Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

I guess it is possible and it would be interesting to see how it would pan out if this happens.
I'd be happy for Gwoz if that happened. But I don't recall a college coach getting bumped up directly to an NHL head coaching position. Then again, I don't follow the NHL that much, so maybe it has happened.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

It's shaping up to be an interesting off season, that's for sure. I sure hope Peg knows what she is doing with this decision. I give her the benefit of the doubt, but hopefully she can clarify what really happened.

i could not agree more!!

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Thanks for that in-depth analysis...Who wouldn't be "gross" and likely to come here?

Rud isn't ready, Corbett isn't an upgrade, and Aikens? He doesn't belong anywhere near this list; he might not keep his job in the USHL.

I think Jack Parker was offered the Bruins job at some point the last 20 years but decided to stay at bu...

Dude, i was just thinking of people who would apply and not just be throwaways...Eric Rud is pretty highly thought of...yet, you never answered my question.

Let me pose a question to Denver fans who post on a regular basis in the All Things Denver threads. Whom would you like to see as the next head coach of the Pioneers?

Blasi, Motzko or Jeff Jackson would be nice...
possibly Dean Blais...

This makes no sense! I am stunned by this. Gwoz is one of the classiest (and quirkiest) coaches in college hockey. I certainly hope he lands on his feet and wish him all the best. In my opinion, Gwoz fit with DU. To find another coach with that level of success and the matching personality - good luck.

No idea, but sure wouldn't mind if you pulled Rand Pecknold out west...not that I would wish that on you guys.

Longshot idea: What about Houseley? The guy that coached this past year's WJC gold medalists?

My guess is Housley wouldn't take the job. He coaches a high school team in a high buck twin cities suburb and from what I understand has all the money he will ever need. I am pretty sure he has been offered assistant jobs in he NHL and didn't take them.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

As an alum of the hockey program, I receive weekly updates from Gwoz regarding past games, upcoming games and sometimes some insights into the program that may not be in the public realm. Unless something is in the public realm, I don't post about it until it becomes public. Today Gwoz sent out his last update to the alums. There is nothing in it that isn't already known but I wanted to post it to show the class of Gwoz on this very tough day. Thanks for everything, Gwoz! You took the program from its lowest point and made it a national power, again. I bolded what I thought was the most important part of the update.

Last Friday night in our semi-final game at the NCAA Northeast Regional in Manchester, NH we started strong and held a 2-1 lead after the first period of play but No. 2 seed University of New Hampshire responded with four unanswered goals to beat us 5-2.

We took a 1-0 lead just 2:24 into the action when sophomore Larkin Jacobson drove to the net but had the puck deflected away by the UNH goalie and right onto the stick of sophomore Daniel Doremus who put it away for his 12th tally of the season and second in the last two games. New Hampshire tied the score at 1-1 at 14:21 by scoring on a rebound from just in front of the crease. Freshman Quentin Shore gave us a 2-1 lead when he put away a rebound following a slap shot from teammate Nick Shore following a turnover by New Hampshire deep in its zone with just 2:39 left in the period.

With 5:26 remaining in the second period, UNH tied the game at 2-2 on the power play. Then with just 22 seconds remaining in the period, New Hampshire took its first lead of the game at 3-2 in the virtually the same fashion on the power play.

Early in the third period junior Nick Shore, our leading scorer, was given a five minute major penalty and game misconduct for contact to the head. We successfully killed the penalty off but the Wildcats upped the margin to 4-2 with 11:11 left in regulation. New Hampshire added an empty net goal with 2:20 in regulation to account for the final 5-2 margin.

The game marked our sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Our 2013 senior class became the second consecutive and only the third in program history to advance to qualify for four consecutive NCAA berths.

Unfortunately the UNH loss continued a string of disappointing outcomes for us in recent NCAA tournament appearances. As a result the University has decided to make a leadership change within our men’s hockey program.

It has been an honor and a privilege to be the varsity hockey coach at the University of Denver for the past 19 years. I’m extremely proud of the work that we have done to continue to build on the great Pioneer hockey tradition. Our consistency of success on the ice and in the classroom over the years has been a focal point of our work and I am very proud of what we have achieved. I will forever cherish the relationships that we have built in the Denver community with our fans, our staff and most importantly our former and current players. I want to wish you all the best.

Go Pioneers!

I doubt it. If memory serves me correctly his daughter is attending DU. The thing is his wife recently won election to the MN state senate. She also has her own radio program and business besides the NYT best seller she wrote on finance. Nice Stillwater area family. He would be a great choice.

Classy right up 'till the end. DU may find a coach who will do better in the post-season, but will be hard pressed to find one as classy.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Hey, that's my dad... :) ....just got off the phone with my mom and she was wondering how he would feel about DU not having Gwoz AND leaving the WCHA at the same time.

Your dad and I would talk before each season about Denver and BC's teams. He was a good man. I don't think he would be happy.

Gwoz's old college coach, Badger Bob Johnson, went directly from Wisconsin to the helm of the Calgary Flames. Of course that was 30 years ago, and Badger Bob had built quite a resume with the National/Olympic program as well as at UW.
