Thanks for the great post. I'm naturally delighted with a high pre-season ranking, although you can't put them on a credit ap. And I don't mean to be a cranky old geezer, but what does it take to put a stake through the heart of the g.d. jelly donut? How do we go about making sure everyone understands that's no longer our logo and here's the artwork for our new one? Jeez I hate that.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Say more things like that!!! Yes!!! That is exactly what I needed!! I like the way Steve can find something positive to say about everyone, even the third string goalie!! Very politic!!! Seriously, how can we lose??? Oh, wait, have I aid that before?

And a look at DU's USNTDP players for 2011-12

UNDER 18
Quentin Shore – Denver, Colo. — Draft Eligible in 2012
The third Shore brother to come into the NTDP, he should continue to live up to the family name. Brother Drew was a second-round pick of Florida in 2009, while other brother Nick was selected by the LA Kings in the third round in 2011.
It’s still unclear where Quentin Shore may fit into the 2012 draft, but he’s clearly got the talent to garner interest from a lot of NHL teams. You can usually expect good vision and playmaking ability from a Shore and Quentin’s no different. On top of that is the family’s trademark height.
His brothers didn’t really break out until their Under-18 seasons, so Quentin may follow suit. He has some really solid tools and could make an impact in a whole new way with this Under-18 Team. Both of his brothers are currently playing at the University of Denver,
Edit: And Quentin made his commitment to DU this August.

UNDER 17
Gage Ausmus – Grand Forks, Minn. — East Grand Forks High School
At 6-1, 185, Gage Ausmus has a good frame to work with. He only played 17 games last season with EGF, but made an impact with 12 points (4g-8a). Not only did he make an impact in the points department in a short time frame, he’s better known for his defensive abilities. The U.S. U17 blueline has average size this year, so it will be important for each defenseman to bring some amount of physicality and toughness against the strong competition in the USHL.
He’s already committed to the University of Denver, which has done a pretty good job with identifying top defensive prospects over the years.
Connor Chatham – Belleville, Ill. — St. Louis Blues Midget Minor
Chatham is one of the many big bodies the U17s went after to fill out the forward lineup. The size up front allows Team USA to get away with a smaller blue line. Chatham was an early commit, but was hurt most of this season.
He’s already committed to the University of Denver, and won’t be draft eligible until 2014. He’s going to bring some grit to the lineup. Pretty good Chatham scouting report from Lets Go DU. http://letsgodu.blogspot.com/search/label/Chatham

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Two conflicting rumor mills re Notre Dame's plans. The First one is from Ralph Routon in Colo. Spgs, the second is from a South Bend publication.

"Hockey rumor Notre Dame might wind up in Hockey East, with Western Michigan and St. Cloud State joining Colorado College and others in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference."

http://www.csindy.com/colorado/air-force-9-3-at-the-least/Content?oid=2369317

"The two most likely landing options for Notre Dame are the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference or remaining independent, with a move to Hockey East as a distant third."

They conflict, but for context, the latter is a mere 5 days old, while the former is 7 weeks old. That precedes the NMU move, and the AHA4 meeting, and the CCHA-WCHA Chicago summit, and the offer of WCHA membership to 5 more CCHA schools, and UAF/LSSU/Ferris accepting, and BGSU dragging their feet, and WMU announcing they are no longer just waiting for ND, and the TAMU shift in all-sports that could set off dominoes affecting B10 composition...

Let's not waste time on speculation from 7 weeks ago.

Re: All Things Denver XXXI

Add Will Butcher according to Heisenberg.

Thanks Ralph, snatched out of Madison, WI

He is supposedly one of the top 5 U.S. born 1995 d-men. He will be coming to DU in 2013.

Only 4 kids left on the U-17 team that haven't committed including both goalies.

The jellyhawk logo is definitely a source of, uh, disgust; No one can argue with that. The chickenhawk outfit is, well, thankfully possibly burned or at least trashed. The problem is, as I see it, that DU is not an arts-oriented school and, thus, has no clue when it comes to anything artsy. The rumor I heard was that DU paid upwards of $20K on this whole travesty...I can guarantee that with Denver's thriving art community that paying that much is completely unnecessary. Business-oriented people have absolutely no ability to make proper artsy decisions, such as artsy people are business-defiecient -- two different mindsets -- which is why DU overpaid for crap (because the busniness-oriented mindset states you get what you paid for [which is stupid in regards to anything artsy] and the artsy-oriented mindset states that getting your art out there, aka notoriety, is worth more than a current payday [hence the starving artist]).

Also, I'm the one who ranted on DG's blog recently about that travesty of a remake of the fight song...good gawd...it's one the same level, musically, as the smooshed jellyhawk. Just wrong. As I see it, why not do an audio to MIDI conversion of the original and do drum replacement to modernize it while retraining the original feel and swing, with a re-recording of the vocals in an appreciative way while adding appropriate backing instrumentation (aka NO electric, wannabe, guitar )

Works for me. As I've posted before, the "D-Rah" isn't exactly the "Notre Dame Victory March," but then, nothing else is. But it is ours and it is a decent fight song. It's great we've got a pep band back and it's great to hear it from time to time in Magness. On the "art" business I think you're right. You're too young to remember it, but back in the 70's NBC unveiled, with great fanfare, an expensive new logo that was going to take them into the future. Only one problem: it was the exact logo used by Nebraska public TV. Oops.

Whenever I see the photo of the DU locker room in Magness with the jelly donut prominently displaed, I want to puke. I understand replacing an otherwise perfectly good carpet would be expensive, but honestly, if we've got a logo, then why shouldn't it be displayed in the locker room? Surely there's some alum out there (or a group of them) who could help us out here. Media types, who don't know any better, will continue to use the donut because they don't know any better and they don't care. This may be a matter of following up on every occasion when the donut rears its ugly head and smartening up the people who did it. Twenty grand? Sheesh.

The smooshed-jellydonut-of-a-hawk (:D) is most definitely embedded in carpet in the bowels of Magness...see it every game night...I don't think DU even has an official logo at this point, we know it has no effect on the actual quality of the program, but wow...something has to be done...

Wasn't there an announcement that the arched "Denver" was the official logo? Viz has the right idea. Head to Walmart and get a frilly throwrug. Last season I also noticed (and b*tched about) a jelly donut in the shot during a between period interview with a player. How expensive would it be to cover that up?

What we need here is an athletic department task force. The task? Identify and try to eliminate every manifestation of the donut. In carpeting, in the computers that generate art work for TV stations, etc. Sort of like what they're gonna have to do with a couple of thousand Sioux references in REA.
