Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

No surprise. Both Rakhshani and Donovan will be attending the Isles Prospect Camp which begins tomorrow.

Like last year, the Isles camp is closed to the public. There is supposedly a Saturday night scrimmage at the Nassau Coliseum that tickets will be sold to.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

Would expect Jason Zucker to be there. Hopefully you'll be able to report back on his great play in the scrimmage.

Keep us updated if the local media has any good reports.

Official Wild camp roster was released today. Jason Zucker will be attending, along with a couple other familiar names among college hockey fans.

The camp is July 13-19. There will be an official schedule released later in the week.

Former Pioneer great Matt Carle is getting married next week (July 16) in Minnesota to longtime girlfriend Clancey Kabella (DU '07). There is still time to buy the happy couple a wedding present...

Small world side story...an auditor that I work with is from Minnesota and a big Gopher fan so we shoot the breeze every now and then about college hockey. He sent me an email this week telling me that for the 4th of July he went out on a boat with one of his friends. They went to another dock to pick up some other friends (who the auditor didn't know) and it turned out to be Matt Carle and his fiance. Said Matt was a great guy and you would never have guessed that he was a Hobey Baker winner and professional hockey player.

Later in the email string he also said that they picked up David Carle for a bit. David mentioned that he's coaching some camps at Shattuck's over the summer.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

The whole Carle family should be in Minnesota this weekend. Maybe Gwoz will be there too and have a talk with the youngest brother, Alex.

"Sr. Goalie Blake Mendenhall was joined on the all-state first team by teammates Logan Miller, a senior forward, and Eric Wichorek, a senior defenseman. The other first-team picks were senior forward Ryan Luiten of East, junior forward Trent Wohlers of Wasilla and sophomore defenseman Alex Carle of South.
Though just a sophomore, Carle comes from bountiful bloodlines and owns poise beyond his years. His oldest brother, Matt, is a defenseman for NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and his other brother, David, was on a strong career track before a heart condition forced him to retire the summer before he was set to play at the University of Denver."

Is it too early to start a countdown?

Courtesy of Ralph Baer:
Today is 11 July 2010. There are 89 days until RPI's next game.
This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season

Guess I'll check the schedule.--DU begins the regular season at Burlington, Vermont, on 10/08/10.
Sooooooo..........

Today is 07/11/10.
There are 89 days until DU's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season

Disclaimer: I have not counted the days, nor do I know whether game day counts. I rely solely on the RPI educated and poster extraordinaire Baer as the arbiter of the number of days. :-}

I do not count the day of the game. That is to say, on October 8, here will be no more days left. :)

If you choose to leave the desert, Do Not, I Repeat, DO NOT bring your vuvuzela to Magness.

Vuvuzela=the most annoying and perhaps the least boring part of the final game.
I fell asleep, thank God.

Does recording the game, putting it on youtube, and clicking the vuvuzela add-on count? :D

Comment for a poster on HF Boards who went to the scrimmage.

Just got back from the scrimmage. Two players who really stood out to me were Donovan and Cizikas. Nino is an animal. Guys is everywhere. Hamonic was also very solid. Ness and Ullstrom are in another league skating wise.

Its crazy that Donovan is only going to be a sophomore next year. He was the most outstanding player to me in the scrimmage.

Re: All Things Denver, XXVIII

A few interesting DU statistical observations and implications.....DU was a competent (but not spectacular) offensive team last year at 3.3 GPG. This year, a lot of offense has left the team, with Ruegsegger, Rakhshani, Colborne and Wiercioch all off to the pros.

So where are the goals going to come from?

Anthony Maiani is DU's leading returning scorer this year and had 34 points last year, good for fourth on the team (behind the R&R boys and Big Joe). The amazing thing about Anthony is that as talented as is, he only shot 8% of his attempts into the net. Rock and Ruegs were 14-15% shooters and Colborne was 18%. Maiani can be a 40-45 point guy with all the PP time he's going to see, but finishing his chances is critical, and needs to double his accuracy this year.

Kyle Ostrow is a guy that DU also needs to be big gun this year. He had a respectable 26 points last year and he also needs to be a 35-40 point guy to lead the way for what will likely be an offensively challenged team this year. Kyle shot 14% last year which is very proficent for a WCHA forward. He's going to get more chances this year, so I see him stepping up a bit.

Jesse Martin was a highly accurate 24% shooter and 22 point man with all his injuries last year. It would be great to see him play healthy and crack the 30 point mark this year. If he shoots a little more often, he could be a more effective goal producer for the Pioneers, but he must stay healthy...

The KEY forward for DU next year is Drew Shore. Drew has a lot to prove this year, and needs to rebound defensively from a poor -7 he put up last year. Offensively, he took 95 shots but only put 5 in the net, for a very poor .053 shooting percentage. He has to learn to finish his chances at this level and pick up his play at both ends or it will be a rough year for him and for DU. Historically, players make the big developmental leap between freshman and sophomore years, and DU is hoping Drew can make the big jump.

Even if all four guys mentioned above get 10 more points this year than last year, that still only replaces the offense of one of the R and R boys. Then you have the other DU players- Donovan should be a 25-30 point man next year to replace Wiercioch, but you still need everyone else to step up to replace guys. Bennet and Zucker need to be 25 point men right off the bat, which is a lot of ask of first year players.

For DU to be have 3.3 goal offense this year with the schedule they play would be shocking. I think they'll probably be down around 2.8 - 3.0 GPG this year, which means the defense and goaltending is going to need to be great to compete at a high level. If it isn't, we Pio fans could be in for a very tough year.
