All Things Denver--XXXV

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

DU is in the GLI per several sources. There are no open weekends to visit Cornell. Maybe DU goes to Cornell in '14/15.

CBS is NCHC broadcaster. TV Schedule probably hasn't been finalized but I believe there will be at least 1 game a week.

Just confirmed DU is not in the GLI this coming season and it looks like they still have 2 open dates to fill. WMU is in GLI.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

From the Denver Post a few minutes ago:

"DU held a practice at the arena Thursday afternoon, and Gwozdecky announced that Finnish sophomore Juho Olkinuora will start in goal. Though the Wildcats beat DU 6-4 in a Nov. 24 game at Magness Arena this season, Olkinuora did not play. Sam Brittain, who allowed five goals after DU had a 3-0 lead, was the goalie."

With all due respect to Sam, this seems like the right decision to me. I hope it means that Jussi has had an excellent week of practice.

With acquisitions of Morrow and Iginla, the Pens sent Beau Bennett back to S/WB.

I just hope the coaching staff and Mr Olkinuora have worked on proper decisions while playing the puck. The demonstration of what a goalie should not do the last time DU played was epic.

Gwoz is taking the safe route. If DU is to be one and done (I hope not) then he doesn't need to answer questions as to why he didn't start his all-league goalie.

He does seem to have occasional brain cramps, doesn't he? But really, given what happened the last time these two met, the choice had to be Jussi. I'll say again, Sam has been the biggest disappointment this year. I have no explanation for it. Now would be a great time for him to be the goalie we all thought he was before he got hurt.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Well, it's almost game day folks. All year I have felt like this team would be one and done if they made it in. I've been through enough of these now, to know that it's a roller coaster. All I'm hoping for is that we so up mentally and play a solid game. You would think that would be a given but all you have to do is look at round ball to disprove that theory.

You gotta stop reading my mind. DU78's already reading my mail. And Vizeroo's reading my vitals.

BTW, there is a "past due" notice in the mail from the Crown Royal distributor :) :D  ;)

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Today's game matches teams which have been mediocre at best since facing each other earlier in the season. Since playing each other on November 24th--a 6-4 win for UNH--Denver has gone 11-10-5. UNH has gone a nearly identical 10-10-5. Hardly impressive reocrds by either squad over the past four months. I hope Denver doesn't allow a third period hat trick in under six and a half minutes to anyone today.

On top of that they also play a very similar style of hockey. It will come down to who shows up and executes their game plan.

Preseason first team All-WCHA to maybe getting 1/3 of the playing time...yeah, this wasn't the type of season anyone envisioned for Sam. It all fell apart in that third period against UNH, the GWG he gave up was unlike anything I had seen go past him. Who knows what the deal was, but he has looked a lot better his past few starts.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Jussi has had a couple of bad games this year. But aside from those bad games, he's generally known to be a cool customer, not prone to getting rattled. So I feel confident with him in the net.

What an exciting time of year. This is what it's all about. A little 4-game win streak and you're national champions...but one bad period, and you're probably done for the season. I like that Gwoz is looking back to 2004 in preparing the team for this weekend. He needed to try something a little different, and I hope it works. I predict DU goes to the Frozen Four. But if they don't, then I have my usual "at least I don't have to fork out a bunch of money for a FF trip" as my sour-grapes fallback position.

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

Really looking forward to tonight's game. A little revenge for the blown game in November would be nice. Need big games from the Shore and Ostrow lines. Have to dominate on face-offs especially in the d-zone. Let Jussi see everything and don't screen him. Don't let UNH make those long stretch passes like they did in November and CC did to DU a few weeks ago. Make UNH work to get through all 3 zones. Most of all, STAY OUT OF THE PENALTY BOX!!!!!! This DU team has shown that they can beat anyone and have also shown that they can lose focus and get away from their game plan. If they stick to the game plan, DU should be dancing in Pittsburgh. GO DU!!!!!!

Re: All Things Denver--XXXV

If this isn't the classic glass half full/half empty season, I don't know what would qualify. 20 wins and a tournament bid on the plus side. First round ouster from the league playoffs and in the national tournament on the minus side. With all of our b*tching and moaning, maybe we forget to thank our young men for their season long effort, both on the ice and in the classroom. Thanks, guys. For the returning players, next year is our year. For the guys leaving, good luck. And thanks for all your hard work and for representing DU with class.
