditions live on. Thumbs Up!

Don't know the traditions for O Canada, but PK Subban's jumping up and down hardly seems the likely one:rolleyes:

New assistant coach--check
4 LOI's signed--check
Everyone coming back--check, check, and double check
Time for team captains!

Renovation of the locker room (with removal of the jelly donut). Check?

Re: All Things Denver XXXVIII: On To Better Days!

Removal of Robert Coombe as chancellor. Check.
I'm not bold enough to suggest that Coombe's retirement was a direct result of mishandling the mascot replacement. The media portrayed DU's admin in less than a favorable light (riduculed might be more appropriate) for becoming embroiled in what became a no-win situation. It only was a symptom of his disassociation with the students and alumni.
Even though the board bears the final responsibility for firing Gwoz, these two events only heightened the alumni's dissatisfaction with the current admin. In both cases the admin had no plan on how to relate to students, parents, alums or the media. ( And how it might affect other members of the athletic staff.) This played out as alums not purchasing season tickets or refusing to donate more dollar$. And that the board understands.
(Despite the rancor directed toward Peg D-B, it appears she and Ron Grahame got it right hiring Monty.)

Wish I could put a big check mark here. Have to think another 20 win season, perhaps a win in the NCAAs might be required to get this done. Or a recruit with a wealthy family--BTW where is Joe Colborne's father these days?
My offer still stands to split the cost of one of Target's finest shag bathmats to cover the d*mn thing.:D

Yeah, a real shaggy pink one would be nice. I guess this project keeps getting deferred. At some point, ageing facilities will negatively impact recruiting.

The whole mascot embroglio is a textbook unforced error. The idea that Michael Sam's boy friend, in lederhosen and a frilly shirt is a "Pioneer" is both insulting and ridiculous. Or a bunny rabbit. We have a perfectly acceptable mascot, with a unique history tied to one of our legendary coaches and one of America's most famous names. He's universally accepted by students, alumni and fans. Silly, overstated and historically inaccurate objections to him come from a microscopic group of student and like minded administrators. We spent tens of thousands of dollars to placate these people. And created a process in which fairness and integrity were thrown out the window, which left DU looking craven, dishonest and detached from reality. Nice work.

No less an authority on college athletics than Karl Rove says the entire situation shows classic signs of brain damage.

Here's a reason to like the Habs. They pay tribute to DU hockey right on their big scoreboard! "LE CLUB DU HOCKEY" They know what's up.
It should be fun to see who thinks I'm actually this stupid and feels the need to comment negatively.
