Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I assume you're referring to this year. And I agree. However, there was a time
(back before the invention of the electric light) when we knew how DU would play, every freakin' game.

Mostly the past 8ish years since I've been watching closely. Never really know whether they're going to come out and sweep the Sioux or lay an egg against Huntsville.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I think the last time that I really knew how DU would play, was the 2005 championship team. That team was Consistent with a capital C. Just basically mowed down and wore down the competition. Having Mannino in goal didn't hurt the cause. Plus Stastny, Carle, Gauthier, Skinner, Ulanski, Fulghum, Halme, Paukovich--what a team that was.

Didn't hurt that all those guys basically had career years in 2005 or that it was the last time DU ever got any meaningful scoring production from the third line.

Getting scoring from ANY forward line would be nice right about now.

I've posted before that apart from winning over 250 college football games in 25 years (you do the math!) Tom Osborne lost exactly one game to a team that finished below .500 (Iowa State in Ames Tommy Frazier's freshman year). That means for a quarter century, with only one exception, Osborne always beat the teams he was supposed to beat. As Dennis Leary says: "Think about that."

As a Michigander by birth, I for one, am ecstatic to be playing a team from the LOWER peninsula this weekend. I'd be curious to know the last time DU hosted a LP team? I'm thinking it was WSU.... the former power house from Wayne County? Additionally, I am very hopeful that next year, we'll get a crack at U of M or MSU

Ferris State was in Denver for the disasterous Denver Cup of the 2005-06 season. With only 6 teams in the B1g seems that could be a possibility.

I understand Ishpeming State University has a pretty good team. Maybe we could invite them.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Sixty-five degrees under cloudless skies in the DU neighborhood this afternoon. The ice may not be the "fastest" tonight. Hope to see lots of folks at the game.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Q suspended by Monty tonight for not doing the right thing. Will be back in tomorrow.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

Old Pio was right.
First Star: Trevor Moore (Denver)
Second Star: Zac Larraza (Denver)
Third Star: Justin Kovacs (Western Michigan)

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

I thought Moore played really well against CC last weekend, nice to see it finally show for him.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

This team seems to not be so penalty-ridden, like they were last year. Bennett wasn't in the game tonight either.

Re: All Things Denver XXXVI

In the aftermath of last night's game I'll happily pose the following questions. Will Denver score four goals in a single period again this season? Will Denver score as many as five goals in a game again this season? Will Denver forwards score as many as five goals in a game again this season? Will Denver allow as many as three goals in a game this season and still win?

Even if the answer to all those questions is no it was nice to see the Pioneers "erupt" for five goals--four of them in short order in the second period--and overcome a two goal deficit. It was encouraging to see Doremus and Larraza score in the same game. [Like many Denver fans] I think those two players will need to lead the team's forwards in goal scoring for the Pioneers to have a successful season. Quentin Shore will need to help as well, but I think Doremus and Larraza are more physically imposing players and will score some "blue collar" goals Shore might not score.

I hope the team wins tonight as the schedule becomes challenging with six of the next seven games on the road and not a single home game in the month of December. Good luck to the Pioneers.

DU women's soccer gets upset by CU in the NCAA tournament on a quirky set piece with about 6 minutes to go. DU had a couple chances towards the end, but a bummer of a loss to end a very good season. Only the 2nd loss of the year.
