All Things Denver XXXVI

DU women's soccer gets upset by CU in the NCAA tournament on a quirky set piece with about 6 minutes to go. DU had a couple chances towards the end, but a bummer of a loss to end a very good season. Only the 2nd loss of the year.

They got manhandled the first 60 min, were lucky the score wasn't worse.

In better news: sweeeeeep!!

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Caught my first game of the season tonight. There probably won't be too many this year, but at least I got to see them put up a W. It wasn't the prettiest game, but it was the prettiest result.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Hey, what gives? The box score shows there were some penalties at the end of the game, from that little skirmish along the end boards? They didn't announce anything. 4 minute penalties for roughing. That's kind of dumb, at the end of a game, unless it's like a misconduct or suspension. I mean, what are they going to do, make the guys sit in the shower for 4 mins? It's all on paper......(right?)

End of season rankings?

Just 35 and change in the house? Sad. Disappointing.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Thus far in the season Denver has won six games against a total of four different teams [Merrimack, Niagara, Colorado College and Western Michigan]. Merrimack is currently 3-6-1. Niagara is currently 3-6-1. Colorado College is currently 1-6-1. Western Michigan is currently 3-5-2.

Between now and the end of the calendar 2013 portion of the schedule, Denver will play four more teams [Air Force, Miami, RPI and UMass]. Air Force is currently 6-3-0. Miami is currently 7-4-1. RPI is currently 6-4-2. UMass is currently 3-7-2. Denver will play a total of seven games against these four teams to finish the 'proverbial' first half of the season. Six of the seven games will be played on the road after a stretch of the season which had the Pioneers playing nine of twelve contests at home. Over the course of the next month we'll begin to see how tough this year's team is on the road.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I'll take being on top of the conference for however long it lasts

I agree. A few days ago we were wondering whether DU could be on top of the standings in the USHL, let alone the NCHC. This may turn out to be like the Cubs being in 1st after an opening day win, but I'll take it.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I want to be between 1-4 in the NCHC when the regular season ends. That should get us a NCAA invite, for to finish in the top 4, our Pairwise rating should be top 14. If some forwards would start scoring, this can be done.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I know its early but lets look at the current PWR.

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/ratings/ncaapwcr.php

DU has played 12 games and is 6-5-1. They are currently below the TUC line and are ranked 37th. To date, they have played three schools above the TUC line and none in the top 16. So far they have lost all 4 games to teams above the current TUC line and one to a team below.

They lost two to UNO who is ranked 22, lost one to UAF who is ranked 25 and lost one to UAA who is ranked 30. They lost one game to Canisius who is ranked 50.

DU beat Merrimack twice who is ranked 44 and WMU twice who is 43. The beat and tied CC who is 53 and beat Niagara who is ranked 52. These are teams that DU should beat if they want to have success.

They have yet to play any powerhouses and have not beaten any TUC schools. Hopefully the one loss to Canisius does not ultimately hurt them in the end but it will not help.

The schedule for the last 24 games of the season is significantly more challenging. If DU has any hopes of making the tourney they need some significant wins over TUC teams. Based on the current PWR ratings this is who DU has remaining games with. Obviously the ratings will fluctuate but the games DU must win are pretty obvious and they must get some wins against some of the higher ranked teams.

Currently above DU in PWR
# 2 SCSU - DU has 4 games with, both crucial series for PWR
#9 Miami - DU has 4 games with, another two crucial series
#19 RPI - A big out of conference 2-game series on the road
#22 UND - Only 2 games but nothing has to be said about facing the Sioux at home
#26 UMD - Tough 2-game road series on the road
#29 Brown - Single home game to start the 2nd half, need to get right on track after the Christmas break
#33 UNO - Need to avenge the 2 home losses on the road
#35 AFA - Always a tough team to play against especially in a home and home series

Currently below DU in PWR
#41 UMass - Single road game to wrap up the first half
#43 WMU - 2 games at their place after sweeping them at Magness last weekend
#53 CC - Final 2 games of the 4 game series which DU won at home and tied on the road (NCHC shootout win).

DU is really going to need to win a lot of games as they only play 2 teams which would be in the tourney today. Unlike past years where you would play MN and WI, who would more often be ranked highly, those teams are not on the schedule. Let's hope that DU continues on their current roll and gets to the Christmas break with several more wins. The schedule gets much tougher starting this weekend against Air Force.

I was thinking 1-3, but more I think about it, 4 might pull it off too.

I was happy with the speed the players had, they rarely got beat. Loved how the (has-been or never-was, take your pick) coach whined about everything, even calls that went his way. I guess he is so bad that the usher (who we've known for several years now) told us not to even accidentally hit the glass behind the bench lest he try to get us kicked out of our seats. PK was good, they adjusted well to WMUs attempts to bring the puck into the box. Very happy with the sweep.

Sammy NCHC Goalie of the Week again, might as well name the award after him :) ;)

Hmmm...I arrived a bit late, but when I got there DU possessed the ball for about 10 minutes straight, so I was thinking DU was going to dominate the match. Then, CU started to assert themselves more toward the end of the 1st half, and also during the second half. I'd say CU had the edge on quality chances overall by maybe one or two, and I think they had a few more corner kicks. But I'm not sure I'd say DU was lucky the score wasn't worse. DU had a couple of grade A chances that they put over the crossbar.

Doesn't matter now...the DU women are done, but our men's soccer team just made the tourney, so hopefully they'll have a better result.

Trust me, he's got nothin' on Amo Bessone who once had to be restrained from climbing out of the bench area to tangle with some students who were giving him sh*t.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

-Got reminded tonight that the cc fan known as Ron Mexico literally has a twin brother.

Thanks for noticing me you pukcing stalker. I was reminded that the "DU fan" known as Chris has a terrible sense of fashion. Cool jacket bro...

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Tyler Pham will be going to West Point next year. Good luck to him.

I'm in favor of that, if the actual name of the award is the "Sammy," as opposed to, like, the "Sam Brittain NCHC Goalie of the Week." :)
