Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Any concerns about the short turn around? I still want to know, from you DU historians out there, when is the last time Denver had a short turn around like this week... in the regular season. Maybe the Denver Cup?? But no - they usually played each day in those tourneys, eh? Tuesday college hockey - heck yeah!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Anybody know what's going on at the blog? It hasn't been updated for a couple of weeks. DG on vacation? Strike? In rehab?

I've been wondering the same thing. Hope he is well!

Spoke to DG the other day and the blog will be shutting down soon. Pretty much it takes up too much time. From what I understand all of the content will remain as is so you can always go back and look at the stories.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

With Q and Will Butcher at the WJC camp, DU will be down to 21 skaters for Monty to pick the 18 skaters for tomorrow night's game against UMass. DU will be going for their 10th win (9-6-3) against UMass (6-11-2). DU up to 25 in PWR and UMass sits at 35. This is a very winnable game for the Pios and would be a nice ending to the first half of the season.

On D he will have only 6 available: Didier, LaLeggia, Makowski, Neville, VanVoorhis and Zajac.

He will have 15 forwards to pick the 12 who will skate: Allen, Arnold, Bennett, Doremus, Jacobson, Janssen, Larraza, Levin, Loney, Marcinew, Moore, Ritt, Romig, Tabrum and Toriumi. I would venture that Bennett, Jacobson and Toriumi are the 3 that do not dress.

I see Sam getting the start as DU needs every out of conference win that is possible.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

DU up to 17 from 20 in weekly USCHO poll and receiving votes (19th) in USA Hockey/USA Today poll. DU on the outside looking in at 25th in PWR. Need to continue to win to move up in PWR.

Sammy NCHC Goalie of the Week again. Name the freakin' award after him!!!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVII

Just found out an interesting DU connection. USA WJC and Providence College goalie Jon Gillies is the nephew of former DU goalie Chris Gillies who played 1986-89. His father played at UNH and his grandfather at Norwich in Vermont. All are/were goalies.

+1

A couple of thoughts from the weekend:
Jay's interview with Seth Appert on Friday night starts at about the 47:45 minute mark on PioVision-Audio. You can actually sense a warmth/good fellowship between them.
Back to Jay being Jay--RPI skater Milos Bubela, Jay's first pronunciation: Milosh buhBOOla.

du78, you mentioned Garrett Allen was related to a Gold Medal skater and I'm thinking speed skater--Bonnie Blair ? Erik Heiden?

Did anyone else notice North Dakota is NOT in the Top20 on USCHO?:D

Chris Gillies was in net the last time DU played a midweek game during the season (to answer a question by 32 Degrees), when DU played the 1988 US Olympic team at the old barn. DU also played a game that season against Moscow Dynamo which I believe was also may have been midweek.

Gillies was excellent against Team USA, DU lost 4-2 with an ENG (I believe) and he had 40+ saves I seem to remember.

The Moscow Dynamo game was interesting. DU lost 11-1 or 11-2 and were outshot maybe 70-15. The Russian team came out here for maybe a 25 or 30 game tour, playing various teams from NCAA up to IHL. I'm pretty sure they scored 10+ goals against all their NCAA opponents.

A good place to follow Q Shore, Will Butcher and the rest of the WJC hopefuls:

Or

@chrismpeters
Pairing of Connor Carrick and Wil Butcher that worked so well in Lake Placid looking dynamic as D on power play.

He will be tweeting during the game Tuesday night in Mankato.

I should stop being so surprised when one of us comes up with a nugget of history (especially Chris). "Old Pio Annecdote Alert" we played the Rooskies in '68 in that international tournament they used to have at the Broadmoor. Clubbed us senseless, about 7 or 8 to 1. And scored shorthanded twice, on the same penalty! That was our last lost of the season (evidently Michigan Tech didn't look so tough after playing those boys) they ran off over 20 consecutive victories and shut out the "Team Formerly Known as the Sioux" in the NC game.
