All Things Denver, XXX1X

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

(eerie music playing in background)
2010--RIT freshman,,Chris Tanev,,scored the opening goal in eventual 2-1 win RIT.

Fast forward to 2015
Providence senior,,Brandon Tanev,,scored empty net goal 3-1 in eventual 4-1 Providence win.

(more eerie music)

They are brothers:eek::eek:

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

It won't happen by game time tonight, but it would have been quite ironic and fitting. Joey LaLeggia is expected to sign with Edmonton at some point this week. The Colorado Avalanche play at home this evening against Edmonton, so I suppose it might have been possible for LaLeggia to play his first NHL game in Denver since the Oilers are out of the playoff picture and might have given LaLeggia a chance to play a handful of games at the NHL level before the end of the season.

I doubt they would want to burn a year of his ELC, but maybe?

Pretty good article about the game and Denver's style. I have to disagree with the premise, however, that LaLeggia's hit was a byproduct of Denver's "fast and loose" style of playing. Pushing the defensemen up is part of that style, as is finishing your checks by the glass. But open ice hits are not Denver's style at all. Although I didn't see every game this year, I could count on one hand the number of big open ice hits that I saw from DU this season. The ones that I did see (Moore's against UND and Larazza's against CC) also resulted in major penalties, and also hurt the team with suspensions.

Still thinking back to that shot off the post by Janssen. Man, an inch to the right, and Denver probably wins the game. So close, yet so far. That was one of the few quality shots all game that got through unobstructed towards the Providence net. If I remember correctly, DU had another infamous shot off the post in an NCAA regional where Chris Drury later won the game for BU during a 3-on-3.

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

I was working in Houston at the time and college hockey wasn't exactly a high priority for the local media. But I do recall DU losing two games at home to an eastern team with Ralph's nephew in goal. Beyond that, as far as details are concerned, I'm in the dark (as usual).

FWIW, Daren Puppa had a brother Derek who played goal for UAH in the 1990s http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=24686, but I doubt that Denver lost twice to them.

Joey has a quandrum. He can sign with the Oilers now or wait until the summer and become a free agent like Kevin Hayes of BC did last year. Hayes didn't sign with Chicago who drafted him, waited to become a free agent, fielded many offers and ultimately signed with the Rangers. Joey is in the same boat and I would think he will weigh all his options before making any decision.

On the other hand, the Oilers are under pressure to sign him or risk losing him. Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish weren't in Providence to enjoy watching some hockey games.

I really enjoyed the back-story of this regional, with Steve Miller there with Rico. Lots of connections to the DU Hockey program

Along the same lines Josiah Didier faces the same situation. Frankly, I do not envision Montreal signing Didier and I think the Canadiens will let him go. Didier strikes me as a career minor leaguer.

Also Larazza with the Arizona Coyotes. The remaining 4 seniors are free agents. I heard there is a lot of interest in Dan Doremus.

DU lost to PC on January 25th and 26th, 1985 5-4 and 4-2. I can't find a boxscore to see who was in goal for PC but my guess is it was Chris Terreri as he played 41 games for PC that year. He was born in Warwick, RI so I doubt he is related to Ralph.

Going back a little further, in the '66 semi-final game against Clarkson, Cliff Koroll untied it midway through the 3rd with a wicked back hander. Coach Lennie Ciglarski was so convinced his goalie had made the save he threw a stick on the ice. The Clarkson player in the box was so impressed with the "save" he came back on the ice. And the Clarkson goalie was so tickled with his "save" he flipped the puck out of the rink. Just one problem: even though the ref blew the whistle, the goal did not count. Nor was there any other kind of stoppage of play. He evidently blew the whistle for practice. I used to have audio of the play and you can clearly hear the whistle. Later, of course, Clarkson scored to win the game. Amo Bessone's MSU Spartans beat 'em in the championship game. Anyway, that was a NC that slipped out of our hands. No clear favorite, but the Pios had beaten all the others in the tournament during the regular season. The DU photographer had a clear shot of the goal over the Clarkson goalie's shoulder

To get to that FF DU had to come from behind, trailing the Sioux 4-1 after two in the Arena. Tied it with 3 in the 3rd and won it in overtime. Lyle Bradley with a hattie. Great scene after the GWG, Chancellor Alter rushed out on the ice and grabbed Murray in a big bear hug.

Well, as you know, I'm prone to these little spells. And in my memory I probably conflated Terreri and Puppa.

Wow, what a screw job that was. Makes no sense. Sounds like we could have had 8 titles now, instead of 7.

Re: All Things Denver, XXX1X

Per Monty thru Chambers, Moore and Heinen will be back next year. Chambers speculates that if DU lands Auston Matthews he will center them on the #1 line.

http://www.denverpost.com/colleges/ci_27815453/denvers-jim-montgomery-excited-2015-16-after-pioneers

BTW, Matthews is closing in on Patrick Kane's USNDT scoring record and is the unanimous choice to be the 1st pick in the 2016 NHL draft. DU and all other colleges are going to have to fight off the Everett Silvertips of the WHL. Matthews has made it known he will decide what he is going to do after the IIHF U-18s. The 2015 IIHF U18 World Championship will be the 17th IIHF World U18 Championship, and will be hosted by Zug and Lucerne, Switzerland. The tournament will begin on 16 April 2015, with the gold medal game to be played on 26 April 2015. Also Matthews is a current teammate with DU recruit Troy Terry.

Several articles in the Denver Post.
One stating* DU IS RECRUITING Austin Matthews--no surprise. DU and Michigan top college choices!
*Speculates may be better choice of words
