I got almost all the way through the second period of the 2005 championship game last night and here are my observations:

1- Throughout most of the second period UND seemed to carry the play.
2- We had a sick power play where we were really buzzing and just missed about 4 or 5 times :eek:
3- Mannino made a glove save that appeared to carry his glove (possibly) into the net (maybe). It was inconclusive and of course not ruled a goal, but man, they had a case.
4- Speaking of Mannino vs Cheverie, up until this point, I have to give the nod to Cheverie!! (sorry Manninosaves). The reason is rebounds!! OMG!!, Mannino was giving up huge, fat, rebounds, in bunches!!! One thing the announcers always point out is that Cheverie smothers that first shot better than anybody.
5- UND appeared snakebitten. They had so many great chances, but just couldn't bury them
6- Honestly, up until this point, we were being outplayed with the exception of that powerplay and some flashes of brilliance.
7- If I recall correctly, I believe we go on into the 3rd period and wear them down.
8- Colby Genoway was a stud, he must be playing in the NHL

He's playing over in Europe right now...

And I agree about your earlier statement, I remember UND being very snakebitten in that game. Lots of chances, just couldn't get anything to go.

Isn't this the game where Carle skated through entire defense and ended up with the shot bouncing off Stastny's butt and into the net?:D

Lindsay Cone (who finished 2nd yesterday) in the Giant Slalom is in her first season with DU after transferring from St. Lawrence University (where she won gold in giant slalom last year).

She transferred to DU so she could also compete on DU's top-caliber golf team.

I think so, it might be at the end of the period or in the third. I think what happened was that Carle skated through the defense in jaw dropping style and dished off a backhand to Gauthier who wasn't quite ready for the pass. I think his jaw was also dropped. If Gauthier had handled it it would have been a sure goal. The goaltender was covering the other side of the net, so was the camera. Amazing!!!

I just saw the "off the butt" goal was the second goal of the game. It was either Skinner or Ulansky that fired a slapper that deflected off of Stastny's butt. You can see him laughing about it on the bench!!

Nice: 1, 3, 13 finishes! CU did well, but not as well as DU, and Utah's horrible results may take them out of contention. Sweet!

Ha, maybe DU's waxers did some inspired work this morning.

I'm trying to think of who we need to fend off at this point. CU can make a charge, but we're presently about 120 points ahead of them. Utah will have to have an excellent men's race today to make up for their disastrous women's race this morning. Plus, we have 3 people (Cone, Haugen & Maepel) with excellent chances for podium finishes on Thursday and Friday. I think the key will be for the men's XC to have a decent race this afternoon (maybe all 3 finishing in the 10-20 range), and no major screw ups or DQ's in the alpine events tomorrow. We'll see, but it's a good start so far!

DU with two firsts, a second and a third in just three races. Four podium finishes.

The men start at 13th, 21st and 26th on the 10K Classic. I believe they start in seeded order. All we need is a good showing by them this afternoon to maintain the lead.

Slalom races are tomorrow with XC Women's 15k and Men's 20k freestyles on Saturday.

Looks like CU will cut lead down to about 70 points after the men's XC race which just concluded, but DU is still lookin' good. I think tomorrow will be the key day--if we can have similar success in the 2nd day of the alpine events as we did on the first day, it would probably provide enough of a cushion going into the final day of XC. But you never know what will happen tomorrow. It would be tough to hold back Haugen & Cone too much, but you wonder whether they'll be advised to ski more conservatively to avoid any major mishaps, for the good of the team.

And BTW: go DU hockey! My dad heard that the CC goalie broke a rib? That sucks. Hope he is OK soon. I do believe that was from the collision with his own player, but ardent CC fans will probably blame Colborne...

A strong showing in the slalom tomorrow like DU had in the GS yesterday would likely give DU enough cushion to win this thing again. It seems the weakest part of the team is the men's XC but they had a decent showing today to hold serve.

Watched the replay a half dozen times. Colborne was well past Howe and in the net when the collision occurred. The CC player pushed Colborne.

CC is DOA w/o Howe. Hope he gets better. Sounds Ouchy.

Add Mark Howe to the list. Although it wasn't grades that kept him from coming to DU. It was the millions of dollars he and his brother and dad got as a package deal to play in the WHA.

Considering all the great hockey connections that Marsh and Ralph had, we should have never really gone through all the difficulties that our program did for awhile (yes I understand that DU as a whole had issues during this timeframe)... A whole lot of "could haves" occurred between the late '70s on through the early '90s.

I remember when Gordie Howe showed up at DU (as a favor) for some festivities in '89 for the reunion and stuff. They had a skate around for the fans at the arena with the current players, some former players and Gordie Howe, which was real cool for me as a 14 year old (or anyone I guess), also got to meet Murray Armstrong (who hasn't come back often -- only twice I'm aware of).

Sheesh, the reminiscing today is just out of control... :)
