Re: All Things Denver XXX
Some incoherent Saturday morning rambling...
The Pioneers have plenty of talent to be an elite program on a consistent basis, as proven by the 10 straight 20+ win seasons and the hardware won over that span. But clearly, the late-season flameout is becoming a standard practice for DU over the last 5-6 years, and no amount of coaching or character seems to be enough to stop it from happening on the ice. You can almost set your watch by it. Sort of like watching a kid get straight As all year, and then screw it all up in final exams and end up with Cs. Our NC seasons were wonderful years ago, but every year since then has ended with a poor performance when it counts, always against teams that DU should beat, and now with a higher level of DU talent, the late season swan dives become more glaring. Someone once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. Clearly, the team is hitting the ole' late season wall once again, albeit a little earlier than usual. Since the coaches have seen this happen regularly for the last 5-6 years, here's hoping they've learned enough about their program by now to fix it. The solutions needed, in my view, are basic and obvious -- a higher effort level, more leadership and doing the little things right. Yet executing on these seems elusive for a program that seems to lose it's late season mojo every year. Perhaps we fans have too high of an expectation for DU, but given the high level of talent the program has, and the big contract that the coach wants, it's no surprise that fans do expect a team that competes well at the end of the season.
I don't expect NCs every year, but I do expect a team that plays hard, with heart and emotion. I love my school. I cheer my guts out at the games, buy the tickets every year, contribute $ and do all I can to help make the team successful. All I expect is that the team gives its best on the ice, in the classroom and off the ice. I can handle losing when the team plays hard. But when the team comes out "flat" at this time of year against a beatable opponent, you simply can't just ignore it. I'm sure Gwoz and the boys didn't sleep very well last night. They had a horrible effort level and they all know it, and the late season flameout movie is really starting to get old...
